Necessary Name Changes in Dub?

Despite what the Daizex transformations guide says, I am positive that he really is called "Kibito-shin" during the Japanese version of GT. In the manga of course he's only ever called "Kaioshin" post-fusion, which makes sense since as Bussani points out, Kaioshin is just a title. So if his real name was, say, Jim, then a fusion of Jim the Kaioshin and Kibito would be called Jimbito the Kaioshin, not Kibito-shin.

His name is Larry not Jim.

Mr. Satan's dub name should be Mark.

But seriously, I could see 'Kreerin' or 'Kryrin', or even 'Kririn" replacing 'Kuririn'... since, if you say it fast enough, it sounds phonetically like "Kreerin".

"Kibitokai" always bugged me. I always referred to him as "Kibitoshin". But perhaps it should be 'Kibishin'. But I guess that isn't the issue here.

But it does seem like FUNimation uses some unnecessary name-changes, and unnecessary spelling-changes... for instance, spelling it 'Frieza' instead of 'Freeza'.

I remember seeing that on some old packaging, back in the day probley around 1997. I remember thinking "Eh, alright I guess I can see what they are doing there". When I saw "Hur_cule" though, I was a bit upset.

But, thinking about it, I think I know why they did this. If they went with Mr. Savage, then we probley would never have any sign of the name Mr. Satan in this dub. Being Hur_cule is his made up first name this allowed the dub to still call him Mr. Satan being his first name was now Hur_cule. I think it would be less confusing this way when releasing there uncut versions of the movies\TV show. But still, yea I guess they could have come up with something a little better.

I demand they change the name to Mark!

Ah right.

Those are some of the good changes. Though, I don't see "Gokua" being totally necessary. But it is a clever pun.

One I don't get is "Chaozu". They change it to 'Chiaotzu', as if that's shorter and easier to pronounce.

I was under the impression it was to emphasize there was a "T" sound in the name.

But, I've recently been told there isn't supposed to BE a "T" sound, so I don't know what to think.

Oh, wow. So, the Japanese have four variations (“buruma”, “burumā”, “burūmā”, and—via EDICT—“burumāzu”) of the exact same word! …Why??

That being the case though, it almost seems to justify Viz’s decision to translate Chapter One’s title (“ブルマと孫悟空”) as “Bloomers and the Monkey King”—except the Japanese text clearly has furigana over the “孫悟空” portion reading “Son Gokuu”. I guess, technically, it could be “Bloomers and Son Gokuu”, but the context suggests “Bulma and Son Gokuu”. Coincidentally, a change to that translation from Viz’s just occurred on the Wikipedia article for Son Goku under the note “Removed nonsence.”

Well, with Gyuumao at least, I think it's translated out on the assumption that "Gyuumao" is just a title, and not his actual name. So you wouldn't call Toriyama "Bird Mountain" because that's a proper name and you generally don't translate those.

Ah… but how does one differentiate between titles and proper names here? In many cases they seem to be the same, e.g. Piccolo Daimaou. Is “Daimaou” considered part of his name, or should it be translated “Great Demon King” every time?

I think that was so the actors would actually pronounce it right, as opposed to the way an english speaker would say the word "Chaos".

Actually the English manga does translate his name as "Great Demon King Piccolo" all the time.

With spell changes, I don't see it as a big difference if it's still pronounced the same. For example, I don't consider Sailor Mars' name changed because it's pronounced the same, albeit with the English merchandise and eps anglicizing her name, but Mercury's is changed
