The "original" ending

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

@Rocketman: Maybe in the anime you can, but he's just screaming in the air in the manga. And do you seriously think that Toriyama intended to have Goku die one week but then he changed his mind in the next?

And that later he was getting really tired of doing the story and wanted to stop but kept going due to outside pressure.
He does mention in Daizenshuu 2 that he originally thought he'd end it after they first finished collecting the dragonballs, but do you know any source for him continuing the series on a dare?

So yeah, take the validity with a grain of salt. Unless Xyex has a more definitive source.
Unfortunately not. It was one of those things I was told of, found interesting but not fully convincing, and was then provided some source for which I promptly forgot upon being convinced it existed. :?

I *think* it was some random bit from an interview that wasn't even *his* interview. He was sitting in with someone else and made it as an off hand remark "I was going to end after the first Dragonball hunt but "so and so" (possibly the person he was sitting with, can't remember for sure) dared me to continue (I think it was because he said he found it a really amusing series, but again not sure) so I figured I'd do a tournament and it got really popular so I just sort of kept going" kind of comments. MAJORLY paraphrased since I only vaguely even remember it, and I'm not even sure I'm remembering the situation right, but yeah, that's what I remember. XD

<Kaboom> I'm just glad that he now sounds more like Invader Zim than Rita Repulsa
<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

I remember hearing somewhere stuff about how AT wanted to quit the series but was forced to continue. Like after Freeza, he needed new villians, so he made Gero and 19. But his boss was like 'is that the best you could do? some old guy and a fat guy?'so he created 17 and 18. And again 'two teenage kids?', so he made Cell. 'That weird looking-bug thing?' so he hurried up and created other forms of Cell, and so-forth. And we all know the Buu saga was supposed to leave Goku dead and have Gohan save the day.

Toriyama does tell that story behind the succession of villians in the android/Cell arc in Shenlong Times #2.
