How young? I was 10/11/12 when I discovered the show and never thought such a thing... though I did hear some guys saying that Krillin and Goku were "bloodbrothers" (which would enable Krillin to go SSJ... :D ).
I suppose I'll have to ask my ten-year-old cousin, though so far as I recall I never saw any evidence that he believed such a thing (his first impression of Tullece was that he was Bardock?)...

Back in 97-98 when I was first introduced to Dragon Ball Z, I began watching during the episode where Vegeta "sends Dodoria to the Next Dimension."

Well, I had only seen a handful of episodes, and then I was randomly watching the Saiyan Saga episode where it showed Yajirobe hogging food and talking to the reporters, and at first I thought he was Goku but that he got really fat from all of that eating.

Then a reporter said "You know Goku!?" and I said "...oh!"

Ah yes, that reminds me. I used to think everyone with black hair was a Saiyan. Kuririn, Yajirobe, Chichi.....

I thought Goku transformed into Vegeta and Kuririn into Tenshinhan during moments of rage. This is based on nothing but adverts and previews for the show.

I also thought Future Trunks was an alternate dimension Future Gohan disguising himself for the good of the timeline. Or something.

I was convinced Artificial Human 18 would be a major player in later sagas.

I always thought Kuririn with hair was just bad fanart. I was also never sure if short-hair and long-hair Yamucha were in fact the same person.

I assumed Vegetto and Gogeta were two more survivors of planet Vegeta's destruction.

I also thought all references to the character Coola were actually to Cui, making for some fascinating mix-ups.

The first time I caught part of an episode, when I had the flu and was really spacing in and out, I assumed the Ginyu Special Corps were the good guys as all I could remember from the other side was Vegeta (the transformed Goku in my mind) being an asshole.

This isn't one of mine, but my nephew brought his friend over to my house around 2002 or so and his friend really believed in the existence of DBAF. Looking into his eyes, you could tell he REALLY believed in it's existence and it was quite sad.

I wonder how he is now. :P

-I thought that the DBZ movies (although I think I only saw 2 and 3 during my DB-ignorant years) took place during the main storyline and were in fact critical to the overall plot.

-That Dragon Ball was incredibly long. Yes, it is a long series, but for some reason I thought it was up in the 1000+ episodes range or something. When I first started watching DBZ, I was very unfamiliar with anime and was much more used to self-contained episodes types of animated shows, so I guess I thought that in order for such complex plots and back stories to devlop the show would have to be extremely long.

-That Chaozu really was an emperor and that Tenshinhan was his bodyguard. I think a friend told me this one. I'm assuming he got this from reading a summary of the third original Dragon Ball movie.

-That the original Dragon Ball series was nothing more than Goku and Bulma looking for the Dragon Balls. I never bothered to read episode descriptions and just dove right in to downloading Nippon Golden Network's subtitled episodes after hearing about the existence of a mysterious show that actually took place before DBZ.

-That Freeza and Cell were either one in the same or related or something. This memory is a bit hazy.

-That Japanese DBZ was FILLED with profanity. Since I heard that the American version of DBZ was edited from the Japanese version, I just assumed that the original Japanese version was very "hardcore" in terms of blood and swearing. Certain fansubs did not help to disprove my belief.

-That Japanese DBZ looked like crap and was covered in hair. Thanks, International Channel!

Back in 1999, I remember walking through stores like Kmart and Toys R Us and coming across those sets with the little figures in them. On the back of the box, it showed all of the figures that were in the various series of releases. I distinctly remember seeing Meta Cooler and assuming that the "Cooler Saga" had to be approaching after the Garlic episodes that I had seen the preview for.

I also assumed Vegetto was Vegeta's brother, and could picture a saga where Vegeta's brother came to earth to challenge Goku and Vegeta. Little did I know that Vegeta didn't have a brother .... at the time....

I actually ran into someone like that, too. I'm not sure if I really was able to get him to believe the truth. Oh, well.

I thought AF was real for like a day or so, then I found it out it was a fake. I remember one site was giving alway AF on DVD, and the DVD cover had a bunch images slap on into it like if it was made on MS Paint.

