Deep Thought wrote:"It was a good series, but it has it's flaws. Few of the characters have any backstory at all, and no explanation as to why they are who they are. This makes the characters very two-dimensional, and extremely hard to understand or sympathize with. Even the villain's power is unexplained; we have no idea why they are so powerful, they just are. Also, when a villain prime is done, the villain themselves just entirely disappears, like, POOF, we never see him or her again, because no one gives a fuck about them, I guess, onto the next villain. So the series really looks like it is just generating evil meatbags for the heroes to fight, then disposing of said evil meatbag when it is "done" only to generate another bland evil meatbag for all the heroes to fight. This is just a small flaw with the series, there's the annoyance of the Dragon Balls, the fact that the heroes (and the audience) never really learn anything, and how obsolete many previously important character will become. Dragon Ball Z was no doubt influential for it's time, but the same can be said for the walkman, and that doesn't mean that I'm going to regard it as a superior product to that of the I-Pod. Over all, its fine if people want to continually respect Dragon Ball, but I have long since moved on."

What a bunch of fucking idiots. Wait a second......
Lol, you make it sound as if that is a majority opinion. Sure, for the most part, it's correct, but what makes Dragon Ball bad from a storytelling perspective and why most don't like it are two different things.

It just sounded like whoever said that only watched DBZ with no knowledge of Dragon Ball.

The fact MAL has "Original" and "U.S." pages for DBZ is astounding all on its own.

Also, MAL is a horrible place for stats.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I didn't like how someone commented in that One Piece VS DB thread about how the villains in DragonBall aren't as "compelling" as the villains in One Piece.

I think a planet selling, all-powerful, sadistic, galatic overlord, with badass transformations is much more "compelling" than One Piece has ever put out.

That wasn't exactly what people were saying in the other thread. I'm not really sure what this has to do with new anime fans and old anime fans, anyway. I'm an old fan, I love 80s stuff, but I also like One Piece and its villains. They do a good job of being hateable bastards, which makes for good bad guys in my opinion.

One could shoot back that the ruthless, racist, and torturous Arlong is every bit as 'compelling' as Freeza. After all, disillusioned after the treatment of fishmen by humans, Arlong turned to conquering islands, reaping from them outrageous amounts of money for their continued survial and killing those who couldn't afford it. He straight up shot a women in the face point-blank in front of her little girls because she could only afford to buy their safety and not her own. He then goes on to promise one of these girls she can work as a theif and navigator for him to buy the village back from him and after ten long years of work has a navy commodore he has in his pocket steal the nearly completely payment from said girl, prolonging her own suffering as well as the suffering of her townspeople.

That sounds an awful lot more compelling to me, espicially when all we ever see is Freeza's attack on Namek and even then there's no real time to become emotionally invested in the new characters and their plight.
