Episode #0171! VegettoEX, Meri, and Jeff settle in for a monster episode with the debut of the "DragonBall Kai Review of Awesomeness" (as episode one has just aired in Japan), and also Volume 26 in our regular "Manga Review of Awesomeness". How does "Kai" live up to its twenty-year-old original self, and how does Toriyama's continued Freeza arc fare over in the manga? April's releases, great e-mails, some donation item namings, and so much more round out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the silly *one-hundred-seventy-one* episodes, now.

As I wrote on the home page, apologies on my own mic sound during the non-Kai parts of the episode. Looks like my gain wasn't set as high as I thought it was, and I sound a little like I'm being recorded on someone else's mic. Still highly listenable. Just saying...

I'm so tired. Goodnight.

w0rd.

I'm total differing in my opinion about the voice actors and etc than everyone else.
What's up?! I loved Raditz, and you guys and the forums seem pretty indifferent. I didn't notice Bulma at all, but maybe after seeing it again I might agree with you guys some more.
I guess that's something I also felt about the episode; I need to see it again in order to further my opinion.

You guys noticed the weird cut with Bulma after she hit Roshi, too. I thought it might have just been me and I can't seem to remember how it went in the original. It was something that stood out in that first episode though.

YES! I noticed that too! I'll probably have to go back and watch dbz's version of that scene to see what was with that. It was the only really noticeable edit in the episode.

Interesting episode, especially since volume 26 has always been one of my favorites. I'll probably explain why later, but for now here's some Viz changes and things lost in translation.

In Viz, Freeza calls Piccolo by name, which he doesn't do in the original. Out of everyone he's fighting with, Vegeta is the only one Freeza calls by name, presumably since he's the only one of them Freeza actually knows. I guess Freeza could have overheard Gohan and the others talking about Piccolo and learned his name from that, but I think it's part of Freeza's character that he doesn't care enough about the people he meets/fights to bother to remember their name.

While Freeza had started speaking in a more informal tone after transforming into his second form, he regains his politness once he reaches his third form. In his final form he starts talking in a youthful, almost childish way.

When Goku is burying Vegeta, in the original he says of Vegeta that "I despised you, but you did have the pride of a Saiyan…". In Viz, the "I despised you" part is changed to "You were heartless…". Man, Goku gives bad eulogies.

When Kaio is saying that Saiyans are mysterious, originally he changes his mind, saying that Goku is the only one of them like that. In Viz he says that Saiyans are interesting, particular Goku.

When Freeza mentions his parent(s), the word he uses, oya, can potentially mean only one parent, so Cold could be the only parent he has.

I actually have nothing much to add to the Kai discussion, the EX crew covered most of it. Jeff's comment are much appreciated cause I really wondered if someone who didn't had 10+ years experience with this show, still could make out some things that were ''out of place''.
Voices? Nothing to be too critical about. Background music? Meh~, gonna wait and see where it's going. The opening and ending? *Wipes away the drool*.

The manga review was as awesome as ever so keep it up.

And Happy Birthday Jeff!

When it comes to the dub...

...a few of the actors (Schemmel, Bailey, and Hebert) no longer live in Texas so they'd either have to fly down or go to a local studio where they can record. Guys like Sabat and McFarland are still huge players down at FUNimation (as big named actors, producers, directors, and writers) so it's not likely there'd be any sort of trouble with getting them back.

Schemmel, Bailey, and Hebert all still do work at Funimation.

Ah, but did I imply such was otherwise with my phraseology? Not really.

If LP stands for Linkin Park I will hate you forever.
If LP stands for "Lets Play" you're my new best friend.

It stands for Linkin Park but I made this username years ago so it has no relevance to me anymore!

Y'know something I couldn't help but notice, that with the timing of this coming essentially RIGHT after the movie, the flashbacks to the Dragonball stuff specifically pertaining to events that the movie was based on (like Piccolo really being the only villain shown during it) it feels like this was perfectly set-up on time to showcase to any new fans that might've been intrigued by the movie to wanna see the ACTUAL source material. I don't think it's a bad thing either, just something I noticed when I watched it.

Still listening to the podcast now, doin' a great job as usual guys.

Nice initial reactions to Kai. My favorite moment, by far, is Meri's "why the hell would we buy R2's with no subtitles?" Enjoy the married life, Mike!
