Mr. Satan's name

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Mr. Satan's name

Post by SilverPlaqueVII » Tue Feb 23, 2010 8:25 pm

So in terms of it, Mr. Satan was just a name that Toriyama made for patterns (even Videl). Mr. Satan is used in the Japanese media, Uncut FUNimation DVDs, and the Mexican IntelliTRACK dub. However, he was called "HERCULE" in the FUNimation and Viz edited releases. Mark is clarified in the Super Exciting Guide.

So in terms of it, The sky was just blue and had clouds in it (which are white). The sky can be seen in Japan, United Kingdom, and Mexico. However, the sky is "BLACK" at night. This is clarified when you look up.

It sounds to me like our friend Silver is sort of bouncing this off of us to make sure he has it all right.

Which he does, almost. "Hercule" didn't originate from the FUNimation dub first. Some European dub, a French one I think, used the name because they had already assigned the name "Satan" in part or whole to Piccolo.

And it's worth mentioning, I suppose, that "Mr. Savage" was something of a prototype name used in marketing action figures in the years before FUNimation actually dubbed the episodes in which he appeared.

Which would have been totally preferable to "Hercule," if you ask me.

If tips can differ, It has nothing to do with the Satanic connection. Seriously, the real name for Satan was Mark or if you ask me, Akuma.

Toriyama revealed that in 2009 though. FUNimation decided to name the character Hercule in 2000, nine years before Toriyama revealed Mr. Satan's actual name. The information wasn't around back then, so they couldn't name him Mark. Well, they could've, but it would've been entirely coincidental.

Agreed. The H-word just came completely out of left field. At least Mr. Savage seems tangentially-related to the original name.

Māku, not Akuma. Akuma is the Japanese word for devil or Satan. Toriyama rearranged that and got Māku, or Mark.

I wonder, if "Mark" had been around back when they first started dubbing the Cell arc, would they have used that name to refer to him in the edited version instead of the "H" word?

FUNimation could have used Mr. Tasan or Mr. Nastan which are anagrams like Videl.

I think Daimao said he was for calling him Mr. Saturn.

These names wouldn't mean anything, and would sound awkward on top of that.

I believe PD was saying, they could have at least tried to use some variation of the word Satan, as opposed to naming him Hercule. Like Videl = Devil.

Personally, I feel they should have went with Dante. It would have been less overt compared to Satan, while at the same time keeping the same meaning.

Beelz is the only correct choice. If you can call censorship correct.

Or "Mr. Beel", but pronounced more like "Mr. Bill"? :P. That's scary, so ...
