Gohan and Videl VA questions
Why didn't Kara Edwards voice GT Videl? She's returned to voice Videl and Goten post-GT, and Kyle Herbert continued to voice Gohan in GT, so why was Kara Edwards given the boot?
Or... why didn't Dameon Clarke voice GT Gohan since he voiced Future Gohan? If they changed Videl's VA to distinguish teen from adult, why not do the same for Gohan since he already had an adult VA?

Re: Gohan and Videl VA questions
I believe at the time they were dubbing GT, Kara had gone back to working on radio.
I'm sure Sabat and FUNImation would've probably wanted her to reprise the role of Videl, but she just wasn't available.
As for Dameon Clarke, he did return to voice Cell in GT. At the time they were producing the dub for the Trunks Special, I'm not sure if the English Dub had even reached the Buu Arc. So Kyle Hebert wasn't really established as the role of older Gohan yet, which is probably why they went with Clarke to voice the future counterpart at the time.

Exactly. But I do wonder why they decided to switch to Kyle Hebert? Clarke was a way better Gohan. But I do kinda like the switch so I can come up with a theory. Since adult Gohan from the Buu arch didn't go through all the crap the adult Gohan did after the androids killed everyone, his voice was different as a side effect to a peaceful life.Son_Gohan wrote:At the time they were producing the dub for the Trunks Special, I'm not sure if the English Dub had even reached the Buu Arc. He- he was a what?Exactly. But I do wonder why they decided to switch to Kyle Hebert? Clarke was a way better Gohan.
Re: Gohan and Videl VA questions
Could anyone kindly link me to a couple of YouTube clips showing the two Gohan voices? Or at least give me two episode numbers I could use to compare? It's been so long since I watched it on TV that I can't remember the voices changing (also doesn't help that I watched it out of order). Kyle Herbert was actually on the One Piece podcast a few weeks ago and he actually answered my question, so I'm interested in the comparison here.

Gohan's mannerisms would certainly be different, but for his voice to change, his vocal cords would've taken quite the beating by those Androids.dragondyle wrote:Exactly. I thought Kyle did a great job voicing Gohan. He captured his awkwardness early in the Saiyaman Arc and transitioned well into the more serious and badass tone once Gohan had his dormant potential unlocked. It would only make sense for Hebert to continue the role in GT, seeing as he's a fan of the Dragonball franchaise himself, he probably would've wanted to have a part in the succeeding series. Aside from Gohan, there weren't as many roles he could do, so the choice was obvious.

Actually, it may've been because Son Gohan from the Boo Arc was younger than the Son Gohan from the Trunks Special. Like 6 or 7 years younger.dragondyle wrote:Since adult Gohan from the Buu arc didn't go through all the crap the adult Gohan did after the androids killed everyone, his voice was different as a side effect to a peaceful life.

Oh, wow... I never realized how similar Herbert's Gohan voice is to his Kamina voice. 0_0;Son_Gohan wrote:Dameon Clarke - History of Trunks SpecialTeclo wrote:Could anyone kindly link me to a couple of YouTube clips showing the two Gohan voices? While we're kinda on the topic, is Trunks' voice actor different in the special as well? It sounds like Eric Vale doing a really awkward kid voice, instead of who ever did Kid Trunks during the Buu-era.

I would assume it was Eric doing Trunks' voice in the TV special, yeah. There was no Chibi Trunks to be cast at that point.Hao_Kaiser wrote:While we're kinda on the topic, is Trunks' voice actor different in the special as well? Yeah, it's a little higher pitched to try and convey a sense of youth, but that's definitely Vale. As for Clarke's Gohan, while it does fit the grittier, battle-hardened nature warrior he's become, to me the voice sounds a bit unnatural and forced. The voice Herbert used during his run in Z and all of GT fit the kind of softer, still innocent nature that he had early on, and the family man he later became.

I never really gave it much thought. I mean, it's not the first time FUNimation did a random subbing out in the transition from special/movie to the regular series. Remember that, when they first started working in-house, Ceyli Degadillo (or however you spell her name) was cast as Goku, both in DB movies 2 and 3, while in the Z series, she was cast as Dende, and when they got back to the DB series, Stephanie Nadolny was placed in the role instead.

Re: Gohan and Videl VA questions
Keep in mind, guys, that Clarke was only Future Gohan in the Trunks special. Hebert voices him in the video games.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!
