The best response to that I can think of would have to be an analogy...
Console gaming is like... building an awesome jungle gym in your backyard. For a few days, it's like you've brought an amusement park home with you. Sure it's... obscenely expensive... but hey, it's like having your OWN amusement park! It's yours!
A few weeks later though, no one's coming over just for your new swing set. You don't care. Yeah, it's... still there, yours, whenever you want it but... eh, been there, done that...
An MMO is more like having a month-long pass to an actual amusement park. Sure, it's not yours... and after that month is up, you need to pay for admission again... but hell, this place is awesome. Tons of people. Constantly being taken care of. They build new rides every few weeks, fix up the old ones to make them more entertaining... I may have to keep paying for admission, but it sure as hell beats having to buy and build a new jungle gym every other week.
The downside is, if you're gone awhile, you'll feel like you're missing all the fun... But hey, that's an MMO/amusement park.
That's my perspective on the matter, anyway. Cheaper to pay a little every month for a great game that's being constantly updated and maintained than pay a hefty price on a game that'll lose most of it's momentum after a week...

Weirdest analogy ever... yet very true.
You're out of your mind if you honest think a free MMO is gonna be good (ok there's Guild Wars but shutupI'mtryingtomakeapointhere). Seriously though, Guild Wars is a free MMO, you sign up and you play.. but once you're done, that's it. The game is never updated, because there's no monthly fee, it'd be a waste of money to fund a product with no income.
The fee is never that much anyway, for a game that constantly being updated with relyable and dedicated servers hosting tens of thousands of players. Of course there's going to be something of a monthly fee, servers and updates don't fund themselves. If this was free, I'd be disapointed, because 99% of free MMOs are pityful (<3 Guild Wars, even if you have no replay value).

The difference is that new content is usually supplied to MMORPGs on a monthly basis, there's a ton of customer service, and server costs to account for.Velasa wrote:But you can play those normal games as much as you want until the end of time. These online games... you want to play the thing you already bought and paid for? Every single time you pick it back up, and every 30 days you need to re-pay for the game over and over again in little pieces. So the real cost of the game is hidden... because you never stop paying for this thing you supposedly bought years ago.
I've been playing WoW off and on for almost five years, and the game is almost nothing like it was when it first came out. Something new comes out pretty much on a monthly basis, and major content patches come in about every three, which add new areas, quests, storylines, etc..
Besides, free to play MMOs tend to suck. They have shoddy customer service, lack GMs and moderation, are overrun with spammers and gold sellers, and all of the best features require fees, which add up to much more than a $15 monthly fee.
You know this is Akira Toriyama's project, right? He's supervising all aspects of the game's development.LeprikanGT wrote:gah this game is messing up the Db universe so bad. I'm glad its some side project for online rather than an actual 'game'.
If saiyans are dead at this point there should be no oozarus and no super saiyans. If just ANYONE can become one theres no real point in having them exist anymore.
It's being developed as a direct continuation of the Dragon Ball manga, ignoring the anime altogether. Hence the four-fingered Namekians, the manga-style SFX, etc..
I think I have some new screenshots? I hope so anyway... =P

Based on what you guys are saying, it looks like I won't be buying any game titles for quite a while after DBO's release
I'm also wondering if we'll get to play through the Freeza, Cell, and Buu arcs ala Time Travel Quests. So far we've been shown just a good amount of the original Dragon Ball arcs and the Saiyan arc.

Awesome screenshots.
That Muuri one is really...weird.
And would be Piccolo and Dende be alive when this game takes place?

Perhaps they will become available later with patches or an expansion.Sebastian (SB) wrote:Based on what you guys are saying, it looks like I won't be buying any game titles for quite a while after DBO's releaseI'm also wondering if we'll get to play through the Freeza, Cell, and Buu arcs ala Time Travel Quests. That's exactly what I was thinking too. The later arcs will be available as expansion packs. And, hopefully, some more new story material (besides the one we're already getting) for the expansion packs as well.

.. But if the game is over in a week and you never want to play it again... that's what I would refer to as a bad game o_O I was more talking about good games, the kind you'll let sit for a bit and then go back and play all over again. I've got stuff I've been playing over and over for years and still enjoy.MisterFlashdude wrote: That's my perspective on the matter, anyway. I get what you mean, but... it's still no comparison. I think the most time I've spent on one game in total is... 80-some hours in total...Velasa wrote:.. The time I've spent on just one of my characters in WoW?

Ah OK, I must have missed that. Thanks. Though that makes me wonder why skin color would be retained when a majin transforms into this "pure" form, while none of their other unique characteristics are retained.Bura wrote:Well, you can choose skincolor when you pick Majin, so this is probably a transformed fat white Majin type of guy.
Oh, and I wonder if majin in the game can absorb other players?

I.... highly doubt that. It would be incredibly unbalanced. I mean, think of level one majjin players sneak absorbing a level 100 namekian player.
Not good dude. We are talking revenge of the noobs here. X100.

You've got a point there. Maybe when they absorb them, they can just take their appearance, but without any strength or defense boost. They could just take the players signature moves or something. You know, similar to Kirby.IncompetentOverlord wrote:I.... highly doubt that. It would be incredibly unbalanced. I mean, think of level one majjin players sneak absorbing a level 100 namekian player.

Yeah, that could work. It would have to be limited to one or two techniques/appearances though. Otherwise, we have the same problem, with low level players lording over their peers with Super Kamehameha when they should be using things like Muten Roshi's lullaby attack.Shiyonasan wrote:You've got a point there. I had 201 hours on my original Pokemon Red file before someone accidentally deleted it on me. And I've completely lost track of how long I've played my main file on Morrowind in the last six years but it's much more than that. Neither of those games cost me more than $30, just as quick examples. I still really can't stomach the idea of endlessly paying for something I already purchased.

Buying a modem doesn't give you free internet, buying a cable box doesn't get you free TV channels and buying an MMO doesn't get you free access to the servers. That's just how these services work.Velasa wrote:I still really can't stomach the idea of endlessly paying for something I already purchased.

Looks like the graphic isn't that awesome to make hardware burning.....
I think that this DB cell shade looks a lot better on PS2 then what I see on this screens......
+ I will import this game, like idiot, with shipping cost half of the game's cost which is ''only'' MMORPG without some single player and I doubt it'll be as near as awesome gameplay the Old Republic will be (Bioware..... pointless to make argument about it) + monthly payment???
Shame on me!! Shame on me!! But in that case I'm definitely going to hack it with some crackoz.....
