The narrator is Kaiou?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

The narrator is Kaiou?

Post by SHINOBI-03 » Sun Oct 11, 2009 5:48 am

Yeah, I know being played by the same voice actor doesn't mean they are the same character...

But, have you ever thought of the story being told to us from Kaiou's perspective and point of view?

After all, he is the lord of the Northen Galaxy, which includes the Earth.

Very unlikely, I'd think. Kaiou isn't always aware of what happens with Goku and didn't know anything about him until he reached his planet.

It obviously was not intended, but I've always saw it like this, as personal thing.
The guy is a god, who trained Goku, and heled him out several times afterward.
The way he narrates his story, it really feels like we're being told this great epic story from him.
Like I say, completely opinionated, but it's always the way I felt.

He could be retelling the story long after it happened, for posterity I suppose. I made a post to that effect aways back:
Kaio's grandkid: Hey grandpa, whatever happened to your planet? And why are you dead?

Kaio: Well you see, when Goku teleported Cell to my planet, Cell-

Kaio's grandkid: Wait, what?

Kaio: Goku, a Saiyan I trained, who was fighting an android from the Red Ribbon Army-

Kaio's grandkid: What the hell are you talking about? Start at the beginning!

Kaio: Oh all right. *grumble grumble* But don't say I didn't warn you..."Long, long ago, deep in the mountains..."
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?

Yeah, the notion of Kaio having a grandkid doesn't really make sense now that we know he's a member of an asexual race born from fruit. Just replace "Kaio's grandkid" with "young Shinjin", I guess.

The main thing I hated about King Kai and the narrator having the same voice is that it made the scene where Vegeta's getting his ass kicked by Frieza kinda confusing. I couldn't tell whether it was the narrator or King Kai talking.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I never had that problem with Z myself, but for some reason when watching Kai there were lots of times when I got confused over whether Kaio or the narrator was talking.

I don't see why he still couldn't be his 'grandfather', ala Gokû and Gohan.

I've always had my own theory on this.

I'd always figured the DB Universe to be a story told from a grandfatherly-type to a child, and the reason Kaio has the narrators voice is because the narrator identifies with Kaio most, and wants to make the child laugh.

That's why the MOVIE ANNOUNCER narrator in the Funi dub always irked me. I always thought of the entire franchise to be a story told to you from a grandfatherly-type.

Interestingly enough, the story mode of Sparking is voiced by Sean Schemmel's Kaiou in the dub track instead of their usuall narrator.

This kinda reminds me of Yu Yu Hakusho.
This was done for both the Japanese version and the Dub, but the Narrator is the same voice as the Blue Ogre who always hangs around Koenma. (His name is Jyoji IIRC, but don't quote me on that) and it's that way for the entire series.
Whenever Yusuke has a fight, you see Koenma and the Ogre watching on a video screen, and Koenma is shown able to pause and rewind it.

so then, on the second to last episode, Koenma hands the ogre a stack of Videos and says "Ogre, Edit these, add some Naration and we'll make a TV show out of this".

It was hysterical.

Maybe this is the same thing? XD
Nah, just kidding, but it is a pretty neat notion. The Idea of Kaio telling the "Legend of Son Goku" to someone is a neat Idea. It also lends itself to the final narration of "This is the Story as far as I can tell you, I can't say anymore. Of course the world would come under peril many times from now, but it will always be safe because it's protected by a great bunch of guys!" (Paraphrased since I don't wana Dig out the book)
It's like, that's Kaio saying that XD

That narrator voice in Yu Yu Hakusho is my most favourite from all the anime series, it's kinda sympathic for my ears don't know why..... I mean that Japanese one of course

Yeah, I like this idea. Because in a story such as this, an omniscient narrator is basically like God. And so in that sense it stands to reason that Kaiou-sama would be the narrator. But as someone already mentioned, while Kaiou is able observe a lot of things across long distances, he is not omniscient. And he almost certainly wasn't even aware of Gokuu's existence until after he died. Yet, he is still the narrator even from the beginning of the series. Clearly this doesn't mesh logically.

Yeah, I seem to recall that being a problem on at least one occasion. Due the fact that Kaiou-sama likes to talk to himself all the time in a brooding manner. And also the fact that the narrator often expresses surprise and personality, such as when Trunks first appears: "W- What the...?! There's another Super Saiyan?!! Who is this boy who has miraculously cut Freeza clean in two?"

Yeah, that series also had a good narration effect that helped setup the dramatic tension.

There's also a point near the end, after the final tournament wraps up, where the narrator is giving the closing narration and suddenly it turns out to be Jorge/whatever, standing there talking to himself. Koenma asks him what the heck he's doing.
