Play-Asia article wrote:Famitsu’s reviewers rank NDS DQIX (10/10/10/10), NDS Moyashimon DS (6/5/6/5), PSP Project Witch (5/6/5/6), Wii Dragon Ball Tenkaichi Daibouken (6/6/5/6), PS3 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand (8/8/8/7), PS3 Toro to Morimori (6/7/7/6), and PS3 Katamari Damacy Tribute (9/8/8/8 ).
Ouch, not good. Famitsu is pretty tough on game reviews though. Only 10 games have ever got a perfect 40, and 17 games got a 39. We'll see how American and European video game reviewers rate it.
Didn't Weekly famitsu give the Sparking games quite good scores, though? I don't remember anymore, but if my memory serves me right...

Debatable, these days. They've been handing out those perfect-40 scores more liberally. Some of the more recent ones include
FFXII,
Brawl,
MGS4, and even
Nintendogs. Most recently, they gave it to
DQ9.
Of course, then there's the whole argument about just how flawed issuing a numerical score to quantify/qualify "good" in a product really is...

From my own past updates, I see:
Sparking! NEO: 8, 8, 7, 6 (29/40)
Shin Budokai 2: 6, 5, 7, 7 (25/40)
Harukanaru Goku Densetsu: 6, 6, 7, 8 (27/40)

How the hell does Goku have a final confrontation with the mad king if the game starts right after his defeat?
They're probably referring to Piccolo Jr.. I have no idea what this Snow Mountain is.
No, I think the article is right. I played parts of the (mostly unlocked) game at E3 and while there were a lot of red ribbon army references, the order of worlds you went in didn't quite match up to Dragonball canon. The game is most likely called "Revenge of
King Piccolo" for a reason. It could start with his defeat, then you proceed through the game defeating the Red Ribbon Army and then have it end in a final battle with King Piccolo again (and then maybe a final Piccolo Jr. esque form after that). From my playing of the game at both E3 and Comic-con, it had many references to the show, but I was always scratching my head in regards to what order it was trying to tell the story.
As for the Famistu scores....well, I wrote a small review earlier in this thread and I can see how it would get trashed. This game is far from Mario Galaxy. But the fanboys like me will find things to like about it regardless-such as awesome new theme songs!

But "Revenge of Kind Piccolo" isn't the game's original name. How much stock can we put in it?

The game has not done well at all. 13, 000 copies first week in Japan (about 22% of its initial shipment). Placed 11 if you go by Famitsu numbers, it placed 13 if you go by Mediacreate. It couldn't even beat a Monster Hunter re-release for PSP which has been out for a year and a half. I also don't expect this game to have legs.
I don't buy that "Well Monster Hunter Tri, and DQIX!" excuse, since other games are still doing better then it.
FWIW about Famitsu - I remember them panning Advanced Adventure back in the day. And Western reviewers loved that game.
Innagadadavida wrote:They probably mixed the description of the DS game with the Wii game. It's funny, but maddening. I hate it when journalists have no idea what they're reporting on. I used to work on my high-schools paper and it's a pretty basic rule to familiarize yourself with the content before writing an article.
Video Game journalists tend to not be good. All the good ones leave to persue "really" reporting jobs because the industry is still considered a joke.

I doubt it.
The first 3 levels are red ribbon army themed (not sure about the fourth one) and the last two levels take place in the King Piccolo saga.

Revenge isn't very kind.

Anyways, I don't think they'd name it something that doesn't make sense. It probably has to do with the story.

... Apart from the fact that the seal on Piccolo is broke and he starts a campaign to kill all martial artists because one of them sealed him years ago? I think that qualifies as revenge, I might be wrong.

Not that I don't mind seeing new animation but why does the Dragonball game get new scans if the game is already out? AND Kai get all new scans; yet we've still gotten nothing new on RB?

The issue had RB scans, but they were only 2, and we saw them already
Back to Dragon Ball.
Oh yeah, Arale is playable in the game

I'm excited about playing as Drum & Tamborine, so I can see their 'supers', as well as Akkuman and Mummyman and ninja whats-his-name.
Pretty much all the villians

Dropped to #30 this week. In one week Gears Of War 2 in Japan, a market who doesn't buy shooters, on a console that has a small fraction of the install base the Wii has in Japan, has outsold Tenkaichi Daiboken's two week total. It's a certified bomba.

Unfortunately, I don't see the game doing much better elsewhere. Games based on the first anime series tend not to sell very well in the states. I'm glad it's being released here, but I'll bet NB will think twice before bringing another game based on Dragon Ball over here after this.

Japan is hating this game. Dropped to #47. It's probably doing a couple hundred at best now. Unless a miracle happens, it'll drop off the ranking charts completely next week. I'll post an update at the beginning of next year when Famitsu or Media Create releases the 2009 top 500.

Honestly I just don't think Japan is ready for Dragonball. I heard that evolution and the dvds that funimation make just don't sell well there. Maybe one day Japan will understand the concepts and themes of dragonball but I don't see it happening in my lifetime. Maybe if we Let Japan dub the series or create a Japanese series based on it but it's unlikely.
