I will agree they took the spark from the other charecters. Gohan had all this potensial, and every saga of DBZ gohan alwayes managed to be powerful at one point, whether it be becuase of a Transformation, a quick burst of anger, of Mystic Gohan. But he was thrown aside in GT. Goten and Trunks, the fact that they were really powerful at a young age, and they were supposed to be really powerful was cast aside. Uub, who was supposed to succedd goku was cast aside. Aparently in the English Version, Bruce Falcaner was cast aside and we got rap music for DBGT music. in DBZ, their are different people that make an impact, even though Goku would save the day in the End.

Yep, that's pretty much what I meant from the start. Like I said, filler episodes in DB and DBZ feel the same way to me. The elements are all there, but something just feels off. The writing styles, the way the characters act, etc. In GT, to me, it almost feels like a different universe entirely. I don't know why. I suppose it's just little things.

I always thought they could have continued with a saga about the makai. People keep saying the story had run its course, but we had just been introduced to the idea of kaioshin. Perhaps there could be a story about 2 makai who are after the last surviving potara earings to become the ultimate warrior.

Makai means 'demon realm' (or evil world, demon world, whichever you prefer), but yeah. Something about the Makaio or Makaioshin would be good. I would actually like to see the Makai itself, personally. They could have had a whole story there. It might bring some of the adventure back, like going to Namek did; except the Makai is like a whole separate universe by itself. It could be very interesting.

Rather than underpowering all the current characters for no real reason they would have been better off skipping straight along to Goku Jr's time period or maybe even later.
Actually I remember reading a fanfic where they lose access to the majority of their Ki, that was a fun little story and it managed to involve a lot of the minor characters, if a little unnecessarily.
I'm having a hard time imagining the characters getting stronger than they were in the Buu saga. The Jump Special showed that any threat at that stage would have been little more than a minor setback to their BBQ lunch...

I actually enjoyed DragonBall GT because it had the mindless action of Dragon Ball Z mixed with the innocence and fun of Dragonball, It was a perfect mix of both of the previous shows.
That is the Majin Buu saga. GT is more like mindless... everything, from beginning to end. It is just a big filler and thus God-awful. The direction they took the series is just retard. The only stuff that can be saved are Akira Toriyama's designs which are great, as always.

GT could have been so much better, but it wasn't.

I don't know if I hate it so much as I can't watch it in its entirety because of its terrible quality.

I don't hate GT. I actually prefer it to most of Z. Sure, it could have been a better series, mostly if certain story elements were either executed properly, or dropped entirely (*cough*Super17*cough*). I take it very much like DragonBall Evolution, a fun, turn off your brain journey.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Its because they changed the tone and mood of the DB and DBZ and turned it into some super strange galactic alien robot fest which Dragon Ball isn't.

Also, provided that I saw the dub first, the fact that the whole thing was a rap alien-hypno fest did not make it pleasant.

Saiyans
Freeza
Androids
Cell
Majin Buu

...?

Anyway, I like the character redesigns for GT. I like a lot of the story ideas. It's the absolute retardedness of the execution that pisses me off.

SSJ Vegeta is beating up SSJ Baby-Gohan, but base Goten tips the scales? Goten, who hasn't trained seriously in fifteen years, is able to overpower the training maniac Vegeta without even going Super?

For that matter, Gohan is able to fight Vegeta roughly even after the same fifteen years of sitting on his ass?

Nobody ever uses Super Saiyan if they can die in their base forms.

Gogeta gets a complete personality overhaul just so he won't win and it can all be down to ~GOKU~ and the ~SPIRIT BOMB~ that Toei also has a hardon for.

Yeah but this was different. That was more of an organic feeling (besides the Android arc) but GT did it for me. Whenever I watch those types of shows I get bad vibes.

Velasa wrote:Why don't I like GT...

One, nothing to do with Toriyama. I kind of have this... thing about respecting the original source/creator, and if the man says he's done he's done. Almost random people coming in and thinking they know the characters enough to make shit up and call it the real story on television... I'm not big on that. Especially when they do such a terrible job.

Two, the stories meander around inconsistently and collapse in on their own plot holes far too much of the time. Pilaf living, Son suddenly being a child with wildly inconsistent power levels, everything people have already mentioned, excetera on that point.

Three the art's just hideous most of the time. The squareness of it all with that plastic sheen where huge highlights on people's faces are paper white- seriously I understand stylization to a degree but they all just look ridiculous.

Four it's The Goku Show. What, we had other characters in this series? Naaaaah, forget them. Even that kid who was suppose to be the great successor- he's boring, let's just have him get the shit blown out of him twice and forget he exists again. I know the rest of the franchise does stuff like this but GT takes it to a new extreme.

Five, I like Piccolo. And what does Piccolo do in GT? Exactly. Die and end up in Hell. I festered about that for a looooong time before I found out that he ended up there for a reason besides the sins of the father, but it still burns in the back of your throat you know?
Uhh, this.

I can't think of anything else besides that. I really don't hate GT, but I can't say I'm much of a fan. I think the only reason I give it the time is because it has "Dragon Ball" in the title.

I also cannot stand the Super Saiyan 4 design. If they got rid of the pink and black, and made it all gold it would've looked much better.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that if the Dragonball series isn't continued by Akira Toriyama's , then it's automatically going to be crap. If a smart person comes along that knows what they are doing , it's possible to make something more original and unique to continue were Dragonball Z left off. I strongly disagree with you there. I only say this because I have original ideas of my own on how to continue the series. But it's not a big deal, DBZ has satisfied me, and there are other Animes. It's just that I think it can be done, and it's possible.
Hon, I've been writing fanfiction for this series for the last decade, I absolutely believe its possible. The difference between fics and GT is that we authors don't pretend we're cannon or god and we just make our worlds for ourselves and our readers with no great delusions of grandeur. GT, did not. That's the difference between them and us right there.

And number five. Laugh my ass, I knew you were going to bring up Piccolo because he ends up in Hell. That is terrible way to conclude one of your favorite characters?
Your grammar confuses me here so I can't actually tell if you're joking, agreeing, chiding me or anything else o_O My apologies if I misread you, but I practically want to have his children (asexual blah blah I know) so why wouldn't I have been upset that he goes through this whole massive point of turning himself around from straight-up deamon to a decent guy and still ended up stuck in Hell?

I don't know, all I know is Toei could have succeeded if they tried harder with the series. Even without the manga. They just weren't smart enough.
Did Toei pretend they were "gods"? I don't know about that either.

I can say this, I'm not into manga as much as other people are. I haven't even read all of the Dragonball manga books yet. I like full motion video. It's much easier and enjoyable to watch. Even with DBZ, I still don't know what is filler and what isn't. The only filler I am aware of and I don't like is Garlic Jr Saga. Not all filler is bad. I mean Vegeta's scene giving the middle finger in DBZ is cool. <---- Yeah, I just learned that apparently if they aren't lying.

When fillers become a problem is when there is 40 to 80 episodes of filler non stop. Like they did with Naruto. Which is easy since I can skip them.
I don't classify GT as fillers. I classify it as Toei's canon. An unofficial continuation of Akira Toriayama's Dragonball manga.

So therefore, I don't automatically misjudge GT and say it sucks because Akira Toriayma didn't write it. So I give it a fair chance. I'm not obsessed with what is filler and what is canon. Or manga related. Because I'm not a huge manga fan. I mean why would I read it, when I can watch it?

Sorry about that, this is what I said.

And I just meant it like this, I just thought it was funny how your favorite character ended up in hell to conclude the GT series. And I was just teasing you about it.

They could have succeeded if they tried harder, but it just seems like they didn't and just tacked a storyline on the end of a great show/series to screw up whatever conclusions had been reached in sewing up the actual series. The 'god' bit was an exaggeration on my part of course << but yeah, I just get touchy about respecting original intent.

On the thing about filler- I actually like filler. Hell, I love a lot of it- my deal with it is when it portrays people OOC or distorts the original story/plot. GT falls in that latter category in a lot of ways, particularly by its very nature of becoming the new endcap so... yeah, don't like it.

Thanks for clarifying that last bit as well hon, it was the question marks that were throwing me ^^; We're cool there.

I don't think GT is any worse than, say, most of the Buu arc of Dragonball. (Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Buu arc). When I compare the lame villains of GT to the many weird, and IMO stupid, forms of Buu there isn't a huge difference in my mind. And things like SSJ4 aren't really any dumber than SSJ3 ("We've already gone beyond the limits of Super Saiyan, but wait! We can even go beyond the limits of beyond the limits of Super Saiyan!!") and fusion (seriously, COMBINING CHARACTERS?! What the hell was Toriyama smoking?).

So yeah, the last arc of Dragonball feels about as disinteresting to me as GT.

I think that the Freeza and Saiyan sagas are enjoyable to the Manga more, but the Cell and Buu sagas are more enjoyable on the Anime. The Buu saga might have been faster, but at least other charecters made contributions, and there was suspense, and talk, and actually make sense. In the English Version, when Goku was coming out with that Ginormous Spirit Bomb that came out of nowhere, he said 'I'll give you one last chanch to give up!'. So, he almost destroyed the entire Earth, pracicly killed Vegeta, Gohan, and Goten, is made of pure evil, and he's going to give him another chanch after being revived from the dead by shenron to stop him? The Japanese Version of GT may have been bad, but the English Version was just awful. They must have hired all new script writters. You know what I mean?

GT's problem was its execution. I first saw it dubbed with the hip hop music and didn't like most of it; the loss of Faulconer was pretty devastating for me, especially in light of his replacement. Ironically, Menza had a really good score for DBZ Movie 6, so who knows what happened there.

This type of topic comes up regularly, so I'll just echo what has been said before. GT's dub is really very good when viewed with the Japanese score. Some of the VAs may be inappropriate to the characters, but it generally works well (and nothing beats Mr. Satan's dub performance). But when a show's poorly executed, a good dub can only go so far. Thus the problem with GT: good ideas generally (not turning Goku into a kid again. That was dumb.), but terrible execution.
