I think those are from the Dragon Boxes.
Oh DBOX contains these previews? I didn't know that. But just listen. These previews sound much better than the ones on the episodes. The reason is clear. They used the first video tape masters Fuji TV used on the original run because the films are missing. Also the colours look just like so. This is not 20 old VHS rip but from DBOX itself. Now it's confirmed. The audio was better on the original broadcast.
Wait, so then... they still have the tape masters? So why didn't they just use them on the episodes..? Now I am confused.

By the way, I finally received the reply from Toei. BUT THEY DID NOT MENTION IT. They described "colour issue" again. WTF? I did not ask them about colours but the sound quality.

Wierd... So Toei didn't throw the tapes away; they just gave them to Fuji TV for broadcasting? Kei17, what channel airs the reruns? It's not Fuji TV, is it?

Fuji TV re-aired Z around 2000 and it had poor audio. Today Animax, Tokyo MX and BS Fuji are re-airing DBZ and none of them has good audio.

Then you turn up the volume of DBOX audio. It will not sound good like the clip from the VHS. Because the very difference is not volume but dynamic range.
Do you actually know audio fundamentals? I'm not here to choose sides or anything but when people say things that make no sense... I just have to say something back. Amplitude (i.e. ''volume'') definitely depends on dynamic range. Look:

I know dynamic range is intimately-involved in volume. But I wanted to say by that is wide dynamic range of the audio on original run is not because of only its volume. DBOX audio primarily lacks high-tone range and original run has it. This cannot be explained only by the difference of volume but by the media of audio they used.

Dude, how are we to know this isn't the source of all issues then? Especially the synch issue. Here we only have two sources. We don't have any real information on which is timed correctly and which isn't. All we know are the two sources are different.

I'll go back and look at everything again tonight and try to post a few items for everyone to listen to (if I have time)

Would you mind posting the reply they gave to you?

What did they say in regards to this "colour issue"?

I think those are from the Dragon Boxes.
Those are not from the Dragon Boxes! I just love how everything gokuden553 puts up is supposedly from his "Dragon Box sets". I guess that automatically makes his videos not stolen from someone else on YouTube and credible, except for the fact that most of those rare videos are not from the Dragon Boxes at all. The Dragon Box footage doesn't like it was ripped off an old VHS tape.

Anyway, the previews for these episodes (DBZ 128, 220, & 256) are different on the Dragon Box. They're actually the previews from the re-airing of the series. The videos posted above are from the initial airing of those episodes. I always wished these had been included on the Dragon Boxes...

Does the DBox really have that much grain on it? I would be awfully disappointed if it had. You sure it's not downgraded?

Times like this I bite my nails off because I don't have DBox/R2.

Although it's disappointing to hear that they're not included, at least it saved me time digging through my DragonBoxes looking for the previews, which I was gearing to do until I read your post.

I am sure it's completely raw. And on animes remastered in Japan, grain tends to remain because Japanese fanboys think grain is also an original material of the work.

Well, what are you playing the files with? Some software makes those .vob files look worse than they are...

Yes, there is grain. Here is a PNG for you captured properly to compare (from kei17's VOB... click to enlarge).

And one from a VOB I had on my harddrive of the best scene ever!

Nothing much to be done about it. Its there on the film, whether you like it or not.

Yeah, VLC doesn't seem to, but PowerDVD sure does, and I know some people here use it. Here's two screenshots taken from kei17's .vob file, with PowerDVD, VirtualDubMod and VLC Media Player, in that order:

Welcome to the exciting world of 16mm film. If you ever watch a show filmed on 16mm, you'll see grain. Sad but true, unless you want to soften the whole image by doing DVNR.

Ignore the missing lines, and notice how the patches of color on the right are smooth and completely only one color. There is no grain. The patches of color on the left half almost seem speckled, and have a lot of texture. It is a Dragon Box shot with full grain.
