Dragon Ball Kai DVD\Blu-ray Dissection!

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Tue Sep 22, 2009 7:00 pm

Hi! I know you probley just skimmed through the images then scrolled back up here to start reading, I know, I know... Anyway, lets just jump right into this!

Before I opened them there was an advertisement for the DragonBall card you get inside. Shit man, these Dragon Battler cards seem to come with every new Dragon Ball item. I actually already have this card, don't remember where from but eh...

Image

Edit: It seems I forgot to scan the promo card, I don't think anyone really cares about it, maybe some people do, I don't know. Oh well, here is a snap shot of it

Image

The DVD case is exactly the same as all previous DragonBall single disc, so that's a plus...

Image

Here are the backs, yea they seem to be the same except that the DVD shots are in wide screen. I like that it tells you when the episode aired, they also did this on the previous single disc so yay.

Image

Image

So after taking the shrink wrap off, and taking the slip case off the Blue Ray I saw the back of the case didn't have the episode summaries like it has on the slip case. Instead we get a shot of Goku! What the Hell?

Image

Also, the slip case has the title in English while the actual case is in Japanese.

Image

When I opened the Blu-ray case I saw a wall of text on the left side, I thought it was episode summaries or something like that, but its not...

Image

The discs... I gotta admit, that DVD art looks pretty shitty. The Blu-ray actually looks kinda cool though, no?

Image

Image

As for promotional pamphlets that usually come with DVDs\Blu-rays, these didn't really come with much. Just a Happinet paper and an ad for Animo...

Image

So I pop the DVD in and... Jeez the menu is pretty bad. It kinda looks like a bootleg DVD. I guess the pattern is going to be to put the DVD cover art on the right, and the episodes on the left. :?

Image

As for extras, we only get a trailer for Raging Blast...

Image

The Blu-ray menu on the other hand looks pretty cool. Being I don't have a Blu Ray drive I had to take a snap shot...

Image

And that's about it. I would love to post some Blu-ray shots but it's not gonna happen. The Blu-ray looks awesome. Well, I don't know if it actually looks awesome or if my judgment is clouded by excitement of seeing DragonBall in that clarity. But whatever here are some random DVD shots...

I can't wait to get the first DVD, it'll be a momento, I won't get the rest of the series... maybe a few volumes...

And definitely wait for a Funimation release, yes...

Good dissection Tanooki, but, the chest hole... :P

That looks uglier than I remember...

And Raditz sure looks upset about that chocolate cake splattering on his chest.

S'a shame, really. I had some hopes that it was uncensored in the home release. At least this kind of rampant censorship isn't widespread through most of the rest of what's aired so far.

Did you really expect them not to be? Am I the only one that assumed whatever was on TV was going to be on these releases?

Also, I'll bring up another issue that hasn't really been discussed in a long time, but is it really considered censorship when it is a whole "new" show? Though I will say, I don't think it's so much a matter of censorship, as it is that whoever drew this was lazy and didn't give a rats ass about it. But then again, I could be totally wrong.

Great job as always Tanooki!

I don't see it as censorship, DBK may use heavily produced from older materials (i.e. the pre-existing DBZ), but with everything else it pretty much is a totally different show. Same story, new recordings, new music, new edit, and produced on the cheap, but still...it's something relatively new!

Whether it's "new" or "rehashed stuff with a few re-drawn scenes" always seems to change depending on who is arguing what. Personally, I see nothing wrong with a burn from a Chi context, but there's that whole artistic integrity thing (same argument as to why just about everyone brings up Bulma's boobs in almost every manga thread) that comes into play, too.

I dunno. Luckily this isn't a huge matter since the Dragon Box footage is going to become widely available very soon.

Is anyone else getting the impression that they're really pushing the Blu-rays over the DVDs? And I say that solely based on the menu, disc, and packaging differences.

Well the show is HD, and they've mentioned that a lot in the advertising. What kind of stupid company would brag about how they had Dragon Ball in HD and then just focus on DVDs? :P

I agree, I'm just saying it seems they're not getting equal treatment at all. If they're gonna put money into both, wouldn't they want to sell both?

Maybe they figure people who want all the bells and whistles would pick up the Blu-Ray? The DVDs are for people who just want to watch the show and don't want to spend too much money, and the Blu-Rays are for people who are willing to pay a little extra for the "full experience". It's like when the theatrical and director's cut of a movie are released at the same time, the Director's Cut has all the special features and the Theatrical Cut is pretty much just the movie.

The new artwork.... *_*
Looking at it makes me wish Kai's animation had been brand-new done from the ground up instead of mostly a repackaged, edited Z with some redrawn scenes. TT_TT

I haven't been following FMA's Brotherhood lately, but that's the type of thing I wanted Kai to be. I do like Kai, but.....Brotherhood gets brand new animation. Why must Toei be so cheap? TT_TT
(Though if they're being cheap for the reason of secretly planning a new DB movie, I can forgive them. Like if this is their way to raise money to afford such a thing. But if there is no ulterior motive that would benefit fans, then Toei's just being cheap. >_< )

I seriously hope we get another Jump Special next year (I know we won't get one this year) because those covers look beautiful.

So what's the verdict on Kai Blu-Rays? Does it look better or worse than unscaled Dragon Box DVDs?

By that I mean, which do you prefer?

I think the same thing every time I see new animation. It was such a WASTED opportunity. But if they ever revisit the concept of "refreshing" the series, they'll have do do something different. So if Kai means that the next "refresh" will be all new animation starting with Dragon Ball, then I'm all for it.

That's true about the next refresh. They'd have no excuse then. I also worry about how much time it feels like that they're wasting. Ms. Nozawa's not getting any younger (According to ANN, she's going to turn 73 next month.) and neither is the rest of the cast. @_@

I think its also why "Ossu!" was such a breath of fresh air for me. It was new animation in action and a new story to go with it. It wasn't that long, and it wasn't as action-packed, but you could tell Toei put hard work and effort into it.

Personally, I'd like to see another Jump special taking place in that era of the storyline (the 10 years between Buu and Uub) simply because I find bored-out-of-his-mind!Goku incredibly interesting due to how he continually tried to take out his boredom on Vegeta. And the fact that Bulma lets Goku get away with it.

If they can come up with a new DB movie though, I'd like to see something with action in it. I've watched some of Toei's recent animated movies and I know they could do some amazing work if they tried.
On hiatus.
