Quick Question (FUNimation Dub Music Shift)

Post by Ultimate_DB_Fan » Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:22 pm

What episode did Bruce Faulconer's score take over? Was it 53, 54 or 55?

After the first 53 episodes, Saban basically dumped FUNimation and left them on their own to distribute the series. So, FUNimation hired Faulconer Music Productions for unknown reasons (most likely because they were the cheap option) to score the music and hired their own voice cast for their third season of the series, which began with episode 54. And the rest is history...

Welp, may as well ask while I can (simply for reference), but was it 67 or 68 the music shifts from Johnson's score to the work Faulconer did? I've merely Seasons One and Nine.

That's a good question. How does it work on the season sets?

For those who don't know, the original DVD release of those episodes were a little weird. The first "Captain Ginyu" disc ("Assault") had two entirely separate video tracks for the dub and the Japanese versions, which I think was the only time they ever did this for DBZ.

The reason was to get the episodes for the dub matching up to the Japanese episodes (due to all the cutting and censoring from the previous seasons). The first dub episode ("54") was super-long compared to the other episodes, since it spanned... oh geeze, I don't even remember how it worked out.

So yeah. How did this all get resolved? I suppose I could pop in my various discs and spot-check, but quite frankly, I have little memory of those episodes and probably couldn't tell apart the dub scores...

I remember 68 was always the earliest episode in our archives (we used Japanese numbering)

I'd figure as much. Mike mentioned the first episode (episode '54') was pretty much used to resynch the episodes, so it'd make sense if it worked almost as a standalone episode 67.5 (ala Gohan Attacks/Piccolo the Super Namek).

Yeah, on the Season sets they begin episode 68 at the point it should begin at. For the second half of episode 67 that was originally part of episode 54, it still uses Nathan Johnson's score. Conveniently, in episode 54, they placed a song at the exact point that the actual episode 68 begins, so they didn't have to change any BGM around. The song that they used is the song that always plays when the narrator starts talking at the end of an episode.

(Assuming you're talking about FUNimation's dub primarily...) Well geeze, you're nowhere near North America, right? Why would you be? :P
MCDaveG wrote:but out of curiosity, after Funimation's complete tke over of Z series broadcast, it wasn't Faulconer in first episodes??
Nope. The first two "seasons" were re-scored by someone named Nathan Johnson. I think he was an internal FUNimation employee...? The "Ultimate Uncut Edition" used this score for its home video releases / Cartoon Network airing. It's also what was present on the orange bricks.

The hilarity of the situation is that it would appear one of the reasons why Faulconer Productions wasn't re-hired do to those seasons was due to fan outcry (of disgust) with the score at the time. I saw Faulconer at conventions sitting by his lonesome self in the dealer's room with no-one lining up for his autographs/purchases. Of course, that may be entirely anecdotal and based on my own self-imposed-altered-history of the time, but it seems like it certainly contributed.

Fast-forward to today and the kids of the time who weren't literate enough to pour their hearts and souls of praise onto the internet at the time now suddenly coming out of the woodwork with their own foul-mouthed tirades of hate aimed squarely at FUNimation for their musical-track decisions. Funny how history repeats itself, and how ultimately FUNimation appeals to the older audience every single time, even if they find some other way to screw things up in the process... :)

Run a search for @funimation on Twitter, and watch it flow. Everything I hate about anime fans in 140 characters or less! :)

Wow, when you put it that way, I sort of feel sorry for him.

I mean, I don't like his DBZ music, or rather, I don't think it fits the show as well as the Kikuchi score, but that has to be a real bummer, sitting there at a con with nobody caring. I mean, it's not his fault Funimation put a soundtrack into the show that didn't belong, he was just hired to do a job.

I'm not going to shed a tear for him, though. I bet if he sat at a booth now, he'd get plenty of folks, telling him how it was a "crime" that they didn't put his music on the Dragon Box.

Yes, I believe that somebody is capable of shooting him......
But still I don't like that music, but I feel sorry for him. The music can be really bad, but it's not his fault that they screwed the dragon ball plus....
Man if they'll shoot him, the sound editor of the series will must die by a horrible death. That's really interesting to make TV show without spaces between tracks and stick one after another, from my point of view, this should be done by idiot only.... Also without film music knowledge if there is shot on mountains and music that plays is like Rob Zombie breed with Prodigy.

Can you do me a favor? Stop talking about killing people and entire religions?

I mean, this is a fucking DBZ board. Goodness gracious.