Having only seen the Frieza saga of the Funimation dub on Toonami and thinking that Goku and Vegeta were the last Saiyans I would find myself most confused when I went to my local comic book store and saw them selling the old school Bandai Dragonball GT figure imports. Seing so many Super Saiyan figures, such as the child Goku Super Saiyan 3 figure (which to me looked nothing like any Goku I knew) made me think that in Dragonball GT the Saiyan race was resurrected somehow.

I thought everyone would become a kid in GT not just Goku, and Pan was really Videl as a kid.

I thought the "Great Saiyaman" was some kind of resurrected old Saiyan wise man who came to Earth to offer Gohan guidance for becoming the leader of a new Saiyan race. Or something.

For the most part I didn't let details about the story to come get warped in my mind, but that was pretty...out there.

Really, just that the was FUNi dubbed it was a representation of the actual quality of the show. Which is why I could barely stomach it when I first saw the Namek/Freeza episodes on cartoon network with the obnoxious music and annoying grunts. Thank god for fansubs and a friend who got the international channel at his house. 8)

To the extent that in the first fanfiction I made, when having the OCs talking about the strength of the previous villain (that was invented just so they could have access to a scouter), I had Krillin arrive and say somewhat dismissively, "I mean, even Vegeta was stronger than <villainname>.".
I thought this too. I thought Vegeta was just a sub-boss. I never thought he would be a main character or popular at all.

For a short time I thought Oob and Tapion were the same person and Toei just got inconsistent with the inks.

I assumed Garlic Jr. was Pilaf out of revenge and that "The Spice Boys" were the actual names for his cronies.

I thought based on web-perusing around 1995 that Mister Satan was actually strong.

I also thought that the Z fighters were actually a unified fighting team named the Earth's Special Forces. Thanks, early dub. I also figured Yajerobi was a martial arts coach, just not for the heroes.

I thought the characters' Super Saiyan forms were separate from their normal forms... Like, they upgraded into a whole new person or something. Idk.

I thought Garlic Jr. and Emperor Pilaf were twin brothers. The dub really hammered this belief in with the fact that they had the same voice.

I thought (and I'm serious about this) that Goku's eyebrows when he went SSJ3 were burned off from some blast. Damn Pojo magazine when I was 9 years old :(.

I used to think Dragon Ball: Final Bout was a good game. And I felt so lucky to have it when I bought it back in 1999.

And I pretty much fell for the whole Dragon Ball AF and SSJ5 Goku thing.

An old friend of mine, who was into DBZ before me, had me thinking that the Piccolo Jr. Arc in DB was part of the "Dragon Ball A" series. I'm serious. He swore there was a Dragon Ball A. And I believed him too.

Ah yes, I can confess to this also. Back in 2001 I yearned for a Dragonball Z video game with good graphics, so being the intrepid little fan-boy I was, I used to hop around the internet downloading the various Dragonball-based NES, SNES, GB and Megadrive roms - but was truely transfixed when I saw screenshots from the much fabled "Final Bout".

Back then the game was well and truely out of print in English markets, and second-hand copies of the USA release would sell for hundreds of dollars on Ebay. Eventually I actually imported all three of the Playstation Games from Japan, and was massively dissapointed with Final Bout and Ultimate Battle 22. Legends still remains probably my favourite Dragonball-based game released thus far, though.

It was a bit of a kick in the nuts to find that a few years later Final Bout and Ultimate Battle 22 would be released in English in the UK but Legends, clearly the superior of the three games, never saw an English release. I guess graphically it just wasn't aesthetically pleasing enough.

I thought that Future Trunks was the Kid Trunks from the present timeline grown-up, and that GT Trunks was just Future Trunks in a different costume.

I believed that Tullece was Goku's twin brother (hasn't everyone?).

I thought that Goku never transformed into a SSJ3 in GT because when I played Final Bout, they had "Little Goku" & "SSJ Little Goku", but no "SSJ3 Little Goku". So, when I saw a picture of SSJ3 Goku on the internet somewhere, I thought that it was a fanart.

Because I didn't know about Dragon Ball, I thought that "Kid Goku" from Ultimate Battle 22 and "Little Goku" from Final Bout (completely ignoring the GT in the title) didn't appear in the series, but they were actual characters that appeared in the DBZ series.

And because of things I had heard from Dragon Ball AF, I believed that Goku had really gotten a female Kaioshin pregnant behind Chi-Chi's back and she gave birth to a super-strong Super Saiyan 5 in the DBZ series.
