I couldn't give a damn about the hues the armour and other objects got but the beautiful blue sky turning cyan is the major problem I have with the Dbox. Although the sky may have been compromised, the skin tone turned out great in my opinion.kei17 wrote:My brother and some Japanese fans, too.jjgp1112 wrote:Kei17 hates the Dragon Box colors.
I think the colours must be like these.
It's not just a copy of JapDBox. They'll re-encode the footage. And, it's a really damn thing that they should have changed.kendamu wrote:Did'ja think that somehow the R1 DBox, which is just a copy of the R2 DBox, was going to somehow be drastically different?
"We didn't change a damn thing," is what the guy said at Otakon.
Now they accepted the wrong-coloured footage from Toei. I'll be forced to see a bunch of shit coloured DB videos and shots everywhere.
What a damn fault.

You know, I think it would be a cool idea to take the Dragon Box footage, once FUNimation releases their first DVD, into VirtualDubMod, and use that to try and correct the colors to appear closer to the animation cels like Kei's image...
Although I don't think I could sit there and do that to all 291 episodes!@_@

Oooooooooh! Haha, I see. Thanks for clearing that up.kei17 wrote:Actually, the whole DB series had each next episode preview before ending credits, but they changed it on DVD. Though, I have to say, NEPs that are played late are better than no NEPs at all.
That's a good comparison! Well, as you can see in these cels, they obviously did not painted his armor in lavendar, but white.Metalwario64 wrote:I know, the colors definitely show age.
For example, I took Vegeta's armor into openCanvas, and used the color dropper on his armor.
The lavender is R:239 G:195 B:239. This is the Dragon Box color. Now, I don't know a darned thing about animating via cels, but did they really paint white areas with a lavender paint?
Next is the grey. I simply greyscaled the lavender and that is how it came out. That is likely more how it was intended with the original film.
The white is your standard, vanilla white. Nothing to see here folks!;)

There's no need to do that to all episodes. The footage in Buu arc isn't bad unlike before that. You know, I think it would be a cool idea to take the Dragon Box footage, once FUNimation releases their first DVD, into VirtualDubMod, and use that to try and correct the colors to appear closer to the animation cels like Kei's image...

It still keeps good colours.
It's not paranoid at all.Char Aznable wrote: I'm really going to have to agree here. I'm not trying to start a debate because in all honesty, there are one or two songs from Faulconer (that's not a whole lot, but it's something) that I actually do like. The problem to me is the video quality. Sticking three audio tracks onto the discs may compromise it more than it can take before taking a hit - even a slight one - in quality.
Maybe that's just me being paranoid, though.
It bothers me quite a bit that there will never be a faithfully translated Dragon Ball dub. FUNimation had every chance when they took over the series to dub it the right way, and anime was being dubbed the right way in 1999, you just had to go to California to find it. But no, when they took over they decided to emulate the previous dub, which everyone knows is a censored and rewritten piece of crap. So by extension, the whole show is a censored and rewritten piece of crap, they just stopped censoring and editing the video in 1999.
Everyone deserves a second chance, and this is FUNimation's second chance. It's time they treated Dragon Ball like just another one of their anime properties and release it with the original music and only the original music. I understand the Falconer score is near and dear to a lot of people, but those people have their DVD singles and Orange Bricks. Not to sound like an asshole, but maybe it's time John Doe Dub Fan gets a Dragon Ball release he has problems with. God knows it took FUNimation 10 years of shitting on Dragon Ball with their DVD releases to finally get it right once.
Some more trailer screencaps:

I actually like the colors of the Dragon Box. I prefer things with a pinkish hue and like the sky to look more cyan than blue.

Interesting development regarding the music issue. I asked FUNi on their twitter:
"On your new Dragon Box sets, is the English dub going to contain the Japanese music, or Bruce Faulconer's music?
They said:
"Dunno yet"
Then another guy asked the same thing. FUNi replied:
"I wanna say Original score only but let me doublecheck"

A recent update on FUNimation's Twitter page suggests that the Dragon Boxes will indeed feature one dub track only:
The Original Japanese score.
EDIT: Dammit, Big Boss beat me to it by mere seconds. BUT MINE HAS A LINK, WHAHAHA!!

Yes I think so too. To us, however, it's strange. Many DB fans in Japan noticed the miss, but there is still no mention from Toei.Hao_Kaiser wrote:Oooooooooh! Haha, I see. Thanks for clearing that up.I had never actually heard anyone bring that up. That's kind of interesting.

Who wants to see the great DB in damaged colours? If there was the another DBox that features the original colours, everyone would buy it, I guess.JulieYBM wrote:The DBox footage has aged. If it's damaged and the the footage as is now the natural condition, isn't that just as good as the 'original colors'.

I'm sorry, but I just cannot take the show seriously with Faulconer's music. I used to love them equally, but nowadays I just can't watch it with the American BGM.

It's not that I have a problem with the Japanese BGM or anything (and don't really mind which bgm is with the English dub), but I want to bring up a point.obiwan23s wrote:I understand the Falconer score is near and dear to a lot of people, but those people have their DVD singles and Orange Bricks. What about the educated dub fans that HAVE NOT bought a single Dragonball DVD because they were waiting for this release? People who didn't buy into the whole season set crapola and who couldn't afford $20 per 3-4 episodes a DVD. People who don't like widescreen, and people with low budgets but who are still dubbies have been left out just as much as anyone else. Take a step back and look at it from a perspective other than your own. Not every dub fan is an idiot who buys into the orange bricks, so honestly the point of "It's there if they want it/just go buy the bricks/it's already entirely out in one format or another" are just selfish points, and I'm kinda getting tired of seeing them everywhere.
It's not like dub fans don't want Dragonbox footage too. It may be correct that Joe Shmoe DBZ fan will buy the orange bricks and pay no mind to the widescreen and shitty mastering. But the fans who do, but have no desire for the Japanese music are still being pretty much left out, at least for those first two Seasons/Sagas. But even still, the majority of early Funimation DVD's are poorly encoded, and I'm sure people would enjoy having the awesome clarity of the Dragon Boxes.
I make this point because I know people like this. People who don't give two shits about anime, and some even hate it with a passion, but they view Dragonball Z as a separate entity from anime. And they're intelligent dubbies, who know that the season sets are garbage, and that there are Dragon Boxes out there. They also prefer the Faulconer score, opposed to the Japanese score.
Trust me, I know Funimation can't please everyone, but the fact remains that there are loads of people that will be looking forward to this release only to be disappointed (probably again) by the fact that the broadcast bgm is no where to be found (if that's the case). Some people will never be pleased, but I'm just saying that some people are trashing the dub maybe a little too hard.
If it were up to me, I'd have like 7 options for audio (I know that's an unrealistic hope, but it'd be nice). I'd have Japanese, Spanish, English broadcast 5.1, English broadcast stereo, English w/ Japanese bgm 5.1, and English w/ Japanese stereo.
In a ditch somewhere
Most of the Buu saga music is boring and never fits the situation. Can't say the same thing for the Faulconer music or the Japanese score during the first half of the series.Metalwario64 wrote:Man I sure hope so!Li'l Lemmy wrote:A recent update on FUNimation's Twitter page suggests that the Dragon Boxes will indeed feature one dub track only:
