Where does Pilaf make his money?

Pilaf's Daizenshuu 7 bio says that he's wealthy, which is how he affords the castle and whatnot. It doesn't say where he got the money from, but it does say that he's a "self-styled grand scientist", and in the series Pilaf says that he personally designed the Pilaf Machine. Toriyama says in the Daizenshuu 4 vehicle section that despite how he looks, Pilaf is actually pretty smart (at least as far as building robots goes).

Also, Pilaf created a Dragon Radar comparable to Bulma`s while the RR army wasn`t able to create one that could pinpoint the location of the Dragon Balls.

So he must be pretty smart.

I have to wonder why Toriyama went with Dr. Gero as the creator of the Androningen and not Pilaf. XD
I mean, it's not too incredibly difficult to imagine some reasons, but a Pilaf-sponsored Cell arc suddenly seems interesting...

Pilaf wouldn't make for a very scary-looking Android is probably why Gero was used instead. Plus Pilaf was more slapstick and silly- having him do what Gero did would completely alter the character's dynamics.

I made it up because I don't want to sound like an elitist and use Jinzouningen all the time, but don't want to sound careless and use android all the time. I mean, extremes like that aren't really all that real, but rather than settling on one (or the more awkward "artificial human"), I just threw them together. I am indecision.
