I know. They said 17 movies and 4 TV specials, instead of 17 movies, 3 TV specials and the Jump special, so I'm guessing they mean the Jump Special is the fourth TV special.
Yes, that is what I meant. I figured the average reader of the newspaper would not have knowledge of Shonen Jump and that the fans would understand the statement anyway.
True, but calling it a TV special is intentional misinformation, which is THE big no-no in news reporting. You should have refered to it as an "Anniversary Special," since that's exactly what it was.

It's really not that big of a deal.

Um... I guess if you ignore the fact that it really, really is, I suppose you're right? :?

Errors lead to retractions. The need to post a retraction can get you in deep shit with your editors, if not fired. Intentional misinformation means you consciously chose to make the error. That goes against newswriting ethics and is even worse than making a genuine error. Lying in newswriting can end careers.

If he was uncomfortable explaining the Jump Anniversary (which would have given weight to DBs success, IMO), he could have just left it as "17 movies, 3 TV Specials, and an anniversary special" or simply "many movies and specials." The point is, there were MANY alternative options, all of which would have made for better writing in this particular article. Instead, he broke the cardinal rule of newswriting simply because it's easier.

Yes, but. Who cares? The editors don't care, the readers don't care, and neither does he. I have some experience in amateur journalism, I know the rules. I would have done it differently, but honestly, it doesn't matter. It's not worth making a big stink about.

I'm not. I was responding to you leaving a single statement reply to my critique that served only to put heavy emphasis on how lying in newswriting is acceptable.

And if you still think nobody cares, let alone the readers, please note that you just accused a reader of "making a bit stink about it." :P

I made my intial post for two reasons. He joined the discussion to let us know he wrote the article, so I'm giving him some damn important feedback. 1) If you're going into journalism, don't friggin' lie! You'll REALLY regret it down the road. 2) He had various means of writing it better. Not just better in regards to honesty, but better in getting his point across. DB is impressive because there are A, B, and C. If he doesn't want to go to the trouble of explaining what C is, he doesn't have to (just because you or I would, doesn't mean he should). But state that C exists, since it further prooves your point. If you really want to go that lazy and ignore C, just state A and B, don't lie.

The Truth

Thank you for the advice. You're right that telling the truth in journalism is important. Truth is the first guiding principle of my life and if I didn't completely live up to that then I need to look inward and see how I can do better.

The article was already extremely long, and if I had mentioned Shonen Jump it would have added even extra length to qualify it. Unfortunately the idea of saying "Anniversary Special" did not occur to me.

Perhaps I'm ignorant of what it really is. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Anniversary Special also air on television at some point? That was my guiding understanding and I really didn't spend too much time thinking about how to classify it. Saying it was a TV special seemed to make sense, and it seemed like the truth.

Your point is well taken. I'll try to make an adjustment to the online article. Thanks again.

I could answer that for ya Derek. There's usually the "Jump Super Anime Tour" that goes around in Japan yearly to show familar characters from various Jump/Shueisha works in animated form. For 2008, the short Dragon Ball flick was shown around the tour. After the tour was over, Shueisha offered the short to be shown in online streams with English subs at Jumpland, along with other works. There was never a television broadcast for it.

Ah, yes, correct. I guess what happened is that my memory of the streaming broadcast made me think it had also aired on TV in Japan. But you've clarified the issue and now I have a solid understanding.

Thank you, Sebastian.

Online Dragon Ball Museum Article

Post by DerekPadula » Wed Oct 28, 2009 1:49 am

Hi everybody,

The online article has now been published on The Epoch Times website, with the correction about the anniversary special.

I also posted an article on my blog with the full interview questions and answers, in case you'd like to know more about the Dragon Ball Museum.

:D Thank you, Derek! (Sorry that people went off on your article for a while there, but now back to the subject at hand...) I was glad to see a couple photos of the collection on the article. The pictures make it look like Mike Nilsen's collection has a lot of newer collectibles, but I'm curious as to whether he has any older, rare toys or items of "historical" significance.
Well anyway, I sure hope this museum really gets off the ground. It would be so overwhelming to see so much DragonBall stuff all in one massive collection. I would not be able to contain my fanboy giddyness  . If it were to have a successful tour and then establish a permanent residence, I think it would mark an important event in DragonBall history. Hopefully it will draw old fans and new fans alike from all over the world for generations to come.
Come on, people, we should be uber excited about this prospect!
