I popped these bad boys in for ya, and yes, they do work on a PS2 slim. I personally think they look a little better on a stand-alone DVD player, but if the PS2 slim is all they have, then it should be good enough.
Thank you sooooooo much. While I do strongly recommend that he invest in some sort of conventional player, I'd hoped to be certain that the discs would play at all in what he has before telling him to put the money into this release.

Hence why I put my question out there in the first place. I don't know what devices you're specifically referring to, but I know that the PS2 can be finicky about what it wants to play.

Can someone PM me when a proper JP/US Dragonbox comparison has been compiled?

I'm not diving through the 40-ish pages I haven't been keeping tabs on. The point of topic is changing every 5 or so posts. This is ridiculous.
Well, yeah. What you're looking for is a review. Why are you following a discussion thread when you're looking for a static review...?

Needless to say, all the regular parties are working on stuff.

My Dragon Box got shipped out on the 6th of November from AxelMusic, and I'm still waiting for it! Hopefully it will be here tomorrow.
Did it turn up today?
Nope, and I'm starting to get annoyed now . I just sent AxelMusic an e-mail asking them what's going on.

Mine arrived from Target yesterday, and my dad just dropped it off for me. I watched the second episode to get a feel for it (I'm going to plow through the whole thing over the next week or so as I make flash cards for studying for my upcoming finals).

Just a couple of thoughts:

Wow. This thing is fucking brilliant. It's the best Dragonball Z product we've ever gotten. Everything from the quality of the box (the same outer box used on the James Bond collections a few years back) to the quality of the book and disc holder is incredible. I don't really have any gripes about the Japanese version, and I like the fact that the proper opening and closing are used.

I, however, am a dub fan, so let me speak as a dub fan for a moment. What we have here is the dub that we already got on the Season Sets. I was really hoping for a bit of a redub, at least of a few lines, but as we have known for a while, the dub was really just tacked on, so not much effort went into it. If you like Nathan Johnson's or Bruce Faulconer's scores, they are, of course, not present. Seasons 1 and 2 have pretty good dubs, with the Namek episodes being a real highlight. I'm not holding my breath about them getting Sean and Linda back in the recording studio to fix the Freeza arc, and this is a potential problem for what will probably be sets 2-4 (Freeza, Androids, and pre-Cell Games Cell). The original voices simply worked better with the dub music than they do with the Japanese score, which tends to convey different emotions.

Mild ambivalence aside, older dub fans should definitely get this set. Besides the video games' dubs, this is probably the best we're going to get in terms of a dub for the show, and this release should certainly be supported to show Funimation that older fans support quality releases of this nature.

Bottom line, not that it needs to be said, pick up a copy of the Dragonbox. It'll probably have a relatively limited run in America, and you can take heed that you own a wonderful release like this. I imagine that besides hardcore fans, these boxes won't sell very well, so I would anticipate limited production numbers for them. Get a copy, sit back, and watch Dragon Ball Z the way it actually (really) was meant to be seen.

Nope, and I'm starting to get annoyd now . I just sent AxelMusic an e-mail asking them what's going on.
I reckon it'll turn up within the next few days. I ordered mine on the 7th: if they're only counting weekdays as "working days", tomorrow would make it the maximum nine days.

I actually hoped to get this last weekend. Bollocks to that, I guess!

On a related-yet-different note, I'm wondering, all of a sudden, if the removal of R2 coding on the discs is a foretaste of good news for UK DBZ fans: could the set see release here? The mind boggles...

I really hope it does arrive tomorrow, I'll be so happy! It's strange because I'm still waiting for Dragonball Season 1 and GT Season 1 which I ordered two weeks ago.

Yup! I think my first time ever seeing the show in Japanese must've been through that extra on Pioneer's DVD. Only Dead Zone has any cool extras like that, but even one movie is better than none.

I have to say I'm pretty darn excited for your podcast review and written review. I assume you will be putting up proper comparisons on the home page with the review. That would be sweet.

Nope, I ordered them from Amazon.co.uk. I'm used to the wait with Amazon though.

What's the benefit of preordering online? Is there any advantage over just going to the store on the release date?

Preorder at RightStuf and all FUNimation products will come a week or two in advance of the street date (at one point some of us got the first One Piece box set a month in advance).

You will also typically get a discounted price. MSRP is ~$80. Best Buy in-store price at release is ~$70. Amazon and RightStuf pre-order prices were ~$50.

Yeah, RS has the Box on sale for circa $47 right now (and the One Piece sets are typically circa $37).

My box arrived from Amazon a few hours ago! :D

But one back corner of the box is a little smushed. :(

But everything else looks fantastic! :D

I have work in less than an hour though, so I probably won't get a chance to start watching til I get home...
The book is amazing though! I only got a chance to glance at it so far, but there's refreshing accuracy (Kuririn! Seiyuu being named!) in it. X3

Gonna have an actual review tomorrow. :3
