I always look forward to the Manga Review of Awesomeness and this should be an especially good one, considering that it is my favorite section of the manga. I can't wait to listen.

*Still listening*

Thanks so much guys :]

Also for the subject of the series possibly being set to end after the Freeza fight, my theory was that the whole deal with him being lost out there somewhere and still alive was the intended semi-cliffhanger ending at some point. I don't know if this was only in the dub's script at the tail end of the Freeza Saga, but I remember a comment from the Narrator about how every night Gohan, Chichi and Ox King would look up to the stars waiting for Goku to return. It was that scene that made me really think it was, at one time, intended to be an ending; it seemed very "final" while still leaving something open to your imagination.

Also dunno if this has been mentioned in the episode yet, since I've got plenty to go, but I remember some other interview where Toriyama mentioned that if he had known the series would've continued into the Buu arc, he would have just kept Trunks in the present timeline so he could continue being a main character. I know there's official word of that somewhere.

Despite my knowing Jeff did the Manga Review of Awesomeness episodes, this was my first time listening to one of the episodes. It's definitely fun to listen to.

My thoughts, randomly and bulleted:
  • -The series ending at Freeza, to me, might have worked...but knowing what came after, I honestly think it would have been a mistake.

-Jeff nailed Trunks' initial appearance for me. The episode of the anime (#120, "Freeza halved by a single stroke! Another Super Saiyajin") was actually the first full episode I ever saw. I was 15, working at Kinko's and had downloaded the episode via RealMedia from DaBlackGoku and watched it without any sound at the end of my shift. I thought it was the perfect end to Freeza and the most awesome way to introduce a new character.

-MechaMen it is. The whole "OMFG YOU ELITISTS" angle will never go away, just because people almost have a elitism of their own by opposing what they say is elitist (does that make any sense? I'm a little tired...). Personally, I just go with Jinzoningen. Probably because I remember watching the Trunks special raw and loved the performance of the line where Trunks runs off to face #17 and #18 after Gohan's death and shouts, "Just you wait and see what's coming, Jinzoningen!" as he transforms. It kinda gave me chills the first time I saw it.

    -Err, I'm sure there was more...If I remember, I'll post it :P
Good episode though. I enjoyed it quite a bit, now I'll have to go back and download the older manga review episodes.

Thanks for another quality episode! I'm looking forward to the Bardock discussion you mentioned, as well as the long anticipated return of templeotrunks.com. I keep trying to go, but this internet thingamabob won't let me. Hurry up, Mike!

When it comes to whether you call them jinzoningen or androids or whatever, it all just comes down to what people are used to hearing/saying. I don't think you can call that elitist. And anyway, anyone listening would know what you were referring to based on context no matter which term you used, so I don't see why it would even be an issue unless someone was listening with the intent of finding something wrong with your podcast.

That said, this was my first listen to one of your Manga Reviews, and I really enjoyed hearing everyone's thoughts. I'll have to go back and listen to some of the previous ones.

Reading through this volume again, something occurred to me.

Goku and Kuririn would come back to life where they died. The problem is that there is no planet Namek. So... then couldn't they just wish for there to BE a planet Namek again? It's simple, right? Restore the planet, and then resurrect Kuririn.

I guess the soul transfer to Earth thingy works, but I think my theory works too, if not better. Thoughts?
Usually goes by "Kevtrev" elsewhere online.

With the time lapse between the end of the Freeza fight and Trunks' arrival, there's 260 days between the fight and them wishing everyone back. Then the narrator says that "about a year" passes between then and Trunks' arrival. So that's about 1.67 of a year. Daizenshuu 7's timeline has the fight with Freeza on December 24th, 762, and Trunks' arrival in August, 764. Then the androids appear on May 12th, 767.

Shunkan-idou is effectively the Japanese word for teleportation. It's used for all sorts of different forms of teleportation in different works of science fiction.

