How do you mean? I thought the whole potential thing that was brought up since the beginning of Z was a good build up to Gohan's explosion against cell. He was now this SSj2(which you know kind of mirrors Goku's SSj transformation with Freeza). True that, Goku, is quiet possibly the worst father in the world. I believe the only time he spends with his son(Gohan I mean...don't even start with goten). Was 8 years total. Gohans first four Years, 3 years training for the androids and one year in the Hyperbolic Time chamber. If Goku taught Gohan how to control his emotions instead of using them as a tool, Goku could have still found a way to get Gohan to harness his power and not let it get the best of him, thus allowing him to really kick the crap out of cell without toying with him.Amigo Ten wrote:Why? I mean, yes, Goku was pretty bloody stupid to not explain everything to Gohan prior to the start of the Cell games, but Gohan's actions after that were his own. Once he transformed his personality changed anyway, so I can't see it making a difference from that point.
This is all irrelevant though because Gohan did learn to believe in himself at the end of the day, and still put the finishing blow on cell.
For that he'd have to somehow get Gohan to unleash his rage in the first place, which was no easy feat by that time. At the end of the cell saga he was the strongest person there, he just needed the confidence boost and once Goku gave it to him he was the hero, of course he was going to have second thoughts but that was because he was a child. However you are left with the idea that he will learn from this and grow...which he didnt in the buu saga. He became weak Unfit for being the hero, sure he had a bit more confidence, but what good is it if you cant hold your own. Why does Goku have to be the hero again? Why did they shatter the very thing they were trying to build and that was Gohans power. And nothing about the Cell games gave me the impression that Gohan could handle something like that on his own, which is why I think leaving him alone as the protector of Earth doesn't work at that point.
During the Buu saga it would have worked, because in his fight with Buu he is alone and he stands his ground even when outclassed.

In the Freeza Saga and earlier, the one-ups-manship happens because the bad guy is just as talented/powerful/crafty as the good guys.
In the Cell and Buu sagas, the back and forth happens because Vegeta acts completely retarded (and the villains can regenerate a stupid amount of times).
