Ironically, I think we did see Trunks learning to walk in filler.
I remember that episode it was before Bulma cuts Future Trunks hair. But could have been longer...
Also your right the series did run almost 508 episode, but seen gohan study more would have been good for the show. Think about it there no way, Gohan went cold-turkey and study 100% of the time. They should have add more parts of gohan trying escape, and running away form Chi-Chi. After the death of Goku in the Cell Games.
This takes me back early 97. I remember those days

I remember watch Dragonball on UPN or was in fox back in 1987. It air 4:00am in the morning.

No thanks. There's already too much "lets stand around and do nothing and bore the viewer" in the series.

If Gohan really wanted to run away he could have... Obviously he didn't slack off that much, given how successful he was in his academics.

Exactly. I can't be the only person who would get annoyed when you'd have something like: "Piccolo and Goku are getting their ass kicked by Raditz! Now lets cut to Chi Chi cooking some dinner wondering how Gohan is doing!" The only character I'd like to see in a day to day situation being normal is VEGETA. He's not from earth and he's a former bad guy. So it's always cool/funny seeing him interact with other people. Like Bulma's mother for example.

I wouldn't mind that quite as much if they didn't do it in the
middle of the fights. Stuff like that would've been fine if it was between the big arcs, or even during points when not much is going on with the main characters (like, for example, during the week or so where Krillin and Gohan were running to Guru's and Vegeta was sitting in one place).

Basically, the series was not about realism, it was about fun, and entertaining children.
Same reason you would never see a pregnant April O'Neil or Optimus Prime getting his prostate checked and stuff like that.
Yo! Cal's the name. Nice to meet you!

*Raises hand*
Day to day life for people, what they do in their downtime, their quieter hopes and dreams, they way they interact with each other when not under certain fear of death- this is why I write fanfiction. I miss things like that when they're gone, the things that really fill out the character's personalities and let you see what they're really like.
In the middle of the Freezer arc? No. But at the end of battles to let people ease back in? I'd be all over that shit. I love it in filler and I'd love it even more dearly in cannon.

I always did like that filler scene of baby Trunks learning to walk. I much prefer filler of that sort than stretching out battles until they become boring, so in that sense I do wish they were more things like pregnancy and whatnot in DB.
One pregnancy we do see though, is Piccolo Daimao giving birth to Ma Junior, if that counts. And Cell with the Cell Juniors too.

And the little Cell Jr's How can we forget them!
I guess filler of the pregnancy sort would have been better than the Great Saiyaman saga. I think it would have been pretty funny to see Bulma and Vegeta arguing in the delivery room, Or Bulma forcing him to shop for baby clothes. It might have even rivalled the famous 'Pink Badman shirt moment!'
I always like the part in Z which Goku forgets he is pushing baby Gohan and lets the pram roll down the slope. That was a nice father-son moment.

"Ok, use your instincts Kakarott. Right or Left? (Hmmm... I'd have to say... left.) Good. Then I'm going right!" (Vegeta to Goku as they try to find their way to free the others inside Buu - Episode: The Innards of Buu)

Simple answer.
Toriyama doesn't give a shit about drawing pregnancies and stuff like that. It's supposed to be a manga about martial arts and action and stuff like that. Why would he suddenly cut from the main storyline to show us Bulma giving birthto Trunks? Remember Dragon Ball was aimed at 10-year-old kids who read Shonen Jump manga. They don't want to see stuff like that. As for anime...they have enough filler as it is, and why would they add it? Personally, I don't want to see pregnancies and births because it's not the place for it.

It would just be nice though to see, like, a recap of things, and you see Bulma holding a baby trunks or whatever. Hell, even in Shojo series you don't see pregnancies, though.

I... kinda get the impression April isn't shown pregnant because she doesn't get pregnant (unless timetravel is involved)... and Optamus Prime... ur... do giant robots get prostate cancer? Major Metallic?
The answer is the timeskip on Bulma.
Goten... well, the easy answer is that Toriyama didn't know Goten would exist at the time.
*wonders how the Buu saga would have turned out if Toriyama had known it would happen.* XD

OK, I admit it would be good. But what Toriyama does is have time skips. Like 5 years after Dragon Ball, then Goku just turns up with Gohan. Toriyama couldn't show anything of Gohan's childhood before that or Chi-Chi pregnant simply because a year after Goku vs. Piccolo, Gohan was born. And there's no place really to fit in flashbacks in the manga, because it would have to be linked to something, and that something would be filler in the anime.
Actually, I do distinctly recall a flashback of Goku and Chi-Chi with baby Gohan in a pram or something, telling the story of how Gohan got his name. And the 3-year time skip as well - Bulma just turned up with Trunks, no-one knew but Vegeta and Yamcha (and the Briefs family, probably). And as for Goten and Marron...time skip again. Toriyama just likes to have big time skips and show you what happened in that time, someone's bound to have a kid when you look at it throughout the series. Even that 10-year time skip after the Boo Saga, we have Bra and Pan. Actually, the only time skips I can think of in DBZ when a character
doesn't have a new kid is in Trunks' timeline - 'cos everyone is more or less dead.
