This is a small report from a live Q&A they did today:
http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php ... stcount=31
No dub previews on the dbox and putting the dub on there was a "after thought"
I can't believe they weren't about to put a dub on there.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

The news just keeps getting better and better.
I feel like I'm living in a dream world, almost.

I was going to wait to make a thread about this until FUNimation put up the video of the Q&A session on YouTube, as they said to expect. But I suppose if it's already done, it's already done, and I or someone else can link the video when it happens.
That said, I will personally be watching this thread like a hawk.
Anyway, this is good news in that, hopefully, it means the Japanese Mono track will sound fantastic, since the emphasis is so heavily placed on it. I'm a little bummed out that the opening and ending themes won't be getting dubbed either (which was also relayed in the Q&A session), but oh well.

Well, they did go out of their way to cater to the Japanese track's fans.
Still, I find it hard to believe they only added a dub as a last thought. That's sort of shooting themselves in the foot.

FYI, I'm not sure if "afterthought" was actually the rep's wording. I better remember him talking about how emphasis was always placed on the Japanese version, and the inclusion of the dub was more like a "bonus."

Surprised it was an afterthought.
Very interesting.
I'm really tempted to get the DBox, the only thing I'm torn on is the fact that I'm not a big dvd person in general. I just don't buy dvds that often (despite having lots of shows I watch on TV which have boxsets available) and I even less often whip out one to watch.
Infact, most of the db/z dvds I've bought were bought during that period of time when I got my very first part-time job and suddenly had my own income.
I re-read books I've bought often though, which is one of the reasons why I embarked on slowly purchasing all the kanzenban volumes.
At least I still have another month to decide.
EDIT: Oh! And about their online Q&A; I knew they were going to have one, but for the life of me I couldn't find a link to watch it when it was going on live. Searched the whole website around 5pm when it was supposed to have started and couldn't find exactly where they were airing it.
On hiatus.

The video of the Q&A session has been posted on YouTube.
Part 1 |
Part 2
The tidbit about the DragonBox, and as such the only point of interest for Daizexers, in in the first part, about 17 minutes in.

So if I buy the DragonBox and switch over to the English track....will it just not show the next episode previews or just do them in Japanese or etc?

I would only have been surprised because it's FUNimation and Dragon Ball. But hey, releasing the Dragon Box at all was a surprise, so...compared to that, I wouldn't have been that surprised at all.
Cardcaptor Sakura was also released entirely on DVD, sub only. Magical Project S was in the old days as well. We also got the new Evangelion movie here sub only before it was released in the US.

So is this sort of like the DBox news HQ?
Anyways, on the
Funimation Dragonball Z official website there's a promo video (which plays automatically upon entering the page, you can't miss it) with Chris Sabat narrating it as Vegeta where he can be quoted as saying, "Hey there freaks!" and the always classic, "the Dragon Box's power is over 9000!".
I know it's not really a big deal, but just when you thought they were doing it right with Dragonball...

That trailer's what announced the news man. It's only just been put on the site though I think.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Isn't that an old promo? I'm pretty sure I've seen it. I think it's tongue-in-cheek, though.
I don't see the huge deal about episode previews. Those always give away way too much, especially in DBZ.

I suppose... it might play the subtitled version? I guess we'll have to wait and find out.

I'm more of a Dub fan, as I do not speak Japanese but I am going to buy the DragonBoxes and maybe they will open me up more to the JP music.
I'm really interested in seeing the books that come with them as well.
How tall are the boxes again?

As primarily a dub fan who has seen more or less than 60% of the show in Japanese in bits and pieces... I'm going to make the decision right now... I will not watch the Dragon Box with the dub. I'm going to watch the whole show in Japanese from start to finish and I'm real excited about it. I've been breaking down my aversion to subs in preparation by watching some other animes in Japanese. I'm currently watching Gantz and I VASTLY prefer the Japanese voices for that show. Though having to keep my eyes on the TV for fear of missing important dialog is still annoying as ever.
I'll always stick to dubs by default, mostly because I totally despise the attitude of some sub only elitists. After all, part of what makes you a fanboy is
how much you hate something else. But I'll definitely be more open to switching over in the future if I feel like a dub isn't competent.

I know Kaboom posted the links already, but for anyone that wants to jump straight to the Dragon Box part, here's a link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrGE1iriLYk#t=16m51s
Also, Adam Sheehan makes it sound like they took the DVD menus from the Japanese Dragon Boxes and just translated them into English. I wonder what he means by that, because I don't think that'll quite work since there are going to be more episodes per disc. Also, I'm assuming, based him saying they didn't dub the next episode previews, that besides adding subtitles and a dub track, they didn't do anything else like translate title cards or credits.
"Super-duper hardcore fans!" Nice.

OK, so let me get this straight...
- The menus were taken directly from the original Dragon Box, and were translated into English.
- When you insert the DVD into your player, it has the Japanese version at the start.
It's like the English version of the Dragon Box!
I have a plan for my Season Sets. Box them away until I need money because when these DBox sets come into my home, they will be banished.

(And the single DVDs have the Faulconer music, so good on that!)
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!
Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^