Just to point out with Toriyama's editors, it was actually Toriyama's former editor at the time, Kazuhiko Torishima, who called Toriyama to voice his approval of the first set of androids. Toriyama had three editors over the course of the series, but only one at a time, though a lot of people think he had all three at once. Torishima was Toriyama's editor during all of Dr. Slump and the beginning of DragonBall up to the end of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai. After that was Yuu Kondou, who was editor from Raditz's appearance to the appearance of perfect-form Cell. Then Fuyuto Takeda was the editor from the Cell Games to the end of the series.

Not to be a jerk, but I'm always extremely skeptical of vaguely remembered statements supposedly from Toriyama. Do you remember where you heard that from?

It was actually right here from the forum, wasn't too long ago either. One of the more recent interviews with the guy, but I don't think it was the one in Shonen Jump where they psuedo-justify the "Djinn Buu" thing unless I'm incorrect on that too.

I don't blame you for being skeptical on that either one, but I know for a fact it was officially confirmed. If I could remember the thread it was originally posted on, nrgh...

It might be a pun on caracol, Spanish word for snail. That way it fits the Namek pun

Huh. That might be what they were going for, then. Perhaps they're assuming that more of their audience understands Spanish than Japanese...?

Still seems like a needless name change :P.

I'm so glad we got to this point of the manga, because there is something in the anime that bothers me since the first time i saw the anime back in 2001.

In the end of episode 106:
Vegeta freaks out after Namek explodes and Goku is presumed to be dead along with Frieza. (Now thinking that he is the most powerfull warrior in the universe) Then he starts to beat up Gohan and flies away.
End of the episode.

But in episode 107:
Vegeta is still there and nothing happend between him and Gohan. He even makes the suggestion to bring Krillin and Goku (presumed to be dead) back to life after moving their spirits to earth like in the manga chapter 329.

What where they thinking??? This makes a whole mess out of the continuity!!!
And the worst thing for me was back then, these two episodes where aired on the same day as a double feature in german tv!!!!
Was there a season break on the original japanese broadcasting between these two episodes or something else? (Maybe Herms or Hujio can answer that...please?!)

I think this is the worst mistake that appeared in the entire anime.

I'm with ya', anomaly! That's been one of the most-requested "Inconsistencies" that we do a video on. I'd still love to do it, but I think I need to be buttered-up pretty well before we attempt one of those, again :P.

Please make more videos! We like content. That scouter looks cool on you. Every second I spend listening to the podcast is amazing. Appule and obscure copies of movie 1 are awesome. Okay, I'm out of ideas. What else do I have to say to get this video?

Oh, please do! I'd love to see a well thought-out, visual explanation of this. I love your inconsistency videos. C'mon, don't be a pussy, all the other kids are doing it.

The whole elitist thing is kind of silly. The very idea of elitist terms seems elitist in itself. There is no standardized, international set of terms, so your options are to either use the japanese terms, your local dub or manga terms, or your own translation. To say that using any of these are elitist makes it sound as though the accusors feel that their version is, in fact, the superior version.

I really don't think that ending the story after the Freeza stuff would have made sense. In the scheme of how long the series was as that point, achieving Super Saiyan, an idea only a few volumes old, and then dieing would be completely unsatisfactory. Super Saiyan is cool and everything, but it was so new. Would that really fulfill the series' story? Sure Goku is officially the biggest badass at that point, but it sort of gives up on the spirit of the series. Perhaps if we had been getting hints of Super Saiyan from much earlier in the series, it would mean something more.

As far as I'm concerned, the only satisfactory stopping points in the story would have been either after the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, after Gohan defeats Cell, or where Toriyama actually ended it.

The odd thing is that Funimation also changed that specific name. I think they went with Moori or something similar to that. I don't think there is a pun there. Well moori is a fish, but that doesn't work so I don't know why. :?

Also, I can't wait for the Bardock special discussion. That is my favorite special/movie, bar-none.
