I just had to point out how funny I think some people are towards the Goku vs. Freeza fight. Many forget of the fact that since Toriyama intended to end everything there, it only made sense that the battle was so long.

If it were the final battle for every manga ever, and manga itself would stop being produced in Japan forever after that battle... it would still be too long.

Eh, it doesn't bother me. As I said, it was all intended to end there, as well as the fact that the battle between those two was so long waited for, it just made sense. Sure, it seems a bit much when watching it now, but I don't let it bother me.

Ur, while I don't let it bother me and I don't want to be annoying... :P
When Goku joined the fight is around the time I stopped caring.
I don't really feel like the Namek arc was leading to Goku Vs. Freeza until Goku went to the healing chamber. I mean, it was ... extremely obvious if I'd bothered to think about it... but somehow every time a random new fight jumped into the storyline on Namek, it made things less interesting for me.
Like, I was fine with Cui/Qui/Kui/Kewi/Kiwi, Dodoria and Zarbon. The Ginyu Force/Tokusentai/Special Corps/Special Squad/Taskforce/"Milk rangers" kinda went "meh" until they became Goku's demo dummies, and Ginyu himself, despite having a unique and ligitamently useful technique, didn't capture my interest so much until he became a frog.

Eh, I guess multi-episode fights that only come on once a day that don't change anything at all from the way it was last week... *ahem*

Arg... It always annoys me to hear people say Toriyama intended to end it with Freeza, despite how reasonable it may be.

I've thought the same thing since the first time I read the scanlations on PN back in the old days when DB was just a small twinkle on the horizon of possibility here in the states-

Son Goku vs Ma Juniaa during the 23rd Budokai.

There's a reason so many people have been listing it (which fills me with joy ^^), and that's because it's really the last hurrah of real hand-to-hand fighting before ki battles start to take over with Z- it's heavy and it's brutal and the art is absolutely fantastic in both the anime and the manga. I love the characters involved, I love the twists and turns, I love the height of the emotions and the absolutely wicked grins the young Piccolo gives, the cocky little bastard. But he's not just cocky, he's smart, and both of them are so equally matched. The danger is so real but Son just insists on following the rules despite how crazy it makes everybody else. And there's a foot kamehameha. It's awesome.

I'm not as sure about movies or other specifics like that, but I do have a favorite beam struggle, and that's the first big one in my memory- Son Goku vs Vegeta, kamehameha vs gallit gun raging on the scorched earth in wild colors- even the repeating wall of rocks looks good. This thing has me on the edge of my seat every single time.

Because nearly everyone who says it does so because they've read or heard about that fake interview where Toriyama said he wanted to end it there. Getting annoyed by it is just an e-reflex that I've developed.

My favorite?

Of course, the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. The whole tournament is entertaining, creative, fun, brutal, well-paced, well-written (especially for a fighting manga), and many characters get a chance to shine in ways they would never get to do again. (Kami, Tenshinhan, Chichi, etc...)

Runners-up include:

2) Everyone vs. Vegeta (Saiyan arc)
3) Goku/Vegeta/Mr. Satan/Fat Boo vs. Kid Boo (end of Majin Boo arc)
4) Goku vs. Freeza (Namek arc)
5) Gohan vs. Cell (Cell Games arc)
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Yeah. Like I say though, it's not an unreasonable suggestion. It easily possible that all of the 4 major arc were planned to be the end of the series at some point.

Even though it stems from a fake interview I find it fit that the Dragon Ball series would end there since there are no loose ends left.

For the anime, it's the entire "Saiyan Pride" disc. Three episodes of pure fight with nary any pauses. SSJ2 and then SSJ3 Goku vs. Kid Boo ftw (with SSJ2 Vegeta thrown in for good measure).

Since the question is what was the best fight in the series and not my favorite fight, I'm going to have to toss my basis for moment and actually think about this. The best fight in the entire was Goku vs Jackie Chun (Roshi) and Goku vs. Freeza. I'm judging the fights by the hype and not the actual match up.

It seems that a lot of people are adding the fight between Goku and Kid Buu on their list and I can't fathom why. That fight, compared to the others before it, was pretty lame. Don't get me wrong here the fight itself in the anime was well animated and action packed. It was just the build up to the fight that drained me and by the time it happened, I really couldn't care less.

It was like the Water 7 Arc in One Piece. CP9 was hyped up to be a group of badass agents that were not force to fucked with it. I patiently waited for Luffy and his crew to final catch up to CP9 and duke it out. And I waited, and waited, and waited! And when something actually happened, my brain is so numb from watching all the pointless bullshit, I couldn't care anymore about the battle.

Well, to be fair, One Piece is more about the plot, adventures, and characters than it really is the fighting...

...although Luffy's two fights at Enies Lobby still kicked ass.

Really? I loved the whole of Water 7 and Enies Lobby. During Water 7 I was concentrating more on Usopp and Franky than looking forward to a fight. And then the whole of Enies Lobby was a massive treat because it was just completely awesome and I wasn't really bothered about what the fights were like.

It was the same with DB really. Maybe because I knew so much about it, from games and half watching the anime and so forth, before I actually got read it properly, but I was never reading on in anticipation of a great fight. The bits I really relished, and that stood out to me, were the character moments.

That's part of why I liked Vegeta vs Reacoom. Vegeta had to actually try from the start, and I liked the change in his attitude. Usually Vegeta's just an ass when he's fighting, because always goes into it expecting to humiliate his opponent. So when he's winning he's just a jerk about it, and when he's losing he's in disbelief about it. But he went into his fight with Reacoom knowing he had to give it everything he had or he'd get crushed.

Now, now then, not so hasty. The battles themselves were well designed and entertaining. On topic: My favorite fight would be either Goku and Piccolo (Jr) or Goku vs Vegeta.

No one's mentioned Kuririn vs. Piccolo in the 23rd Budokai Tenkaichi (I think it was). It was so fantastic, seeing how far Kuririn advanced in his training, even learning how to fly. And Roshi's comments at the end of his fight, touching.

Goku vs. Ma Junior (Piccolo) (23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai) and Goku vs. Sayain saga Vegeta are my two main favorites.

All of Krillin's fights in the tournaments were great, because he was always had to be clever to make up for being weaker.
