Zephyr wrote:And that's to say nothing of how pretty much impossible it is to capture what made the original run of the series so great. I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Mind sending me a copy of that PM, too? You make these movies sound really interesting.Kunzait_83 wrote:Check your PM box.Innagadadavida wrote:Can you give me some suggestions. Where should I start? Which movies had a strong influence on Dragon Ball in particular?

It's a DAMN good read, guys. I haven't even finished yet, I had to take a break because I'm responding as I'm reading and I've already spent an hour and a half on this response. With Kunzait_83's permission, I can forward it, but I think he'd be better off posting it. He said he plans on going more in depth with it in a full on thread.
This is so interesting. I'd love to hear Kunzait_83 on the podcast talking about this stuff.

Now THERE'S a podcast I'd love to see! ...Mike? You reading this?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Hammer was a rapper and I don't think he was in any noteworthy movies.DBZGokuSaiyan wrote:Wow, I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet, but oh well.![]()
(In the dub...) When Freeza throws a huge rock at Goku, he says "Hammer time!!!", and then proceeds to smash it with his fist.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

You could say that it was a reference to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3, which also referenced M.C Hammer.Raki wrote:Hammer was a rapper and I don't think he was in any noteworthy movies.DBZGokuSaiyan wrote:Wow, I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet, but oh well.![]()

I didn't notice the rest of the topic's title.
Well, then again... I guess music videos could count as cinema. Whatever.

I would enjoy the PM as well if its not going to be made as a post on here.CashmanX wrote:Me four!
I tried watching movies like The Chinese Connection/Fist of Fury, but I wouldn't know where to go after that...
It would make a great thread though, as an insight to many things that inspired Dragon Ball.

Don't tell me that you've never heard of the great Donnie Yen! His latest slew of martial arts movies have been consistently amazing!!!Metalwario64 wrote:I would enjoy the PM as well if its not going to be made as a post on here.CashmanX wrote:Me four!

I managed to find a playlist that has some nods to DB... but I remember it having more than just this:

Meh, more or less interesting.

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

Oh... here's a question: During the Freeza saga, there are two separate scenes where characters (namely, Vegeta and Freeza) point their fingers at an enemy and say "BANG!"... and the word echoes eerily. This has got to be a nod to an old(er) movie. Does anybody know where it's from?
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
Dirty Harry, maybe?kenisu3000 wrote:Oh... here's a question: During the Freeza saga, there are two separate scenes where characters (namely, Vegeta and Freeza) point their fingers at an enemy and say "BANG!"... and the word echoes eerily. I was gonna say Cowboy Bebop, but obviously that can't be it.kenisu3000 wrote:Oh... here's a question: During the Freeza saga, there are two separate scenes where characters (namely, Vegeta and Freeza) point their fingers at an enemy and say "BANG!"... and the word echoes eerily.
