Which Dragon Ball release do you recommend?

Post by SHINOBI-03 » Sun Nov 08, 2009 7:04 am

Should I get the new FUNimation's Remastered Boxets?

Or, should I get the two Australian Complete Collection Fatpacks?

Tell the goods and bads about them both to let me decide which one to pick.

It's a bit of a no-brainer in terms of quality, the recent season sets have a nice progressive encode, where as the Australian releases have the standard awful PAL transfer by Madman with some overstuffed discs to boot (10 eps on some of the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai discs).

It's certainly convenient in terms of price and space to nab the Madman sets, but if you're concerned about video quality, go with the season set releases. I personally own the original Madman releases, but I will eventually pick up the season sets if FUNimation don't follow up with a DB Dragonbox.

While I don't own the fatpacks, I can easily tell you the benefits of both.

FUNimation Season Sets:
+5.1 surround sound audio for the dub, which can allow to play around with the audio more since the music and voices are on different tracks.
+Better picture quality as (at least with the opening) I couldn't find a single interlaced shot. It's a very well done progressive encode.
+Better placement of episodes, as some of the discs on the old sets had up to 9/10 episodes a piece, so not only is it smother content wise, it also leads to a better encode of the episodes themselves.

Madman Collection Sets:
+Cheaper overall, as going by the current exchange rate, the Austrailian sets are $60 dollars cheaper.
+Dubbed, although edited, Movie 1
-The framerate converation (30fps to 25fps) means you are going to have a lot of interlaced video and knowing Madman encodings all to well, it's probably going to noticable on a PC.
-The video is taken from the old FUNimation release, which wasn't that good, espically compared to the newer release.

Well, that's the real deal about the fatpacks.
You can own the whole series in two sets only with cheaper price than combining all of the Remastered sets together and saving a lot of shelf space!

But anyway, I know the new sets have single video angle with no next episode previews. Did the Australian releases had them along with two angles?

Wait for the Dragon Box, of course.

I bought the Madman sets because there was nothing else and no hope for there being an English Dragon Box release at all. They're terrible, so I wouldn't recommend them.

And here's the main question: For how long I have to wait to watch a legal version of Dragon ball?

I have ideas for music videos to make, but I don't want to use my bootlaged downloaded rips and get chewed by the forum that taught me to buy the official releases. :x

This may or may not be of concern to you, but the season sets lack Japanese title cards, and the OP/ED have dub credits on them.

And then on the Madman side, one episode of the Baba arc has no subs. Instead, dubtitles come on, as in, the words at the bottom are transcripts of the dub. I believe it is episode 84.

Of course, "Season 3" will be out soon, and we'll find out if that's fixed. Hell, might as well email FUNimation before they go and ship hundreds of botched episode 84's.

(Can I get confirmation it was episode 84, anyone?)

Wha... seriously?!! How come no one said anything about this?!!

Did you watch it from the old singles or the collected edition?

And, is this the same with FUNimation's release?

Madman were made aware of it, cited an error in their authoring process, but stated that no replacements would be issued and it wouldn't be addressed in the future.

And that is one of the many reasons I no longer support Madman.

It should also be noted that this is a problem with the Austrailian release only, since it was part of Madman's authoring process and not FUNimation's.
It's like the UK (and more likely Austrailian since Manga said it came from them) Ouran DVDs, which have none of the extras despite their being listings for them and no subtitle tracks for just the japanese text, which considering the show, is a very bad decision. Madman in general, while getting a lot of shows over there, do have some bad encoding problems.

Also notable that the season sets have been zoomed in much more than the original sets. Not to the point in Z where the AR is changed, butt I would consider what's missing significant. I say wait for the dragonbox.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I agree with this. Goku has no LEGS in the opening animation, and the episodes have been zoomed in more than on the original 2 disc sets. So it really comes down to this...

...go with the Blue Bricks, unless you're willing to wait for a DB Dragon Box that may or may not appear two to three years from now.
"Father, what's Hell like?"
"Well, there's a blue ogre and a red ogre, and we play tag all day." - preview for episode 13

Speaking of Dragon Ball, I’ve got the 2000 release of Saga of Goku followed by the entirety of the 2003 Uncut releases for the remainder of the series… any thoughts on how they compare to the newly Uncut/Remastered 2009 releases? And is there actual plans for D-Ball Dragon Boxes, or is that just hearsay at this point?

Thanks!

Every 2003 set is identical to Madman's collections, only better because... it's not Madman's poorly done PAL conversion.

Damn, if you have all the original releases, don't bother with the Season Sets.

so then is it a common belief that they're of the same quality as the new Season sets? ... and on a similar note, anyone know just how edited are the first 13 episodes that are part of my 2000 Saga of Goku set?

lastly, to whomever it is that edited my original post in this thread... I would kindly ask you not to do so in the future, please.. it just seems a bit creepy and intrusive for you to take the time to edit for such menial means. I'm sorry, but I would hope that the main goal here is on content rather than deliberate pointers on Capitalization or Grammar in general.

as I'm not writing a term-paper, I prefer to not be judged while posting on a message board.. where a community with similar interests have gathered to discuss entertainment.

if that's not the case, then perhaps this forum isn't for me... but if that is the case (as it should be), then feel free to call me out if I ever make any real trouble for anyone... but otherwise, Please Knock Before Entering!

thanks :-)

Well, you should pick up the first set for the first thirteen episodes. But if you've got unzoomed copies of episode 14 through 153, just stick with those.

And there's nothing hard about typing properly, bro. You agreed to do that when you "read" the rules. It's kind of jarring since you seem to have a fairly good grasp of it anyway.

Thanks for the insight, but I think I'll have to do a little more research to see what exactly the differences are between the first 13ep's in relation to what and/or how much was cut out for the 2000 american release... also how much better the quality is in comparison to the remainder of what I have and the newly released 'Remastered' sets...

Thank you, and Granted .. although it's not about it being hard or too tough... as obviously I have a firm grasp of the english language and am aware of how to use it with regards to writing. The issue here in one of Control, and of thwarting off invasive behavior. it's actually rather awkwardly silly ... and seems a bit of an ego-trip to take the time to point out such minor and insignificant things, rather than letting people be themselves (as long as they're also behaving themselves)

If I was standing amongst a group of peers having a conversation, and one of them briefly stopped me to point out a minor point of reference that in no-way changed the meaning of the point I was making... I would tell them to Shove It.

The first 13 episodes that you own are: censored, have the music replaced (BGM, OP, ED, insert songs), have a different set of voice actors (possibly a good thing?), less accurate script (though FUNi's new dub isn't as good as it should be), and part of the first movie is actually edited into the the first episode during the story about the Dragon Balls.

The "season" sets have much better quality video and much better quality English dub audio. The only downside (from the uncut box sets) is that they lack the Japanese episode titles and you're forced to see the English credits over the ending animation.

If Mike is lenient on the grammar rules, then people will think it's okay to write however they want. Being able to understand what people are saying is important on a message board. Sometimes the newbies we get have such bad grammar that it's impossible to understand what they're trying to say. :( Just think of the corrections to your posts as a friendly reminder. But do try to actually write properly (or else you might end up banned).
