Toriyama one-shot pictures: Tokimecha

Post by Herms » Sat May 23, 2009 1:08 am

----Notice:This old thread is part of my series of guides. To avoid necro-posting, please post any comments you have in the sticky thread for my guides, rather than here. Thanks!----

So I've recently been buying old issues of Jump, including ones that have some of the more recent Toriyama shorts, which haven't been reprinted in any of the Toriyama shorts collections. I figured I'd post up pictures of them. It's not really DragonBall-related, but hopefully Mike will let it slide, because hey, cool pictures.

Well, actually the picture quality isn't the best, since these were just taken with my camera (I still don't have a scanner). Me and Hujio plan to eventually scan these all in and make scanlations of them, but that won't be until after I come back to America. Thanks to Hujio for hosting these pictures.

First, here's the 3-part series Tokimecha. It came out in 1997, in the two double issues 3-4 and 5-6, and then issue 7.

Image
Here's the cover of the Jump with the first chapter of Tokimecha.

Image
The title page.

Image
Our heroine, Tai, who constructs the "tokimecha" time machine and travels back to ancient times. There, a dinosaur smashes her tokimecha, leaving her stuck in the past.

Image
She manages to knock out this dinosaur through sheer luck, which convinces a local cave boy, Muu, that she is the strongest woman around. Thus ends part 1.

(Get it? Tai+Muu=time)

------

Image
The title page for chapter 2.

Image
Muu (who inexplicably speaks modern Japanese, to Tai's confusion) wants to marry Tai, since he's only interested in strong women. So he breaks off his engagement with the cave girl Mee (pronounced "May"), who isn't too happy about this.

Image
Mee confronts Tai, and insists that they duel with stone hammers to prove who is stronger. During the course of the fight, Tai's overalls and backpack get torn up by Mee's hammer, so she spends the rest of the story going around in her underwear. Tai manages to defeat Mee by asking her numerous questions ("what's 54-6?" "how many issues of jump are there?" "what shape are rabbit turds?"), which causes her to collapse in confusion. She must be Chaozu's ancestor.

Image
Tai and co. then run across a rich man from the future, and his servent (this guy looks exactly like the villian from Kajika, and like the Kajika guy, he's gay and talks like a woman). Tai believes that they must have come from just a little bit further in the future than her, and that they're using the same tokimecha system that she invented (anyone sense a grandfather paradox coming up?).

Image
This guy goes around hunting dinosaurs, and they knock Mee out with a tranquilizer dart, planning to sell her to a collector in the future. Tai is angry at them for using her tokimecha system for such an evil purpose. She resolves to steal their tokimecha to return to the future.

Image
Tai and Muu pursue the bad guys on one of Muu's dinosaur friends. The bad guys launch a missile at them, but Muu knocks it back and rides it. Part 2 ends.

------

Image
The title page for part 3.

Image
Muu crashes the missile into the bad guys' plane, but they escape and take the tokimecha with them (tokimecha are hand-held devices that can be attached to any vehicle to turn it into a time machine). The rich guy's servant gets into the Magic Muscle Suit, a top millitary weapon that the rich guy managed to get his hands on.

Image
But Muu manages to defeat the Magic Muscle Suit with ease, and calls his dinosaur friends to surround the bad guys. Tai gets the bad guys' tokimecha, and uses it to return to the future. The bad guys are stuck in the past, where Mee (now awake again) says she'll make them work hard to make up for all the trouble they caused.

Now back in the present, Tai destroys the tokimecha, vowing never to build another one. That way evil people won't be able to abuse the technology. But Tai hasn't noticed that she didn't come back alone...

Muu looks like a cross between Yajorbe and Goku to me.

Toki can mean "time".

Muu looks nothing like Goku, so what the hell? But Tai seems to resemble Bulma quite a bit.

Yeah, toki="time" and the "mecha" (pronounced "meka") means machine (it's short for mechanical), so "tokimecha" is essentially another way of saying "time machine".

I know you can't rip yourself off, so I'll put it this way.
Toriyama seems to be paying heavy homage.. to himself.

Muu makes me think of Flint the time detective.

But I guess every character mentioned in this thread look a like one way or another.

I love how these are, like, direct homages to Dragonball! Just replacing Gohan with Tai and Muu, and in the second picture, Tai's in Goku's place on what was a purple Dragon. I can't find the original images, but surely someone knows the ones I mean.

This is great.

I loved that one because it reminds me of the DragonBall title pages, or whatever...the poses are the same :P

The way he and the girl are dressed, looks like a character straight out of Chrono Trigger. Ah hell, I've always said that everyone in that game looks like they're out of Dragon Ball anyway.

Is someone named something sounding like "shin?" If so, we get "Tai+Muu+Mee+Shin" (taimumashin = Time Machine).

At last, proof this isn't a DB parody/spin-off (people used to claim Tai was Bra from some point after the DB series  ). Which ones do you have now? Lady Red, Tokimecha, Awawa World Part 1... Are there others? EDIT: The special chapter of Dr Slump (for the Slumpbox) that came out in 2007, mayhaps?!

Ooh, good to see that Toriyama's still cranking out a couple manga one-shots even though he really doesn't need to (hehe, swimming in all his money).

While it's cool to see that there can be female leads in Toriyama stuff, he kinda undoes it by having her er-hem, "change" her style after her clothes are (in)conveniently torn :?.
