Since there is something, that I have not properly understood:

are the dvds and blu-rays now region-free ???

No, they're not region free. The Blu-ray has been confirmed as being Region A and Region B. So it will also play in most European countries and Australia, among others. I haven't seen anyone mention the DVD region codes, but DragonBall titles are usually Region 1 and Region 4. I would assume it's the same deal with Kai until someone says otherwise.

That's a completely reasonable change. You say 'kilometer' to 97% of Americans they just stare blankly at you and have to look it up for it to mean anything. If you're translating in America for an American audience, you use the terms of measure that mean something to us. Like I never got what the problem with it being 45 degrees in that sweet old "Beds are Burning" song till I went and translated the temps. Then it actually meant something.

Oh trust me, I know exactly why they did it. Americans are too stubborn to understand something the rest of the modern world uses, even though saying "one million" anything makes it sound really long. And I wasn't particularly mad about that unit change, what I'm more concerned about is them not changing the number. We've had inconsistencies like this before, why make another one? I'd understand if they were actually using the Japanese title cards and they didn't want to confuse people with two different numbers, so they just left the number as-as. But since they're only using their own dub title cards, why not just change the number so that it matches up distance-wise? If Goku really ran one million miles, he'd have run way past Kaio's planet.

And you don't translate distances or temperatures, you convert them.

1 million miles = ~1,61 million km

The way would therefore longer by 61% !

I mean with a correct translation/conversion, every DB Fan in USA would look up what kilometers are !
Why should not DBZ educate people ??? ^^

I admit, that does seem kinda sloppy on Funimation's part.
But Kai has made the series a hell of a lot more watchable for me (much better audio and pacing etc).
So they are probably gonna get my money anyway.

After a day of being able to listen to the clear dubbed opening and ending, I have to say I like Dragon Soul more than YBCB. I think Sean's an excellent singer and the autotuning doesn't really bother me anymore. As for YBCB, it's good too and Jerry's awesome, but compared to the original, he sings too slowly and calmly. But if not compared to the original, I'd say it's really awesome.

If you're sitting on the fence, just concentrate on the Dbox only. You know you want those sets, right? Save yourself the money until the DBox is finished and the earlier Kai sets are dirt cheap. Then maybe you won't feel so bad about purchasing something that doesn't have alternate angles.

Kai's got TV broadcast rights on two channels in the US. It's not going anywhere and it'll likely be pretty popular with the kids. It's safe. The DBox, on the other hand, isn't necessarily limited or rare but it is something that FUNi is monitoring to decide if they should release DBox the Movies (Z movies only, I think). We want DBox the Movies. Go with the DBox.

Alternate angles weren't expected.


Using alternate angles for DVD hurts video quality. Funi had significant problems with video quality until they gave up using alternate angles for title cards and a few other things.


While it is possible on Blu-ray without that problem, it adds to the complexity of the authoring.

Not to mention when you then add translated title cards with an alternate angle, well then the question comes up if they should go back to alternate angles for credits.... and then you are stuffing more video on disks that are already relatively packed....

I do not think this is a mistake but that it was deliberately chosen.

I posted that on page 7. Well from my discovery I noticed that not only is it just episode 12's subtitle them is not translated, but episode 6's themes are not translated. I wonder why.

I'm going to guess when Gohan was crying when Piccolo first drops him off in the field.

I always thought it was cute in Z when they took the time to animate Gohan taking it off, folding it, and setting it aside. Piccolo just stands there patiently waiting.

This is a product aimed primarily at English speakers.

The Japanese do the same thing when our shows go there in general.

His user account here (and elsewhere) is Daimao. He was a fan before becoming FUNimation's first legitimet translator. Here is the podcast interview with him. Basically, he's a pretty cool guy who translated things and doesn't afraid of anything.
