The reason I don't like playing it is fucking Dragon Rush or whatever it is. The computer does this on a whim, and although there are patterns in their button presses, they're so hard to stop without losing a chunk of your life. The game essentially just becomes a race to see who can get their Dragon Rush off first and most often.
Well, the gameplay has been given a hell of a lota work compared to the previous installments. Budokai 3 is an amped version of the other 2. They've added numerous features, like Dragon Rush (hate it or like it, personally, I don't think it ruins the game since there are ways to avoid it) Hyper Mode, Teleporting, Persue, Dodging & of course more Ultimate Moves. Now I wouldn't why Budokai 3 wouldn't be more fun than Budokai 2 aside from what you said about the Dragon Rush.

Because I like my fighting games to be about skill, not being able to hit R2 before the other guy?

The Budokai games were never about skill, but capturing the feel & look of the show. The only thing I found annoying about the Dragon Rush was the fact that it was based upon your luck .

Maybe it's because I was raised on Street Fighter and Fatal Fury, but competitive games NEED to be based on skill. Throw away all the flash and glitz; I want a GOOD game.

I'd like to be able to jump into the air and actually walk around in the game in addition to simply being able to just dodge and jump back and forth. Other than that minor thing, I'm enjoying Budoukai 3

I side with Mizugi's concern though, although it's quite nice and according to the series, the dragon rush just seems to be a bit over the top and a means of getting tons of damage in with little skill and a little luck.
Suuure, the Street Fighter series had Gouki/Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu move that would sap 75% of the opponent's health, but that button combo takes some practice before you can dish it out all the time. Plus with a simple dodge or counter-attack your opponent can stop you in your tracks. So in the end it balances each other out.
So if Dragon Rush had a similar button combo, or heck, one similar to the old fatalities from Mortal Kombat, it would be a fair and skill based tool of massive damage.[/end rant]

Try to remember that Dragon Rush isn't the ENTIRE GAME. It's merely part of the fighting system, and therefore can be applied in one's fighting strategy or not. There's ways to avoid it and ways to use it to one's advantage, but I've never found it overwhelming. It all depends on what character and strategy one uses. If you play as Omega Shenron, you might NOT want to use Dragon Rush so you can keep a significant Ki advantage over your opponent, while if you were playing Bardock against a difficult opponent, you might want to go all out and use Dragon Rush. A unique feature of this game is the balance of Ki conservation and consumption, and Dragon Rush is simply a part of it.

Also, predicting which button a player or the CPU will choose is a psychological mind game that I've grown rather fond of.

You can keep your 2D fighters that require skill. I want innovation that also requires skill. I personally tire of the ol' button combo system.

Budokai 3 certainly isn't the best fighting game I've played...but then again, I'm not really an avid fighting game player. I rented it for about a week, and I did enjoy it while I had it. Only problem was that Dragon Rush thing...I never figured out how to do it right, and the times I did get it right, I ended up doing it too slow. I just hate it when I was playing as, say, a Super Saiyan 3 Son Goku, and then ended up losing to a weaker, smaller character because of that damn Dragon Rush. I'm such a noob.

'Nother edit....I hated it even more when I played the CPU and it continuously kept repeating that Dragon Rush like ten times.

Actually... the computer will sometimes do multiple Hyper Modes in a row with me but usually not. I've gone several rounds without a single Hyper Mode from either me or the compputer. And I personally love Dragon Rush. It could be improved upon, sure, but there's always room for improvement in any game. And I've gotten quite good at dodging and countering it too. Hell, it's fun to try to dodge or counter, especially when your health is low and you know that the next Dragon Rush you're hit with will kill you if it succeeds.

Dragonball has a history of bad games, I mean there are definatly great ones but I'd say 75% of them suck. Here is my own list....

Best Of The Bunch:

Hyper Dimentions - Super Famicom
Dragonball Z 2 - Super Famicom
Super Sonic Warriors - Gameboy Advance
Budokai 3 - PlayStation 2

Worst Of The Bunch:

Final Bout - Playstation
Dragonball Z 3 - Super Famicom
Taiketsu - Gameboy Advance
Ultimate Battle 22 - Playstation
Dragonball Z 3 - Famicom
Dragonball Z - Megadrive

Maybe it's just me, or the fact that it was the only DB game out that I knew of at the time, but I actually liked Final Bout. Mmm...

And yes, the Dragon Ball series does have a history of bad games. That's why I usually don't play DB-related games anyway.

I fucking OWN E.T. for Atari. Booyah.
You're not the only one.

Seanbaby owns.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

Yes that is true because I was introduced to Final Bout back in early '99, this was after busting my ass for almost two years trying to find a DragonBall Z game. I "stole" it from a Blockbuster when I was down in Georgia and man let me tell you. It blew my socks off. So it depends on how you are introduced to it.

Heck, I even thought UB22 was half-legit only because it was a DBZ game. But these two weren't half-of anything after I played Legends. So with the Budokais and Hyper Dimensions you learn that there are games that aren't as good as you think.

Say they come out with a game that puts the Budokai franchise to shame. Then everyone will be knocking on Budokai 1.

Ya dig.
