We got some serious interest. Awesome. I'm thinking maybe we could have the meet during a nice and early October weekend. (I say nice because the weather should be generally cool at most and not frigid) As for Kinokuniya, personally I never been there so I'm definitely going to check it tomorrow after work. If it's a cool spot I would be down for setting up a meet there.
If New Jersey is an option (haha XD this is for half the forum) isn't there a Mitsuwa in Edgewater? I read they do shuttles from Manhattan.
xD
xD
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Went there earlier this year actually and it was freaking awesome. It's where I got my kanzenban 11 (which I had for less than a day before I got robbed, frikkin Jersey) and a bunch of tasty tasty things I wish I had more access to.bkev wrote:If New Jersey is an option (haha XD this is for half the forum) isn't there a Mitsuwa in Edgewater? I am however slightly more iffy on Jersey though because I'm just a little pissed at it right now <_< Maybe we could like... go there after meeting or something. I don't know how comfortable I'd be going there by myself and their drivers are goddamn insane. Course this is just me muttering.

I couldn't make it to Kinokuniya today like I planned, I told a friend about the place and he wanted to see it too. So pulled it off till tomorrow so we can both check it out together. I'm going to take some pictures of the place and post it here after the visit. I know they are a bunch of pics online but few more wouldn't hurt. Also I'm going to check out a few other places in the city as well, just trying to keep options open.
I like to try to keep this meet NY this year since I am more familiar with the city than any where else... And I thought Mitsuwa was like Japanese super market? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.bkev wrote:If New Jersey is an option (haha XD this is for half the forum) isn't there a Mitsuwa in Edgewater? I read they do shuttles from Manhattan.

Back from the city and here are some pics of Kinokuniya and Book-Off. Both store mangers were very polite to me and had no problems answering my questions and allowing me to take some pictures even in some places which are not allowed.
I'm not great at taking pictures and these are the best I could do.

On the first floor it kind of looks like a normal bookstore, they have magazine on the right, new arrivals (books toys etc) displayed in front and of course Japanese and English literature.

Oh yeah and some shirts and costumes in the back of the first floor.

On the second floor, which I'm sure most otakus hangout, the cafe and manga plus more. The cafe has a few tables (I didn't take picture of the whole cafe, sorry). By the time I was there about 6:15pm all the seats were occupied. The manager told me that the cafe is usually busy during lunch and from 5:30 til closing.

Playing not to far from the cafe, Dragonball Z Japanese Dub. They must have known I was coming.

Book-Off is much smaller book store and I believe the prices are cheaper than Kinokuniya. I think. (I know, I know, should have checked out the prices too... )

Both stores are in walking distance of each other and closest to Bryant Park.
I'm still amazed that I have never been to either of these book stores until today. All I ever do is hangout at bookstores (comic book stores), how the hell did I missed these? Kinokuniya looks like it'll be a great spot to meet if the cafe isn't full by then. I'm going to have to time this just right. If anything the park is just right outside with plenty of places to sit down and relax.

Dude, that looks awesome. o_o I'm so for going there.
It'd be smart if we get enough interest to figure out when they're open, because for the transit time it would be cool to have at least a few hours.

Since everyone was gushing about it, and since I went to the place and found it cool, I've decided to hold the meet as the Kinokuniya book store. Now, I've checked the Kinokuniya event schedule on their website and they have a list of events for the month of September. I'm going to call the store tomorrow and ask about any special store events for the month of October. I want to make sure the meet doesn't fall on any of those days.BUFF Trunks wrote:Kinokuniya is having a Eureka 7 day this Sunday thats sponsored by the upcoming NY Anime Festival con so it'll most likely be crowded. These usually have these types of events periodically for cosplay, or J-Pop related stuff.
Before the meet we need to choose the date on which most of us can attend. I would like to pick a weekend early in the next month, so I'd love to have those who would attend choose the date. (Probably on Saturday or Sunday, either the first or second week of Oct.) So, if you want to go, sound off.
Kinokuniya closes at 8:00pm Mon-Sat and 7:30 on Sun so this will most likely be an afternoon'ish meet. Just so everyone knows, just so we're clear. Also, there might be a good chance of a crowded cafe by lunch time, so if need be we can try to grab a light bite elsewhere.
Once we choose a good date, I'm going to make another thread with an announcement (or I might just edit this post) about the NYC DB Meet. That will provide a place for those who definitely will come to say so, and give a few folks who aren't sure to make up their minds by a set date.

I might be in New York in December, but I guess that's too far down the line for this.

We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.
