In your opinion, has Kai been a success?

I think we're forgetting that, even in the manga, Goku's fight with Freeza was way too long.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

I don't like the cencorship. Just the fact that its there makes it feel like its a kids show, and aimed for a younger audience. Also, there are some Dragon Box scenes that look better than Kai, which shouldn't be the case because Kai was remastered from the Dragon Box. I mean, I'll be the first to admit DBZ was very slow, and they could've made it faster. 3 episodes for 1 attack is not good. But they overdid it, and it goes too fast, and anyone who is familiar with the Z show would agree thats its not terrible, nor bad, but it could've been better, and it could've looked nicer.

To make this post not a total waste, I don't understand why people continually believe that Shonen such as Dragon Ball (ZEE no less), Naruto and One Piece are all "mature and for adults".
It's an irritatingly common misconception and I don't know where it came from... Possibly remnants of those old Dragon Ball Z "Animelabs" subs?

The fights with the Saiyans, the fights on Namek, Dodoria blowing up a child, Vegeta slaughtering a village, the fight with Freeza (bonus points for spearing Krillin, then blowing him up), etc. etc. etc. That shit wouldn't fly in American kid's cartoons.Metalwario64 wrote:It's an irritatingly common misconception and I don't know where it came from... It probably doesn't help that some of the super-childish moments (like the one I cited in my last post) that counter-balance the violence were cut out of the initial American broadcast, either.Rocketman wrote:The fights with the Saiyans, the fights on Namek, Dodoria blowing up a child, Vegeta slaughtering a village, the fight with Freeza (bonus points for spearing Krillin, then blowing him up), etc. etc. etc. That shit wouldn't fly in American kid's cartoons.Metalwario64 wrote:It's an irritatingly common misconception and I don't know where it came from... I'm still enjoying Kai. I don't keep up with it every week, but it's cool to spend a day catching up and seeing how much they've covered since the last time I watched. Recently I started getting into it more during the Ginyu battles but I'll probably go back to keeping tabs on it and catching up every now and then.
It is something I'll consider buying if FUNi releases the BDs here. Holding out that it will get a good dub and kind of excited at the thought of watching a DB dub that isn't trying to bullshit me the whole time.

He must be reading the same manga as me, because that thing really does go on for fucking ever even in the manga. It's not nearly as bad as in the anime, but still.Duo wrote:Have we been reading the same Manga? It never really got that boring to me. The part of the fight prior to Goku transforming keeps itself interesting, and the part after is so interspersed with everything else going on...if you added up all the panels I don't think it would be much longer than Goku's fight against Vegeta.Herms wrote:He must be reading the same manga as me, because that thing really does go on for fucking ever even in the manga. In Japan, Dragon Ball is aimed at a kids audience. In the United States, an old man having an orgasmic nosebleed after seeing a 16-year-old's Va-Jay-Jay and a drill-like blast impaling two people wouldn't be in a kids show.Kendamu wrote:It's not a kids show! The difference is the cultures. In Japan, it is acceptable to feature nudity and violence in a children's show, whereas in America that shit wouldn't fly. So while us mature DB fans are fine with watching nudity and violence in a Japanese kids show, the overprotective American soccer moms will be screaming for censorship and spouting a never-ending supply of bullshit.
So, to conclude, Dragon Ball is a kids show. It was originally intended to be a kids show, deal with it. It's just that Dragon Ball has attracted a much wider audience than children, which is why some of us refuse to accept that it is not a kids' show, but a show for all audiences. I think some people who don't think it's a kids show may be slightly embarrassed or ashamed that they might be watching a kids show and refuse to believe that. Well, if you're thinking that, I can assure you that you tell your non-fan friends (assuming they don't live in Japan) that you're watching a show with tits and blood in it and say it's a kids show, they'll laugh at you.

Well, I'd consider the fight with Vegeta to be quite long too. But that was 15 chapters, while Goku's fight with Freeza was 20. That's almost half a tankoubon's worth of difference.Duo wrote:It never really got that boring to me. Not that isn't some of us who find both those fights extremely entertaining, despite the page count.Herms wrote:Well, I'd consider the fight with Vegeta to be quite long too. I agree 100%. The great thing about dragon ball is that for many reasons, adults seem to love it too. The other day I almost woke up my house laughing at Goku punching Jeice in dragonball Kai ep 31. I thought the timing was perfect and much funnier than the "Z" version.Piccolo Daimao wrote:In Japan, Dragon Ball is aimed at a kids audience. I like how whenever this comes up, "We" are the Mature Right-Thinking People and anyone who doesn't share the same view is a shithead soccer mom who's just wrong for not wanting their child to see child abuse, torture and genocide.Piccolo Daimao wrote:So while us mature DB fans are fine with watching nudity and violence in a Japanese kids show, the overprotective American soccer moms will be screaming for censorship and spouting a never-ending supply of bullshit.

This... wasn't aimed at me, was it? I mean, you did watch the video, right?Piccolo Daimao wrote:In Japan, Dragon Ball is aimed at a kids audience. It was supposed to be a joke.
It's alright I guess. It doesn't feel like it was something made for me... Or the kind of fan I am I guess. I get the feeling this was more of something to get new fans into the fold. And I'm sure it's successful if it's still on the air(and I'm sure it because if it were canceled fans would be making a big deal of it and I'd see the new on the daizex page itself).
But it's not something that really appeals to me. It's just reusing footage from the original Dragon Ball Z. It doesn't diverge from the plot other than just cutting stuff out. It's roughly the same script. Nothing about it really appeals to me. I watched up to when Vegeta and Nappa landed on earth and I got the idea that it was pretty much nothing new. Not that thats a bad thing it's just not something I'm intensely interested it. Especially since I just got done watching all of DBZ via DVD not too long ago.
I'd have definitely been more interested if it were new animation, but that simply isn't the case. That doesn't make it a failure, it just means I'm uninterested.
