Necessary Name Changes in Dub?
Now while we all noticed that Funimation's dub didn't have too many big name changes, simple translations, or really minor ones, would any of you guys say you've noticed if there were necessary name changes to avoid arguments, or sounding strange or corny like Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and TF: Galaxy Force had?

Now that I think of it, yeah, that was definately a necessary change.SaiyamanMS wrote:"Bulla" instead of "Bra"? (Of course, "Bulla" is a valid romanisation, but still...)
With the Eighter thing, I saw that as one of the simple translations I mentioned.
Preferred Viz's "8-Man" I take it?Eighter is so stupid.

Well, Mr. Toriyama himself was always writing the romanised "Bulma" everywhere so... But if not for that, yes.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:By that logic, shouldn't we all be typing "Bloomer" or "Bloomers" rather than Bulma?SaiyamanMS wrote:"Bulla" instead of "Bra"? Well, Ox King may have been one of the more necessary name changes, since westerners might have more trouble pronouncing his name (I still can't spell it
).

Considering the connotations of "demon" in western society, it's fine that they dropped the "ma": from the name, in my book. He's simply not "evil" or "demonic" in the western sense, and I don't think a person should really have to have taken a course in eastern cultures to understand a childrens' comic book.jda95 wrote:But that is a proper translating.....Kingdom Heartless wrote:Well, Ox King may have been one of the more necessary name changes, since westerners might have more trouble pronouncing his name (I still can't spell it).

While I certainly see the reasons behind changing Mister Satan's name, I think "Hercule" is a rather random and dumb thing to change his name too. I think it would have been better for them to go with a name that at least sounded closer to the original name, like "Mister Savage".
Well, he is called the "emperor of demons" and did actually kill people, if only to protect his treasure. The whole idea is that he's a big, scary-looking guy with a scary name who turns out to not be all that bad, so removing the "demon" part of his name weakens that slightly. Though in Viz's case at least, I think they removed the "demon" part simply because "Ox King" is so much shorter than "Ox Demon King".Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:Considering the connotations of "demon" in western society, it's fine that they dropped the "ma": from the name, in my book. Then Randy Savage’s people would have sued them.Herms wrote:While I certainly see the reasons behind changing Mister Satan's name, I think "Hercule" is a rather random and dumb thing to change his name too. The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

Sorry about "Hur_cule" it's my way around the Satan filter."Mister Savage".
I remember seeing that on some old packaging, back in the day probley around 1997. I remember thinking "Eh, alright I guess I can see what they are doing there". When I saw "Hur_cule" though, I was a bit upset.
But, thinking about it, I think I know why they did this. If they went with Mr. Savage, then we probley would never have any sign of the name Mr. Satan in this dub. Being Hur_cule is his made up first name this allowed the dub to still call him Mr. Satan being his first name was now Hur_cule. I think it would be less confusing this way when releasing there uncut versions of the movies\TV show. But still, yea I guess they could have come up with something a little better.

Yeah. Know a few guys still said if they got to him in movies, they could picture Macho Man playing him though.Saiyan-Professor wrote:Then Randy Savage’s people would have sued them.Herms wrote:While I certainly see the reasons behind changing Mister Satan's name, I think "Hercule" is a rather random and dumb thing to change his name too. Forgot about her for a sec too. Then again, she's not even referred to by name in either language in Z, so...Oh yeah, completely forgot Bulla.
Not like anyone cares about her anyway, though.
I think Hachan is the only character that I'd support getting a completely different name. 8-Man and Eighter just don't make the grade. Maybe something like "Mr. 8"? Anyhoo, I liked Glenat's "Franky 8." That way they preserved the 8-pun, while taking a completely different naming route. At that, they even made another pun on him.Super Sonic wrote: With the Eighter thing, I saw that as one of the simple translations I mentioned.

I remember someone here saying they should have changed it to "Mr Saturn," which I always thought was a good idea, since it sounds basically the same as the Japanese pronounciation.
