Well, those "beautiful blocks" are because idiots encoded them with RealVideo and put them out there for people with 56k to download back in the late 90's. AnimeLabs were old school. VHS for life, playa.

I don't think I could ever go back to phone lines for the internet now. @_@ Remember how it was back before cell phones were widespread? If someone else needed to use the phone (and it would be a landline because no cell phones yet; at least at my house) you'd have to get off the internet and wait until they were done talking to whoever they were talking to? And everything took forever to load....

All I remember is that it took all morning for AOL to load that Toonami Flash Game for Thundercats with the mummies....and I played the crap out of that game for the rest of the day.

Also, yes, These say Copyrighted (yeah lol) 1999. Back in the glory days of a dial-up oriented internet, sacrifices had to be made. Not to mention, storing a decent 500mb or so rip off of a vhs tape (I doubt it would be compressed well without severe quality loss, so I'd like to think they'd avoid it...video compression technology back then was disgusting) would consume huge chunks of people's what? 5-20gb hard drives?

What's disturbing about this post is that, the way the URL was cut to appear on the page and the way that Jaws pronounced it leaves it looking as though the picture is named "lotion".
Meanwhile, the actual name makes much more sense in context.

So, I chanced across a fansubbed version of Dragon Ball Kai episode 15 earlier today in which Vegeta's shout of "kisama" to Krillin and Gohan was translated to "Mother ... Fuckers!" He then proceeded to say he was going to "beat the ever living shit out of them." I'm pretty sure there was at least one other really extraneous "shit" tossed in somewhere else too. Strange stuff, because the subtitles for most of the episode had been fairly accurate until that point.

I guess we're still dealing with this sort of thing.

Like "kuso" can be translated into "shit", "crap", "fuck" and so on?
If that's the case, people can go nuts on translating the swearwords, using the more obscene ones, like Animelabs did.

"Kisama," while rude, bears nowhere near the level of cultural offense that "mother fucker" does in English. And that's certainly not a literal translation.

"Kuso" to "shit," I can see, but again, they have very different cultural connotations. And regardless, Vegeta did not say anything even close to "I'm going to beat the ever living shit out of you!" if they were being literal.

Oh, and I just remembered the other instance of "shit." Vegeta used the word "gomi" (trash). So, yeah. Not even close. It was a clear case of trying to make it seem more bad-ass by adding vulgarity, which is ridiculous in 2010.

I think the determinant in translating these words is how they're used in Japanese, not how "possible" "vulgarities" are used in English.
Kai's censorship seems like a good way to gauge that. I.E: are any "swearwords" censored in Kai? Since nudity and excessive gore seem to be reduced, it'd make sense that offensive language would be reduced as well.
If, though, "Kuso" and "bakayaro!" and "chikushou!" are still found in Kai despite its removal of penis and bloodbaths, said terms are clearly appropriate for the target audience / timeslot in Japan, then the F and S words (both of which are bleaped on US television while "ass" and "damn" are sometimes allowed) are ridiculous translations.

Though one of the difficulties with translating the varying levels of rudeness in Japanese into English is that English doesn't really have so many levels in terms of language. We've got "Hey, you", "Hey, jerk!" and "YOU BASTARD!". Japanese has "Kimi", "anata", "anta", "omae", "kisama", and I've probably missed some... and all of those just mean "you". None of the English examples carry the same nuance at all.

These translations are not aimed at (the parents of) American 8-year-olds, and they definitely don't follow American censorship standards. The dialogue is translated to sound natural in context.

Except there's nothing natural at all in seeing f-bombs dropped in what is clearly, in every other way shape and form, a children's cartoon. It's wildly incongruous.

I understand that the Japanese version doesn't exactly have to censor itself, because there aren't any true curse words in that language. But for whatever reason, there are in English. Just as you wouldn't expect Japanese Vegeta to go off on a rant about violating someone's mother or something, you wouldn't expect him to swear like a sailor in English.

Long story short: "Kisama" is not the equivalent in rudeness to "fucker." There are more offensive things they could be saying in Japanese. They are not saying them.

It's not some gritty, hyper realistic space opera that lays it all out there. It's a ridiculous, plot-hole ridden kid's show, and demanding that it drop any and all semblance of self-censorship is ... stupid.

I don't think at all it'd be out of character for Vegeta to be cursing up a storm were he a native English-speaking genocidal maniac. But as it turns out Toei has decided his language is completely reasonable for Japanese kids to hear, but not necessarily the mountains of corpses and lakes of blood that he has created throughout his lifetime. If a part of translation is conveying meaning, then better to scrap realism in favor of meaning.
In Shounen anime you hear "Kuso" "chikusho" and "kisama" all over the place. How many "fuck" "shit" "asshole" and "douchebag"s do you hear in the English equivalent*?


* Doubly ironic that I answer someone from a non-English country with a question about English entertainment after he answered a visually impaired person with an image. It wasn't intentional; I couldn't really think of a better way to phrase it. But "Motherfucker" is clearly more offensive than "kisama".
