Hermits' immortality
Was it ever stated why Muten Roshi, Tsurusennin, Taopaipai and probably even Mutaito cannot die due old age?
I remember something about an elixir or a phoenix or something regarding Muten Roshi immortality but not any of the others...

Re: Hermits' immortality
I know in the Dub, Turtle says something about Roshi drinking from the fountain of youth but I dont know about the japanese version or any of the other characters.
Dont we know know that all of them DO die of old age, since we have the facts for DB Online?

Yeah, Sea Turtle says that he drank the Immortality Elixir. Kame-sennin later tells Tenshinhan the same thing (although he calls it the "Water of Immortality"), but he then says he lied and that there's no such thing.LeprikanGT wrote:I know in the Dub, Turtle says something about Roshi drinking from the fountain of youth but I dont know about the japanese version or any of the other characters.
I'm not aware of anything saying that they died. They just retired and let Kuririn and Tenshinhan take over their respective schools. There are DBO images of an even older-looking Uranai Baba, so apparently she's still alive.LeprikanGT wrote:Dont we know know that all of them DO die of old age, since we have the facts for DB Online?

And there's also videos going around of the game with Roshi still alive and kicking in the future sporting some new sunglasses.Herms wrote:Yeah, Sea Turtle says that he drank the Immortality Elixir. It is because he is a Sennin.

DB online "facts" are considered canon, now?

Re: Hermits' immortality
Somehow asked whether or not DBO depicted them as having died by Age 1000, so we answered. Anyway, we know from the manga that Kame-sennin has been alive for over 300 years, so it's quite possible he'd still be alive after another 200 years.

Alright! It makes sense. What about the phoenix? Is it a dub-line or something?Herms wrote:Yeah, Sea Turtle says that he drank the Immortality Elixir. I forgot Uranai Baba too. Not actually in-topic but we must assume Tsurusennin was able to dodge Majin Buu's wave of extinction too since he's still alive.Herms wrote:I'm not aware of anything saying that they died. So all these (Roshi, Tsurusennin, Taopaipai, Uranai Baba, etc.) are sennin?Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:It is because he is a Sennin.

I was just watching that episode the other day. The phoenix wasn't a dub line.Senzu_Bean wrote:

I'd assume they're all considered sennin, considering two of them actually have that as part of their names.
Re: Hermits' immortality
Considering how old Taopaipai must be, I wouldn't be surprised. In Uranai Baba's case, I'm tempted to blame it on magic.Senzu_Bean wrote:So all these (Roshi, Tsurusennin, Taopaipai, Uranai Baba, etc.) are sennin?

Re: Hermits' immortality
But why are they sennin? Because they drunk the Immortality Elixir?
Re: Hermits' immortality
No. Like Roshi said, there's no such thing as an immortality elixir. A Sennin is someone who's basically transcended mortality with physical and mental training. The old master guy who can seemingly perform miracles, like speaking to you even from beyond the grave.Senzu_Bean wrote:But why are they sennin? Because they drunk the Immortality Elixir?
I suppose Yoda from Star Wars would be a sort of example? He died, of course, but not for over 700 years.

Re: Hermits' immortality
You know, I wonder why the other characters in the series, especially the Saiyans, weren't treated as Sen'nins. I mean, of course, they're not as old as Kame-Sen'nin, Tao Pai Pai and the others. But with their physical and mental training, which is assumedly much more advanced that the Sen'nin's, you would think that they would've transcended mortality.Bussani wrote:No. Like Roshi said, there's no such thing as an immortality elixir. Although, maybe the Sen'nin are not actually Sen'nins. Maybe they do die after a certain period of time. It's said that a Sen'nin is someone who has transcended mortality with physical and mental training. Possibly, because Kame-Sen'nin appeared to have stopped training, then his supposed immortality would've weakened. But then again, if that was so, then he would've just dropped down dead or died sooner...

Re: Hermits' immortality
Thus is the Immortality Elixir just a lie of Muten Roshi? And when and who mentioned the phoenix?
And can we assume, at least, Tienshinhan and Chaotzu are sennin too? Since they basically only live to train and are humans just like Roshi and Tsurusennin.

Apparently. That's what Kame-sennin himself says, anyway.
It's mentioned when Bulma and Goku first meet Kame-sennin. He tries to summon it and have it grant Bulma and Goku immortality. However, nothing is said about Kame-sennin himself having gained immortality from the Phoenix. And when and who mentioned the phoenix?

Re: Hermits' immortality
I think it really depends. Sennin aren't immortal in every story you see them in. Like the Yoda example, sometimes they just live an extremely long time. Likewise, I don't think Roshi ever talked to anyone from beyond the grave, or performed any other real 'miracles'.Piccolo Daimao wrote:You know, I wonder why the other characters in the series, especially the Saiyans, weren't treated as Sen'nins. There's no way of knowing if Roshi will just plain live forever, but I can see him doing so simply for humorous reasons.

Re: Hermits' immortality
They probably did some kind of special training for 50 years or something that specifically made them sennin. Wow, is there anything I can't fix by making shit up?Piccolo Daimao wrote:You know, I wonder why the other characters in the series, especially the Saiyans, weren't treated as Sen'nins. Roshi and Tsurusennin are obviously sennin, Taopaipai and Uranai Baba aren't but Baba is immortal due to her ties with the afterworld.Senzu_Bean wrote: So all these (Roshi, Tsurusennin, Taopaipai, Uranai Baba, etc.) are sennin?

Taopaipai is almost 300 years old when the series starts, though.
