This episode covered a total of 45 pages. Picking up where the last episode ended, we got the last 3 pages of chapter 260, and the entirity of chapter 261, 262 and 263.
Anime-wise, it covered the rest of DBZ episode 51, as well as 52 and roughly 3/4th of 53. Episode 52 started at about the same point as chapter 261, and covered up to the end of chapter 262, while episode 53 covered all of chapter 263 and the second half of chapter 264, skipping over the scene where Zarbon returns to Freeza, and showing us Kuririn and Dende arriving at the Eldest's house. The scene at the end of chapter 263, showing us Vegeta getting up from the pool Zarbon knocked him into, was placed after the 264 material in DBZ#53, but moved to it's proper place in Kai.
Notable cuts are about 7 minutes worth of filler from episode 52, showing Tenshinhan and Piccolo succeed at making Kaiou laugh, and a 5 minute or so scene showing Tenshinhan and the others chasing Bubbles from episode 53. Some other filler scenes cutting to Kuririn and Dende during Zarbon and Vegeta's battle from episode 53 were left in, however, including one where Dende mentions that Nameck has 3 suns, which was mentioned by the narrator in chapter 264 of the manga.
It's also worth noting that the battle between Monster Zarbon and Vegeta was somewhat rewritten in the anime for no apparant reason, and oddly enough, a scene where Zarbon tells Vegeta that Freeza is also able to transform was cut completely despite this being somewhat of an important plot element. Vegeta will later refer to Zarbon having told him this, both in the manga and anime, creating a slight plot hole.

The scene only appears in the manga, neither DBZ nor DBK includes it for some reason.Amigo Ten wrote:You mean that scene of Zarbon telling Vegeta about Freeza's transformation was cut from Kai, or cut from the anime altogether?

The cuts between the old animation and the new animation were so obvious, it was like the Dodoria episode all over again.
It's like the Zeta Gundam movies.

Except there's a small break between every sentence. My friend and I tried to watch these in lieu of watching the entire Zeta Gundam series. Impossible. We just opened our eyes wide and didn't speak for two hours, reading subtitles as fast as we could and hoping desperately to get some sense of what was going on. I agree it was a nightmare, but it makes Kai seem slow.penguintruth wrote:The cuts between the old animation and the new animation were so obvious, it was like the Dodoria episode all over again.

Here are the re-drawn shots...
Goku flipping...

Goku resting...

Goku talking to himself...

Goku talking to King Kai...

Yamcha and Tien listening to King Kai...

Zarbon's blast...

Zarbon talking about who does his taxes...

A shot of Monster Zarbon, or as I like to call him Monbon.

Vegeta in shock that Zarbon totally kicked his ass...

Holy shit! What the fuck just happened!? Is that fan art?!...

And finally, new bumpers...

I also quite liked Zarbon's new voice, but then, I barely remember the original.Rory wrote:The redrawn moments were terrible. But I liked Zarbon's new voice, and Ryo was pretty damn good in this episode, especially when he smacked Zarbon's blast away.

Yeah. Sometimes I think the whole episode is redrawn, but that doesn't mean I think its bad. I mean, have you seen some of the original animation? Kai's being done on the cheap anyhow.Amigo Ten wrote:I'll be honest. I've barely ever noticed a redrawn scene being off, even when they were supposedly awful.
I really enjoyed this episode, however. I didn't even notice how big a difference there was between normal Zarbon and Monster Zarbon until he changed back to normal. O.o

Man, I haven't done this in awhile, but I figured what the hey, right? I'm only going to touch on one thing, the final re-animated scene with Freeza and Zarbon. I can tell you right off the bat why this was re-animated; Zarbon's head was originally out of the frame, and to crop that would have been a nightmare. Though at the same time, why not make it look better?! This just looks like utter shit (pardon my French). In fact, the way the scene is set up is a little different. After Vegeta crawls out of the "lake" he created, it fades to this scene. However, in Z it doesn't fade at all, but simply switches scenes. Also, in Z, it started with just Freeza on the screen and zoomed out to reveal Zarbon's forms. In Kai, they started partially zoomed out, so we don't get a "nice" close-up of Freeza.
This shot alone makes me 100% confident they don't care what it looks like. Why in the world would you not update Freeza?! Toei, don't you have animators that are skilled enough to redraw these scenes? I mean, you could trace most of it, just redraw his face and fat tail. It is pure laziness if you ask me.

You'll notice that they've shifted Zarbon down so that he fits nicely in the cropped frame. However, you'll also notice that they made his face on the right look much worse than it originally was. I thought we were tracing?! I also love the now totally obvious giant dots on his armor, the top of monster Zarbon's head has no bumps (it's all smooth up there), and his little ornament is magically dangling from nothing... Who needs consistency, right?

Anywho, this was fun. Maybe I'll have to try to do this every once in awhile. Now to get the pages done for Kanzentai...
