Weirdest Spellings of Dragonball things?

Not exactly wrong, but it is weird he called them by their "products" and not their names

I think I lost a lung when I read this. Obviously the origins of the names and the food puns are well known. I mean, Chichi being Milk was a funny one that always gets me. Every time that is. I love that they know that Kuririn means chestnut. Pretty funny stuff, thanks for sharing it.

Once, I had to get my PS2 fixed because I had accidentally left the red light on before you hit reset to fully turn it on. Because of this, I couldn't open the disc tray. The red light wouldn't go away, despite trying to turn it off using the power switch on the back. I had also left my Budokai 3 disc in the disc tray. I had to get it fixed by the repairmen from Sony America.

When I got the PS2 back, along with the Budokai 3 disc, I got a receipt back that said I got those things back and thanked me for my service.

However, on the receipt, it didn't read Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3.

It read Dragon Ball 2 Dudokan 3.

There was this magazine that I read where they interview people and stuff, like their interests and role models. For one person, they said their hero was Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z, but the magazine printed it as "Sango Ku". They just messed up on the spelling.

I've often seen Budokai written as Budokan by the misinformed.

Can't believe we haven't had "Frieza" or "Gokou" brought up. Last I checked, saying "Gokou" as it's written would come out as "Go-ko" due to the OU.

Then again, on the Pokemon side, you have 4Kids confusing the shit out of kids by having them think Raikou is pronounced "Rai-coo."

I have some trading cards that spell Kuririn as "Klylin", which I guess isn't technically wrong, but it's definitely different from the usual spellings.

And what is up with that Gokou spelling, anyway? It's not like it was a one time error or something; I see it on Japanese merchandise all the time, probably with greater frequency than his name spelled correctly. Has anyone ever figured out why they would use an obviously wrong transliteration so much?

Nah, they've used that spelling on all kinds of things for a long time now, most recently in the instruction manuel for DB Kai: Saiya-jin Raishuu.

It was probably me. I've mentioned it many times before. "Gokou" is actually how my mom spells it too. And not because she saw it written that way, because she's hasn't.

Hirudegarn is probably the worst spelling in Dragonball history.

I don't know how you get "Hirudegarn" from Hildegarn. Oh sure, they kept the end, but his Funi name IMO sounds German. I dunno, it's just me.

Hiru is the Japanese romanization of 'Hil', I believe. SaiyaHermsio?

I wrote a little bit over here on the subject (though not much). Since we didn't know for the longest time what the name pun actually was, seems logical to me that "Hildegarn" was just as reasonable a writing as "Hirugedarn" was.

The name pun was explained in Daizenshuu 6, which came out only six months after the actual movie itself. So I'm kind of surprised nobody in the English-speaking DB community managed to find that information for so long.

For the longest time, I used the spelling of Go-kou as well. Back when I first got into Dragon Ball in 1994, me and my friends didn't have much of a reference for English spellings of the names. Our source was Bandai's Super Battle Collection toys and their English translation of the names. Bandai also popularized Klilyn (I even remember Clilyn).

Anyways, if you think about it, G-o-k-o-u would work if the kou in Go-kou was pronounced the same way as the lou in Louis and Louie, or the sou in souffle.

Back to the topic, I have a terrible, terrible bootleg of DB movie 1 where every single name is wrong. From what I remember, Goku is monkey, Yamcha is Adam, Muten Roshi is Master Wuta, and Kame Sennin is Tortoise Faerie.

Also, the Korean translations always sounded weird to me. Goku is Oh-Gong (kinda like the Chinese Wukong), Kuririn is Kuriring (they could've used an "n" sound but instead went with a "ng" sound), Gohan is Oh-Gong, Goten is Oh-chun, Majin Boo is Ma-in Boo, and Yamcha is Yamuchi. I'm sure there were others but I can't remember.

Could you provide Screencaps?

If it's a DVD, then all you need to do is use VLC, and to take screencaps of DVDs you just press Shift+S and they'll go to your My Pictures folder, and to include subtitles in the screencaps, go to Video>Deinterlace>X while playing the movie.

Sorry if you already knew that, but it's best to get it out of the way if you don't know.

Not sure if this counts or not, but I'm kinda surprised nobody's mentioned this:

I have a bootleg toy, still in it's blister pack. It's a twin-pack of SS Vegeta (with gold hair) and SS Gogeta (yellow hair). What's the title at the top? "Dragoonball."

Let's see, Gokou in Final Bout. Klilyn in several subtitles, as well as Freezer (which is technically correct).

And let's not forget the infamous Burdock (sorry Daimao).
