What if Funimation did a faithful redub of Z?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I mean come on, people here are upset over voice replacements in Kai of (in the long run) minor characters. And as they should be. How would you feel if Ryo Horikawa was suddenly replaced in the version that you know and love in favor of, oh let's say Goro Naya (Zenigata from Lupin III)? You'd be pissed off.
But is Dragon Ball Z all that popular anymore? I don't think it would bother that many people, actually. I didn't even notice the voice change (though, the new cast was just imitating the old one).

I'm not so bothered by voice replacements. If Vegeta had gotten a new voice actor for DBK, that wouldn't be a problem for me 'cause I can always watch DBZ if I want to hear Ryo Horikawa's Vegeta. I think DBZ deserves a high quality English dub and if a new cast is required to make that happen, then that's fine by me.

Hilighted the important part. "For me".

For me, and plenty of others, the Ocean dub was the first exposure to DBZ, and the Funimation voices will always be, "The ones that took over."

If they can replace the voices once, they can do it again. And they probably should, considering the quality of their in house dub.
You're missing the point entirely. My point is that the amount of people angered in 1999 after a cast with a longevity of just 2 years and the amount of people that would be angered today after a decade is far greater in favor of today.

I really don't think there are so many people that would be angered over a change in the dub cast. I've found that most of the people just accept the dub because either they're just used to them, or there isn't any better dub. But if the new dub was better, I don't think either groups would mind.

Maybe they wouldn't even need to replace all the VAs, just some of the more prominent problem ones.

He does have a point on the ten years though. Lots of guys were pretty upset when the Pokemon cast got replaced. Heck, the theme song aren't too good now either.

Agreed. Goku would need a new voice actor 'cause Sean Schemmel lives in New York now and doesn't even work for Funimation, and some characters (i.e. Freeza) need to be recast, but the WHOLE cast doesn't need to be replaced; just better directing perhaps.

I haven't heard much of the new cast (only a couple minutes), but I did like the new voice for Kasumi/Misty (preferred it actually).

Well, that's because the Pokemon cast was replaced with poor imitations of the previous VAs.

Trust me, in ten years, if they replace them again, these new VAs may have a few fans bitching about them being replaced, too.

It's the price you pay for progression.

For the record, if anyone cares, Kojirou/James is the only one that's still kind of terrible on Pokemon.

For some unknown reason (that spared the world a post like this for a while. :P ), I was feeling pretty apathetic toward the concept until I started read/thinking some of the posts on page4...

At which point I realized, "Oh, right. I can't read subtitles. A proper redub might actually get me to watch the whole thing."
Blasted group mindset. :P
I will say, though, that most of what I saw of the redub of seasons 1-2 didn't leave me impressed. Trying to imagine how a "propper" redub would go doesn't leave me feeling particularly eager, either. For some reason I'm imagining either something as underwhelming as the "Ultimate Uncut Edition", or something like... ur... that one DBGT dub (Blue Water, was it?) where most of the voices sounded very generic (and like a whole three people were in the show)... eh, I dunno.
I think I'd compare a recasting to something like X-Men's nineties series Vs. X-Men Evolution. Keeping in mind that there's a large volume of Evolution I haven't seen, I don't know that the differing voices bothered me all that much. (So far as I'm concerned, Wolverine and Xavier from the nineties win a million times over, but that wasn't reason enough to abort Evolution. The huge change in style, how easy it was to get lost after missing an episode or two, and that once a lot of characters started filling the roster, I couldn't even guess who was who... Ur... Yeah. :P ).

As for Kai... I have no interest in a Kai dub. Way to vacate the point. :?

Thinking about it now, Funimation could've easily redubbed everything with a faithful script prior to the releases of the orange bricks, right? Or am I way off? They did certainly re-dub seasons 1 and 2, but why not the rest?
The transition is very noticeable when viewing the episodes that were re-done to the exact episode that Schemmel and the rest took over during the Ginyu saga. Schemmel was really off when he first came on board, where as he started getting the hang of things in the Cell arc.

FUNimation's pretty busy with their newer titles now. Heck, in two years they did 195 episodes of One Piece and the eighth film, in addition to other 13-26 episode long series'.
