How long was GT intended to be originally?

Post by Blade » Tue Nov 17, 2009 9:02 pm

Sorry if this has been asked and answered a thousand times over, but I've spent a time away from the Dragonball Fandom and indeed this website and am struggling to find a decent answer to the question this topic is titled with.

For some reason I have this idea in my head that originally 100 episodes were ordered from Toei with a view to more, but due to an un-enthusiastic initial reaction and declining viewership they asked for Toei to wrap things up as soon as possible.

Please correct me if wrong or push me in the direction of a correct answer, at least here at Daizenshuu EX Forums I know I will find one. :D

I don't believe that anything like that has been mentioned in any official source.

So I guess they were only planning on going up to 64 episodes, oh well.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

The original plan was actually to make the series shorter than it was. However, with the release of Dragon Ball: Final Bout looming, they decided to extend the series further. Which is interesting, considering they seem to have decided to not include any GT villains except Bebi's Golden Oozaru form in the game.

No no no, it WAS supposed to be longer; like a much longer Super 17 Saga and Pan going Super Saiyan but Toei was rushed to get through the series.

I heard something that they were planning to end on the 40 episode mark after Baby, and rushed through the next two sagas just for more, which seems plausible. Doubt there is any real confirmation though.

What's your source for that?
Dunno where it originally stemmed from, but that's an old rumor that goes back to when GT was just wrapping up in Japan.
Yeah, the story goes that Final Bout was tied in with an extended production of the show.

I'd love a source on that and whatever old Jump had the contest/poll for what characters people wanted in the game. All we really have to go on is something from Wuken's FAQ on the game:
Wuken wrote:It was apparent that the producers and developers behind Dragonball Final Bout were concerned with the presentation of their latest work. They were dead-set on making Dragonball Final Bout a game that would satisfy fans of the video game series, so they circulated a questionnaire across Japan asking fans, "What would make this new video game feel great?" The responses from this questionnaire became the foundation of the gameplay behind Dragonball Final Bout.

Thanks for the answers guys, I guess that while my initial hunch appears to be incorrect there is certainly a grey area around the subject at hand :D

Given the success of the two Dragonball series' it would seem strange for Toei only to want to create a much shorter follow-up, especially given the level of work which was clearly put into re-working many of the character designs and crafting the overall feel of the show (if only similar effort had been put into writing the script!).

After reading Wuken's faq on Final Bout, I now see why the game was terrible.

Thanks for corroborating my comment (or at least strengthening its hearsay), Mike, so I don't have to. 8)

Eh, I don't think a rumor being old and well-known counts for much. There's tons of old rumors that are also totally false.

How long was GT intended to be originally?

There's a triple rhyme in the subject line, that's badass.

I don't remember where I heard it or read it but I also thought it was going to be around 100 episodes.

And 100 episodes is how many cours?
Plus, the idea that they would make more episodes just for a video game, I mean... Heh.

I'd say this is all as old as some of the most outrageous Dragon Ball-related internet BS generated by the English-speaking community. 'Wanna bet the similarities don't stop there?
