So I've got these Daizenshuus...
Aloha.
I was into DB years ago, and during that time I received Daizenshuus 1-5 as a Christmas Gift. Since then years have passed, my interest in DB has faded, and my need for money has done the other thing. The nostalgia and sentimentality factors have subsided enough that I can stand to get rid of them (if you knew me, you’d appreciate just how monumental this is: I still haven’t forgiven my parents for selling my first tiny little novelty bike at a garage sale; I, at the age of 22, still haven’t fully recovered from the loss of Optimus Prime; I cried at the final episode of Friends, even though I had never watched a single episode of it before in my life.) I don't even care for the Daizenshuus themselves that much, but selling them still means acknowledging the end of... something. I'm just bad at things ending.
So, introductions and pathologies aside, I have a few questions about these things. First and foremost, what are they worth? I believe Santa paid roughly $30 for each of them when he gave them to me about, uh… nine(?)… years ago? Something like that? I’ve idly checked for them on eBay a few times over the last few years, and it’s a little confusing. Sometimes it seems that one of them is worth a ton, sometimes that one in particular is flooding the place, only to disappear by the next time I check, and sometimes like they temporarily aren’t even out of print. …They are, right? Out of print? I heard something about a project to start translating and releasing them in English… is that happening at all?
Basically, I just want to magically turn them into money, and I’d like some advice on how best to do it. Better yet, one of you could buy them and save me any trouble at all! Though uh, then maybe we could pretend to do it through eBay anyway… I have a brand new account I need to start using and I guess this newfangled “feedback” thing is sort of a big deal.
So anyway, thanks in advance for any help/purchases, and I hope my unnecessarily longwinded post provided a couple minutes’ entertainment over someone’s morning coffee. I already took my Ambien, see, so the rambling is pretty much a chemical imperative. My friends call it “Ramblien.” Actually, they don’t. But I do. Did. Just now.
Hokai, so that's probably my sleeping pill telling me it's time to actually go to sleep. Night folks.

I can't really give you the answer you're looking for, but I have to say that it is sad to see that you have lost interest in Dragon Ball.

For real, this time...
Once more, without the drugs...
So, any thoughts? I have volumes 1-5. At least vols 2, 4 and 5 still have the little "DB News" pamphlets inserted, I'm not sure about the other two. All 5 still have the colored bands around them... advertisements and stuff I think, but, whatever they are, they're still there, though some of them are pretty beaten up for some reason, and one is torn. Apparently having all five stacked for so long has rubbed some of the ink off of the bands onto the actual paper covers, but I just checked and it rubs off easily. The covers have some slight smudging and general wear, but nothing serious, and everything inside the books is absolutely pristine, as they were never really opened much.
So, do the bands/inserts make a difference? Someone inquired about buying #4 in particular... eBay seems to suggest about $50 for that one. Does that sound right-ish? Anyone else want 1, 2, 3 or 5?
Also, @Metalwario64: I lost interest a long time ago, really. Though, I did recently rewatch through all of DBZ, and enjoyed it. I'm just not a big enough fan anymore that I wouldn't rather have a couple hundred bucks than some old collectibles on my shelf. I'm also about to start auctioning off all my old Magic:The Gathering cards on eBay

I really want #4...but I'm not about to pay $50 for it when I haven't paid over $20 for any of the ones I own.

If I had money, I would totally buy those Daizenshuus from you, Rodimus, since they are on the top of my most wanted list for my DB collection (I only have #4 right now)! But I, like you, am in dire need of cash, haha.
And just in my opinion, I would say $40 each is a fair price, but if you really want them to sell, obviously you should go lower. But it seems like since they're hard to get and out of print, you shouldn't have any problem if you use ebay, or maybe even craigslist.

If you sell it as a package deal, at a discount (considering the wear and tear you have mentioned), I might be interested.
The Daizenshuu are not all that rare if you look hard enough. You'd have to give me a good reason to purchase ripped/torn ones when I could just hold out longer and get one in pristine condition.

The only thing that's torn is the blue ad band that came with the book, not the actual book. The ones I've seen for sale don't come with those at all, so I don't think a torn one can detract from the value. Not if you're starting from the value of a band-less copy, anyway.
But yeah, granted, they aren't in pristine condition, though they certainly aren't far off. If I tried, I think there's a good chance the little smudges would come off easily. As far as I can tell they're only there at all because those band things weren't really meant to be left on this long. I'll poke at them a bit tomorrow and see how much "wear" is for real. And, the inside of every book is in absolutely perfect shape; I doubt there's a visible mark in the set (don't hold me to that, of course, just an informed guess).
I have no problem selling it as a set, though I need to check with a couple people who wanted some of them individually, and see what they were willing to pay.

The advertisement bands really have no effect on price, and the Shenlong Times news inserts should only have small effects on how much you charge. I think your best bet for selling these would be as one entire lot, but that's just me. Seeing as you seem to be planning on charge appropriate prices, I'm gonna have to say I'm not too interested in this one; call me delusional, but I'm still holding out on running across them for sale at the hands of someone who doesn't know their true worth (or an actual trip to Japan, where they can be gotten pretty cheap pretty easily).

I don't know about cheap. Right now Mandarake is selling a complete set of Daizenshuu 1-10 for about 30,000 yen (about $300). As for easily, they're definitely not something you'd find in a regular used book store like Bookoff, and there aren't too many Mandarake stores throughout the country.SSj_Rambo wrote:(or an actual trip to Japan, where they can be gotten pretty cheap pretty easily).
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?
Sometimes, I tweet things
We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Those ones do seem to be pretty cheap. I got Daizenshuu 8 for somewhere between 900-1500 yen (I bought it with a bunch of other stuff, so I don't quite remember the exact amount).

Yeah, I was thinking more of the online routes. I've seen some of them go for pretty cheap on Yahoo Auctions Japan, especially in large lots mixed with books from other series.Herms wrote:I don't know about cheap. Shut up! Trick him and get them for cheap!
*a-hem* They're only worth about 5 bucks each, but I'll take them all off your hands for $50 total
Nah, I'm not that big of an asshole. I have no clue of their worth...
