Dub explanations actually becoming universally accepted?
I've noticed from watching the Season sets recently that Funi actually takes advantage of a lot of situations where they can go in to depth more about things that aren't really explained in the story, but I always figured that the fans wouldn't particularly take them to the heart, especially people who hate the dub.
However, I've noticed that they're explanation for why Cell was Perfect without Android 18 has become the accepted explanation from fans. What they said was that Cell's nucleus "remembered" the structure of his perfect form, so if his body was regenerated, it would bring him back in that body. Again, I thought most fans wouldn't care for it, but low and behind, I was recently reading the Transformation guide on the main site, and that's the explanation Mike used.

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I suppose every so often, the dub's normally bad habit of "making things up out of the blue" could come in handy.

Yup couldn't have said it better myself . I've been trying not to rag on the dub so much but that sums it up well.SSj Kaboom wrote:I suppose every so often, the dub's normally bad habit of "making things up out of the blue" could come in handy.

I figured that Cell's forms had to do with the amount of power he had. He gained said power quickly be absorbing random people, #17, and then #18. So, when he threw up #18, he lost a lot of power and regressed in form. However, after exploding and then regenerating, he got a massive Zenkai and became "Super" Perfect.

... this explanation makes the most sense since he does have saiyan cells in his body and being blown to smithereens is probably going to give him quite the increase when he pulls himself back together. In fact, this is probably what the thinking behind it really was. He "made up" for the power he lost once regenerated.Kendamu wrote:I figured that Cell's forms had to do with the amount of power he had. Honestly, even if the dub hadn't used the 'remembering' thing, that's the explanation that would have first popped into my head. Maybe that's why it's so accepted? It just seems like an obvious theory.
I like Kendamu's theory too though. I always thought Cell's zenkai was kind of puny, since even though he came back stronger than his original perfect form, he still wasn't a match for SSJ2 Gohan really (yes, Vegeta distracted Cell to give Gohan the chance, but Gohan was still severely holding back until that oppertunity). And then we find out that SSJ2 is only double SSJ, which means his zenkai was really pathetic. But when we take into account he went from Semi-Perfect to more-than-Perfect the increase becomes way more significant, even if he was still below Gohan's true power.

Exactly. It just seems like a logical conclusion.B-kun wrote:It's the theory I came up with years before the dub got to that point.Bussani wrote:Honestly, even if the dub hadn't used the 'remembering' thing, that's the explanation that would have first popped into my head. It is surprising that FUNi would come up with something logical, rather than their usual convoluted nonsense.
INSTANT TRANSMISSION TURNS YOU INTO PARTICLES OF LIGHT SO YOU CAN-
And that gets you to the afterlife, how? Not to mention that light isn't anywhere near 'instant'ly fast.
My point was, how does turning into light let you travel to another plane of existence? It's not like the afterlife in Dragon Ball is somewhere you can just fly to, so how would you get there by turning into photons?mAcChaos wrote:The afterlife thing makes sense... it's an actual, physical place, in the DB universe.
I think these cases of the dub explaining the unexplained are cool, but I never accept them as canonical and always try to remember when it is a dub line that I'm thinking about so I don't go citing it as a source.
I think that dub explanations offer a great look at certain aspects of the show, and when they don't contradict canon info, offer a great plausible explanation.

I love how in Buu's Fury, the afterlife is described as being "lightyears above" the living world, then when Kid Buu learns to teleport, Goku says that he can now move "at the speed of light", but Buu still manages to reach the afterlife instantly. OK, maybe I've played through that game one too many times, but still...Bussani wrote:INSTANT TRANSMISSION TURNS YOU INTO PARTICLES OF LIGHT SO YOU CAN-

That's what I was saying. I did watch that part of the dub, but I muted it multiple times because I hated Cell's theme... which they played over and over and over...snaku wrote:Huh, I always thought Cell's power up was due to Zenkai after having blown himself up. It's much more bearable on the Season Sets with the Japanese music.Kendamu wrote:That's what I was saying. Back on topic, I am very much in agreement with FUNimations explanation of how "his cells got a taste of his perfect form, and were able to return him to that form." Although, that leaves the question of why he didn't stay in his "Perfect" form after he expelled 18...

Because his cells only rebuilt him in perfect form when they reconstructed him from scratch. That would have been my guess, anyway, but I prefer Kendamu's theory now.Metalwario64 wrote:Although, that leaves the question of why he didn't stay in his "Perfect" form after he expelled 18...
Haha.. People really tend to overestimate the speed of light. It takes over 8 minutes for light to reach Earth from the sun.Herms wrote:I love how in Buu's Fury, the afterlife is described as being "lightyears above" the living world, then when Kid Buu learns to teleport, Goku says that he can now move "at the speed of light", but Buu still manages to reach the afterlife instantly. I had one dub fan tell me that according to Piccolo, Raditz moved faster than light. Which he actually does say in the dub, but I don't think it was meant to be taken that literally. He then went on to say that because everyone gets stronger than Raditz, they are many times the speed of light.
And then...teleporting is the speed of light? So wait, it's slower then running?

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.
