VegettoEX wrote:The Japanese have rarely cared about matching lip flaps so meticulously. It's more about the general matching of feeling, emotion, and tone (carried through in the performance) than anything else. There are a few cases where they've animated to the acting (Akira), but these over-the-top examples are far and few between.

... which is a huge difference from the American way of dubbing anime, of course, where there are countless re-writes, re-takes, and digital manipulation of the performances to try and match the lip flaps.
You say it like it's a bad thing. I for one appreciate the extra effort the Americans take toward matching lip flaps. It's especially impressive when the "feeling, emotion, and tone" are all done 100% as well. FUNimation is particularly good about this. Almost all of their dubs are great when it comes to performance and accuracy (with the exception of their comedies which almost always have rewrites), and when it all fits well with lip flaps, well it just makes for a seamless viewing experience.

Although, having only watched a few shows in Japanese, I really haven't noticed a lot of lip flap. It doesn't really seem like a really bad problem. Then again I'm focusing on the subtitles for the majority of the time anyway.

I generally agree with you when it comes to American productions in which the animation is done to match the voices. But since they end up re-writing the translated script to fit the number of mouth flaps, the whole thing is suspect. Speaking patterns and the words a character would use are more determined by how many flaps they have to convey a message, rather than any form of writing. And while matching the animation may be nice in an original production, when you are dubbing something that didn't care that much about mouth flaps when THEY made it while also having a drastically different language and speaking style? It's just a fairly destructive form of OCD.

If that's the case, can you name one property that was crippled by mouthflap-fitting? I really don't think it's OCD-"OMG-WE-GOTTA-FILL-EVERY-FLAP-NO-MATTER-WHAT" so much as striking a balance between fitting mouth movements with suitable writing. It's hard work, almost puzzle like, but I'm sure they do their very best. It actually sounds like a lot of fun.

There's a few scenes in Japanese where the lip flap felt off or completely awkward.

There's a few examples in the Freeza saga, but one of the most notorious is in movie 7 and Piccolo trying to kick the crap out of Super 13 and he's going "tah! tah! tah! tah! tah!" with his mouth completely closed.

Ask for a new one. However, if you're impatient:

If you're shipping from AxelMusic I assume you live in the Netherlands? (I could be way off though, if so: sorry for the useless advice.) I know a chain of game stores around those parts, Game Mania, who have a service of removing scratches from a disc. Pretty spiff, but it'll cost you a penny.

Is there anyone who got their Dragon Box from Amazon and having problems with them? This is getting me a little aggravated.

Hmm, I watched a few episodes in English on Disc 1 and I didn't notice any problems with my set. And no problems to note with the Japanese version in general either, I just finished Disc 2 last night.

Hopefully nothing will go wrong with any of the other discs?..... :?

This is the guy showing examples of sync-issues on the Dragon Box. I have no idea if it's just his or it's everybody's, but he really wants someone to check.
About this. Well, the reality is Funimation sometimes screws up. Even on the orange box sets. I know this because I was syncing an English dub up to R2J source. And I do this by lining up the sound effects from the Japanese audio. And then when that's done, I notice that on rare occasions for some episodes, the dub doesn't line up with their mouths. It would be way unacceptable. So I would have to keep moving it back or forward. Until it lines up just like it does on the orange box sets. The only problem to this is, I know the sound effects are going to be almost .500 milliseconds to a second off. To me it's obvious that they didn't line up the sound effects right. And it's going to be one way or another, I rather have it synced to their lips properly. So I know the sound effects are even off on the orange box sets on a select few episodes. But it's hard for a normal person to tell.

By the way, the lip syncing is never going to be perfect. And it will drive you nutz trying to figure it out if it is. I think the Japanese dub, the lips always move 5 to 7 frames before the character starts talking. You wouldn't normally notice something like that. And that's how they made it.

I would have to say the mixing audio engineer for Funimation is just lazy and he is doing a rush job on the sound effects.

Anyone else having issues with the paper peeling on bottom?

Also, the corner on it is pushed in and crushed a little. I'm kind of anal; anyone think I should bother sending it back to Amazon?

Funimation Executive: "Well, we've got everything perfected up to the packaging. How do we decorate it though?"

Yes-Man: "My daughter said we could borrow her glue-stick. Let's just glue some yellow paper on there and call it a day."

That's exactly what I was going to do :P. Kinda sad that to perfect my domestic Dragon Box, I need to toss a little liquid glue in between a tear-away... ^^;;

True that, though to be honest I find the interior cover art more attractive actually. Dark blue > yellow IMO

Well I got in the mail today. The sound is VERY clear as is the picture, I mean yes there is grain, but going by my Japanese Dragon Box Singles it's suppose to be there.

I feel like I'm the only who's followed this entire thread. :?

The peeling label thing was discussed pages ago. :P It happened to me as well. I super glued mine though, and more or less kinda made it worse. It's got some texture to that part now...
