You do realize if you are watching the Dragon Box on a TV that you wouldn't see the edge of the film anyways, because of over scan?Metalwario64 wrote:Another thing I noticed about the Dragon Box image, is that(on the first and third comparisons anyway) it is so zoomed out that you can see the edges of the film on the corners... The show was framed within a safe zone anyway so you aren't losing anything that was intended to be viewed anyway.

Yeah, mostly, but it would be annoying if I am watching it on my PC monitor.SSVegetto wrote:You do realize if you are watching the Dragon Box on a TV that you wouldn't see the edge of the film anyways, because of over scan?Metalwario64 wrote:Another thing I noticed about the Dragon Box image, is that(on the first and third comparisons anyway) it is so zoomed out that you can see the edges of the film on the corners... Either way it doesn't make a big difference.

The colors on the season set look like absolute garbage compared to the dragonbox.

It's the first time in my life I see some screenshots with better image quality than the dragon boxes. There is almost no grain with no loss of background detail. The colours are great, better than DBox's (these DBox's screens look a little yellowish, just look at the eyes of the characters) and the detail of the image is as good as the Dragon Box's (sometimes it looks even better!). The only problem is the zoomed image.
Yeah, I think FUNimation really did well with their 'remastering' this time. I can't say for certain until I have it myself and watch it in motion, but the screencaps look gorgeous.

I like the color better in the Dragon Ball season sets. But I'll bet that the Dragon Box looks better in motion. I've watched episodes from the first FUNi DB DVDs and the picture was SO shaky. Jitter all over the damn place. According to Kanzentai the Dragon Box's remastering process included reduced jitter. That and you get more picture on the sides.
I'll be getting the DB season sets, no doubt about that. But if FUNimation releases DB Dragon Boxes, I'll double dip for those and probably use them more.

Wow. I like the dragon from back in the day.
Probably a stupid question... but which version shows the MOST of the screen? Is it the Dragon Box, the brick sets, or the single releases?
I've never understood why any version would cut off ANY of the picture... why not show us it all? Maybe there's some aspect I'm missing.

No, I noticed that too. Digital cleanliness doesn't necessarily equate picture quality, especially when you're talking about a product that's 25 years old.Undercooked Sausage wrote:I guess I'm alone, but I like the Dragon boxes colors several times more, on that first comparison picture, oolongs coat isn't even green and the whole room is purple instead of blue.

Okay, so I've read through the thread and didn't see any of this covered here, so I'll go ahead and report what I learned from asking about the sets on the FUNi Forums.
1.) Luckily, FUNi does not pull a GT and change the Japanese logo in the opening to their own. That's a plus, for sure.
2.) Unfortunately, unlike the GT season sets, FUNi didn't put any credits into the opening.
3.) Some characters have Japanese/English voice actor lists in the info booklet, but others (like Goku, notably) don't have any voice actor information.
4.) The English-dubbed songs are the same ones as the old releases, so those of you who were wondering for some reason whether or not they would be redubbed have no need to worry.
5.) Apparently, either FUNi wasn't able to obtain the remaining ending animations that they were never given or they just never tried. The episodes still only feature the second ending animation. It's not likely that we'll get opening two and endings three or four.
I do have a question for anyone who has the set, though. Whenever I ask this on the FUNi forums, nobody really knows what the heck I'm talking about, so I figured I would try asking here.
In episodes 19, 28, 29, and 30, have the insert songs been retained in the dub or are they still missing? I know in the case of episode 19, the song was always in the dub, but I would like to know if it's still there.

It's likely that episode 19's was kept because it was just the start of the song with no lyrics. Guess that means FUNi removed all the other ones on-purpose for the sole reason of them containing Japanese lyrics. Xenophobia much?MagicBox wrote:Okay, so I've read through the thread and didn't see any of this covered here, so I'll go ahead and report what I learned from asking about the sets on the FUNi Forums.

That was likely the case back when the two-discs sets came out, but not anymore. FUNi kept all of GT's Japanese insert songs in the dub, so if they happen to still be missing this time in the DB sets, it might have something to do with the materials FUNi was given. I just want to know if we have better luck this time around.Guess that means FUNi removed all the other ones on-purpose for the sole reason of them containing Japanese lyrics. Xenophobia much?

Yep, a company that buys distribution rights to Japanese anime, redubs and distributes bi-lingual DVDs with the complete Japanese version always available should be considered xenophobic based on the fact that they leave out some insert songs. I'm glad we throw around that word so leisurely--similar to "rape" and comparing someone to Hitler.Big Boss wrote:It's likely that episode 19's was kept because it was just the start of the song with no lyrics. Since we're in the business of suppositions, I'm going to say that it interfered with their dub and decided not keep them in.
Just checked my two-disc sets and the insert songs are on the Japanese sub.

In the case of Dragon Ball though, when they first got it, this is not the case. They remove any reference to it being Japanese, add American slang, rap, music, and other random things that are American only. So don't give me this bullshit lecture about how me talking about an anime company's completely Americanized version of a show, and using Xenophobia in that context, is similar to how "rape" is used, and comparing someone to Hitler. We're talking about Dragon Ball here, not Z. I don't recall at all in any of Dragon Ball where they add rap music. Of course slang might venture its way in since it's an American dub. In actuality, Dragon Ball is pretty loyal to the Japanese original, sans some insert songs.Big Boss wrote:In the case of Dragon Ball though, when they first got it, this is not the case. For one thing, I wasn't lecturing, just pointing out how you quickly jumped to conclusions over Dragon Ball (not Z) being xenophobic--since this is a Dragon Ball discussion--by evidence of not including insert songs. And secondly, take some of your own advice and learn how to take some criticism for your statements.
I mean why even post on this site if you don't want people to counterpoint you? It happens quite regularly here.

I was simply stating that you were overreacting about comparing what I said, to the word rape and Hitler.
