Dragon Ball Kai coloring book

Post by SHINOBI-03 » Wed Nov 18, 2009 3:41 am

I was in Kinokonya yesterday to pick some new manga volumes.

I picked Black Cat vol. 4, Gintama vol. 4, Pokemon re-release vol. 1, REBORN vol. 1, HXH vol. 1 and Japanese Bakuman vol. 5.

And as a habit in me, I checked out the stationary section in the shop, and there, I saw this book surrounded by other Pokemon books.

At first, I thought it's just a note book, but surprised to see it's a coloring book! I just had to buy it. ((Sadly, I had to give up HXH vol. 1 since I didn't have enough money))

So, here are some pictures: ((I havn't scan everything because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to scan and post the whole thing))

The coloring pages are 32 pages, and covers till the appearance of the Geniyu Force.

One thing I noticed, is they don't use Kanji! Even with Goku's and Gohan's names which usually written in Kanji, it's written in Hiragana.

It's really for kids, huh.

EDIT: Fixed the links.

It's strange not seeing their names in kanji.

Well the names probably aren't written in kanji because it's a coloring book for kids, that probably don't know too much kanji. However, they most likely know their hiragana and katakana. That said, there is some stuff written in kanji, so I may be way off in saying all that. :?

Chuquita, how'd you color that so amazing-like?

I've been using just the bucket tool in Photoshop cs2 for the hell of it. I'm a total Photoshop noob, since I got my copy from a teacher who never got to teach an art class, seeing as I was the only one who signed up.

So yeah, any pointers?

They are in katakana also in comic books (yeah, written next to kanji) because of children reading it..... It's cool for me since I don' know kanji

I have to ask... what does a the crayon tool do? :)

Yeah... so... somewhy Coloringbook Piracy isn't what I was expecting. ^_^
This reminds me of how I recall no age where I got into coloringbooks... outlines have never been my thing. Even when I tried to be detailed with faces and such... I'd usually fill it in before adding the details. Which is probably related to why I was always better at scenery than characters... which makes me think about how of all the Spider-man Cartoons I made that had nothing at all to do with spider-man, DB-related things were among those that couldn't use the built-in animated characters as actors. Well... and I never used the tracings in Spidercm... I think I just rambled in a circle, enabling me to both end and send this post. ... should I keep that "End and send" as a catchphrase? :-/

Aw, happy you like it! :3

I use Photoshop Elements 5.0, but cs2 should have the same tools. Once you've got the page you want to color opened up in Photoshop:
-Make a duplicate layer of the page and delete the original, locked layer.
-Change the opacity of the duplicate!new page's layer to around 50% or so.
-Create a layer beneath that and use the paintbucket to make that new, lower layer white.
-Create a layer overtop of those two. This will be the inking layer.
-Using the paintbrush (I used the soft 3 point here, but you could use 2 or 4 if you want it thicker or thinner than that) outline the image.
-Either hide or delete the duplicate 50% layer.

There should now be two layers left active: the one you traced over the piece with, and the white background layer.

You can now pick and choose to create however many additional layers you wish to use to color with. I used one layer for each color, but shared others.
For example: Goku and Gohan's haircolor is on the same layer. Their skintone is also on the same layer. But each color of clothing has its own individual layer. The orange gi and the blue undershirt are each on different layers.

All of the new layers you create to color in hair, skin, and clothing should be under the traced layer and above the white background layer.

I hope I was able to help. :3

Y'know how you have the normal "brush" and then you have the spraypaint "brush?" It's like that, except it looks like you're coloring with a crayon. I actually used it recently. Take a look:

Wouldn't it make more sense to just use furigana? That way the kids could get used to the kanji faster. :?

The sixth one is a crayon. The second-to-last is a colored pencil.

Wait, so you went and traced the whole picture over? Did you use the mouse?

I can see doing that with a Tablet PC... which I'm actually on. But I have no pen. So I can't. Also, that leaves me with a touchpad, which for doing anything drawing-wise, is next to impossible for me lol.

Well, I wanted to take a break from writing this afternoon, so I decided to take a stab at coloring in some of the pages. I chose the two that feature Raditz, which I later regretted because of all the damn hair! Anyway, I really wanted to do the Ginyu Tokusentai one too, but I don't have the time at the moment (doing some DBox stuff)... maybe later. So, here they are:
