I think they're both really catchy.

Feel free to flame me if my facts are wrong, as I haven't done more than just glance at screen shots.
It seems to me that DB Kai cropped the series essentially the same way Funimation did for their Remastered sets, so why isn't anyone throwing a shit fit over it now like they did with the Remastered sets? Call it "focusing on the focal point of the scene" or whatever other excuse you'd like to use, but it's still cropped like the Remastered sets.

Except it's NOT like the remastered sets. The remastered sets were stuck on one point and were zoomed in on in some sets.SSJ2bardock wrote:Call it "focusing on the focal point of the scene" or whatever other excuse you'd like to use, but it's still cropped like the Remastered sets.
Meanwhile, the cropping and expanding done in Kai isn't stuck to only showing what's in the dead center of the screen.
I do believe some of us can use your logic towards Evolution.JAPPO wrote:Overall what I expected... I still feel this was not necessary at all. There's nothing wrong with the anime (if you ignore the Buu saga and GT).

The opening and ending animations/music are some of the best things I've seen in a long long LONG time but I can't help think "Wow what if they just went and redid the whole thing with this kind of animation." As for the episode itself my thoughts mostly boil down to "Meh I've seen all of this before but the new music makes the experience weird and interesting I guess.'' I still love the opening and ending animations though. They remind me of why I like Dragon Ball in the first place. Only thing I would add to the opening is a 2 second shot of Goku going Super Saiyan. I mean why not they already gave away Freeza.
Yeah, they sort of did do the same thing, but the main reasons most of us are okay with it are A) each bit of cropping was manually done and thought about/looked at by a real person (as apposed to a machine) and B) Toei already released the series properly in its entirety, this is just a bonus on top of that.SSJ2bardock wrote:It seems to me that DB Kai cropped the series essentially the same way Funimation did for their Remastered sets, so why isn't anyone throwing a shit fit over it now like they did with the Remastered sets? NOTE: I finished documenting all of the BGM in the first episode and all four promos over in the Kai Music Thread.
Because FUNi completely discontinued their Uncropped DVDs entirely, meaning Cropped is now ALL you can buy in America.SSJ2bardock wrote:Feel free to flame me if my facts are wrong, as I haven't done more than just glance at screen shots.

Toei released the whole series in Uncropped DragonBox and never discontinued it, so if you want to ignore Kai and Buy Uncropped Dragonball, you can no problem.
And By "Never discontinued it" I mean you can still buy it in Single format, I know the Huge Boxed Sets themselves arent in print anymore

Here's the lyrics to Yeah! Break! Care! Break! also by Takayoshi Tanimoto. I'm not too sure if I romanized them correctly so I wrote them in Japanese too.
Yeah! Break! Care! Break! (yaburekabure) omoikkiri
Tobun da mugen no sora e
Jetto kiryū ni nokkari
Dokodemo iku yo sokkō
Mukō mizutte saikō
Let’s go tip-top! All right?
Me mo sameru yō na aoi chikyū
Kakega enai kono hoshi yuzurenai kara
Hajike toba ze Kamehama-Ha
Yaba meno kono jidai
Sekai o mamoru tame umareta kara
Yeah! Break! Care! Break! (yaburekabure) omoikkiri
Yarun da furu pawā
Kibō ga ore no buki dakara
Mirai shinjite
Yeah! Break! Care! Break! (ヤブレカブレ) 思いっきり
飛ぶんだ 無限の空へ
ジェット気流に乗っかり
どこでも行くよソッコー
向こうみずってサイコー
Let’s go tip-top! All right?
目も醒めるような 碧い地球
かけがえないこの星 譲れないから
弾け飛ばせ かめはめ波
ヤバめのこの時代
世界を守るため生まれたから
Yeah! Break! Care! Break! (ヤブレカブレ) 思いっきり
やるんだ フルパワー
希望が俺の武器だから
未来信じて

Oh there's no arguing there. I didn't agree with FUNi's logic of claiming cropped DBZ was "The way it was meant to be seen!" Their whole remastering methods and everything involved with cropping and what not was wrong.Velasa wrote:Reguardless, some of us just don't agree with cropping a show from it's original format.
Toei, actually put thought into how to crop it and what to show and what can be compromised. Not only that, but as mentioned before, they do have the series available in uncropped format.

OK quick run down of what I got from DB Kai in the first episode.
1 - The animation that was touched up is barely noticeable from what I've seen.
2 - The new BGM is so much better than the old BGM.
3 - The cutting of filler has made the show insanely more enjoyable for me to watch.
In most instances I couldn't really notice anything that made me think, "Wow this is great" as far as the animation goes. The most noticeable thing to me was the color of Goku's gi, other than that I would have been completely fine if they had done everything else and left the animation alone.
The new BGM, I'll start with the Opening and Ending songs. "Dragon Soul" is definitely a pretty cool song, not one of my favorites but it's still a decent song none the less. "Yeah! Break! Care!" felt very out of place and I didn't enjoy it at all, it seemed like something that you would hear in a Dance Dance Revolution game not Dragonball. Now on to the important stuff, the BGM. I've gotta say, this new BGM is leagues better than the old score! I have always thought Kikuchi's score made the series feel even more dated than it already was so this new BGM has made me EXTREMELY pleased. It's amazing that simply changing the BGM could breathe such a breath of fresh air into this series.
Finally, the filler cuts. This has got to be the deal breaker for me; cutting out the amount of superfluous and, quite frankly, boring filler that they did made me a very happy man. I was just sitting here thinking to myself, "Man, I could barely even sit through the first episode of Gohan running through the woods and now in Kai all of that nonsense stops within the first 5 minutes!". Getting rid of the filler like they did really makes Kai a success in my mind. As a person who likes to watch anime series' consecutively from beginning to end I had always told myself that trying to do that with Dragonball Z would be unbearable and not something I would enjoy, but I see the series as being a much more enjoyable thing to watch now that it's been cut down.
In conclusion, DB Kai has pleased me so far, but all it has really done is fueled my yearning for a completely reanimated version of the show in the style of the beginning animation.

Yes, they were completely updated. I especially noticed this during the scene when Raditz's spacepod comes crashing down to Earth.Forgotten Hero wrote:Looking back...Did the sound effects sound up dated? They sounded completely new to me.
Now if you'll excuse me, I am now going to go watch episode 001 for the third time today.

I haven't seen an episode yet. But the new ending, opening and eyecatches are very impressive. It makes me wish the show was just re-animated. I love the ending song but the OP song is just kind of ... meh... and sounds a LOT like Dan Dan, which I know a few people have already mentioned.
But wow yeah. I really wish they had just re-animated it, they could have really made re-watching the show a more interesting experience since they've almost re-done everything anyway.
