DBZ: Ultimate Battle 22 - Hilarious Translations

Post by Aurek » Tue Apr 19, 2005 3:25 pm

Hi,
I dont know if you guys are aware of the absurd but highly amusing translations and descriptions that appear in the manual to this PS1 game. Here are links to some scans I made. Sorry for the large image dimensions but I didnt know how to use the scanner very well and I wanted all the text to come out. I'm am quite perplexed as to how they can (more correctly than the dub) name 17 and 18 Cyborgs, yet call Captain Ginyu; Genious.

They're "translated" from the French versions of UB22/FB IIRC.

And this isn't halve as bad as the Dutch translation of the booklet of Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle for the SNES. That's was a horror, with more genderbending than the actual series :P

Ha Ha Ha Ha. Trunk vs Gotrunks.
And "circular jet" Ha Ha Ha Ha. Why can't they stick to one method of naming? There's Ta-(i)-yo ken so why isn't it Ki-enzan instead?

The American instruction manual is pretty wiggy as well. In fact, I think that most of it's the same...

Read my UB22 strategy on GameFAQs to see what I mean... Great Saiyaman's REALLY hurts my head.

I think the manual for the British version is the same as I flipped through it once. I can't remembe what they called Mr. Satan but I know it wasn't right.

Oh no.. "Genius Turtle" returns, take cover!

And Kameha-meha.. man, just the other day I recalled Gohan saying that in the early dub. XD

Be careful, Frieza has called on the elite "Genious Commando"!

He's referred to as Mr. Satan in the actual American game, and the manual refers to him as "Hercule Satan".

That may have been translated directly from the French instruction booklet. I think Muten Roshi's name in the French version was translated as "Tortue Géniale".

Is anyone else somewhat disturbed by Recoome's name being tranlated as 'Likum'?

Mr. Satan Satan...
(Chris Sabat Vegeta voice) BLAST YOU NAME CENSORING SYSTEM!!!

The manual calls him H ercule Satan (disregard the space between the H & e, of course)

Final Bout is an inferior game but has a superior translation. In fact read the Spanish version of the FB manual, the translation from English is amazingly similar to the English manual and it's not even a direct translation! I think it's the same with the Spanish UB22 manual as well.

The "Likum" is probably because R and L are interchangable in Japanese, and this translation decided to make it an L.

Quite amusing, yeah. Of course, it was also pretty funny what the noobs at school thought when they had Final Bout and UB22 burned from Random person #44 when the show only got up to the Saiyan saga.
