Ginyu Special-Squad bettings and differences

Post by SilverPlaqueVII » Mon Apr 05, 2010 2:05 pm

So in the FUNimation version, they GSS thinks they watched soap operas, betting candy on fights, play bowling, and playing Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide the order they should fight. Isn't that absent from the original Japanese version?

No, the candy betting and rock paper scissors are very much part of the Japanese show. I mean, that's visually on the screen. The soap operas and bowling references were just lines inserted by FUNimation.

And don't forget the Ginyu Fitness Club. :P

I actually like some of the added stuff in the FUNimation dub. It further shows just how silly these guys are.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!

I think they bet on chocolate milkshake(in the Finnish manga anyway).
Didn't they say in the dub that if Gurd loses he'll be out of the Ginyu Bowling team?

Yup. Burter says he'll be kicked out of the Ginyu force if he loses, and then Jeice says, "And not to mention your spot on the Bowling team!"

Yeah, the silly dub stuff actually works for the Ginyu Squad.

Same for Bautta, Reakoomu, Jhiszu all above and beyond. As well, Reakoomu had dentistry and paid vacations.

In the Japanese manga it's chocolate parfait.

Agreed, sometimes the added dub humour works.

I don't think there's manything wrong with the dub additions, here, so long as we're excluding redub Recoome's "Duuhh me strong retard" voice. (I don't really mind the Solvester Stalone-esque version much... XD )

Although I agree that the humor works, well...I just don't think it should be there. Not because it's bad, it's not, but the purpose of a translation should be to stick to the original as best you can.

The only times you should really change something is 1.) if there's a clear mistake in the original that needs fixing, or 2.) if there's some kind of cultural reference that just doesn't translate properly, like a complicated pun or the Japanese kinds of speech.

A prime example of #2 would be in Final Fantasy VI. The Japanese version showed Kefka's insanity by having jump from one style of speech to another mid-sentence. That's difficult to show in English at the best of times, and when Ted Woolsey was translating it, he had only a month to translate that entire epic game. So he just threw out Kefka's entire way of speaking and showed his insanity by taking the craziness that was there in the original and cranking it all the way to the max. (I've heard this is why Kefka is more popular in the West than in Japan, but I can't vouch that that's true) I'd give him a pass on that.

Take the Faulconer music. I actually enjoy some of his tracks and feel that occasionally, they work better than the original score. But despite that, I don't think they should have been put in. The original work should be left to stand or fall on its own.

(Mind you, I'm a complete hypocrite on this when it comes to Godzilla, as while I generally prefer the original Japanese versions, there are a few changes that don't fall under reason 1 or 2 that I still prefer...)

I can agree with changes if there's no way to accurately translate them or find some sort of equivalent between Japanese and English. At least in dubs. Music, on the other hand, is a completely different story. If you won't give me the Japanese version of the song, give me a dub of the song or an instrumental like the Dragonball, GT, and Kai op/ed songs or the three Budoukai games.

I do like "Heroic Trunks," though.

Yup. Burter says he'll be kicked out of the Ginyu force if he loses, and then Jeice says, "And not to mention your spot on the Bowling team!"
I agree. The so-called "Ginyu Bowling Team" is a name for the Ginyu Special-Squad's team when they are participating in the World Trade Organization bowling tournament, a bowling tournament held by Freeza's army. It is only mentioned once during Gulurdo's fight with Gohan and Kuririn. Reakoomu says that if he can't beat them than he is off the team.

Not much is known about the Ginyu Special-Squad's bowling tournament winning streak since it is never mentioned again. But not even Bautta's conventions. Reakoomu and Jhiszu that they receive dentistry and paid vacations as well. These ideas never existed in both manga and the original Japanese anime.

I'm with Thanos in that I don't like dubs changing lines just for the hell of it. Those Ginyu lines don't seem out of character like a lot of Funi dub lines, but I guess they don't strike me as funny enough to really justify adding them in.
