Re: Mr. Satan's name
That doesn't sound nearly as awkward as 'Mr. Tasan' or 'Mr. Nastan'. And I always assumed the name they used for him had something to do with Hercules. It at least holds some semblance of a real word/name, and doesn't come off as sounding poorly-contrived.

Actually... Mr. Bill would still hold the pun. I think. If "Bill" in Japanese is "biru" and if "devil" in Japanese is "debiru" well, there you go.

Yeah, FUNimation could have a demon-related name or anagram that children wouldn't have understood.B wrote:Beelz is the only correct choice. If you can call censorship correct.
Mr. Beelz or Mr. Beezel would have worked fine and they don't sound too weird in my opinion.

How does Dante carry the same meaning as Satan at all. Dante was a regular human who got taken on a tour of Hell by the ancient Roman poet Virgil.the_abberration wrote:Personally, I feel they should have went with Dante. It would have been less overt compared to Satan, while at the same time keeping the same meaning.

How about Mr. Santa? Still has all of the letters and it's much more kid friendly.

Maybe if they'd named him after a menacing figure from a non-Abrahamic pantheon? Like... umm... Loki? Mara? Ares? Annubis?
Then again, I guess that's what they sorta kinda did.

Re: Mr. Satan's name
When I think of Satan, I associate him with Hell or the embodiment of evil (to put it simply). Through the representation of Hell (as well as Satan) in "Dante's Inferno", I feel that Dante could be associated with Hell and/or Satan or the embodiment of evil (albeit his version of it). In that regard, it could be an apt pseudonym for Satan. I mean, there may be some individuals who think of "Dante's Inferno" as a representation of circus clowns after a wild party, but I have yet to meet one.Rocketman wrote:How does Dante carry the same meaning as Satan at all. Also, Dante has been used in various JP anime, to represent Satan, a devil, a demon, or otherwise villainous character. Examples would include:
Dante from Devil May Cry who is a demon, Dante from FMA, who was the leader of the Homunculi (who in a way could be considered as demon-like in their representations as the seven deadly sins with Dante being Satan-like as their leader/creator), and Demon Lord Dante, who in that anime was strongly equal to Satan himself (although Satan does appear as well). In some areas, this anime is referred to as Dante the Satan.
Finally, due to my own personal beliefs as to where Mr. Toriyama got the inspiration for the Mr. Satan character, calling him Dante would have been the same thing IMO.

Those are all references to the Dante of Dante's Inferno, though, not Satan. It's still easier to just call him Satan. Hell, it's not like 'Satan' is blasphemous or anything.the_abberration wrote:When I think of Satan, I associate him with Hell or the embodiment of evil (to put it simply). Re: Mr. Satan's name
I disagree. In reference to Go Nagai's Demon Lord Dante, he is subbing Dante for Satan. Alternate titles include Dante the Satan (clearly equating the two), and Mauo Dante which the "Mauo" I believe translates into Satan or Devil King in Japanese kanji. Also, Akira Fuuga made a remake of Demon Lord Dante called Shin Maō Dante which I believe translates into The True Devil Lord Dante. In both cases, they are not referring to Dante's Inferno.Dayspring wrote:Those are all references to the Dante of Dante's Inferno, though, not Satan. It's still easier to just call him Satan. As for the Dante I believe inspired Mr. Toriyama's Mr Satan charater, it was not the Dante's Inferno character I was referring to.

Re: Mr. Satan's name
I mean that Dante as anything worth noting traces its origins to Dante's Inferno, whereas Satan, The Dragon and The Beast are related to devil figures introduced in the actual Bible.the_abberration wrote:I disagree. But there's basically no need to discuss this, since it's a moot point anyway. Satan is still closer to Satan.

Re: Mr. Satan's name
Lucifer is an actual name for one thing (but it can also work as a title).Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:How would that be less taboo than Mr. Satan?rereboy wrote:Mr. Lucifer FTW
And besides that, It has significantly less shock value since not all kids associate Lucifer with devil or satan and it would preserve the original meaning.

Not all kids but definately their parents. Ever since Paradise Lost pretty much everybody associates Lucifer with the Devil nowadays.rereboy wrote:Lucifer is an actual name for one thing (but it can also work as a title).Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:How would that be less taboo than Mr. Satan?rereboy wrote:Mr. Lucifer FTW
