Re: "Dragon Soul" Dub Lyrics -- Posted by Sean Schemmel
Hmm, I wonder why they would totally re-record the TV version with a different singer? It's like FUNimation is really trying to make two totally different shows here. It boggles my mind. That said, I don't mind the Mignona version.

My friend messaged Vic about it and he responded:
hi Matt,
I hope you like my version. I'm curious about a few things...
Why is it "very odd" that they didnt use Sean's version? It's not Goku singing the theme.
I was looking at some of the comments and I think it's important to point out a few things...
1. Sean doesnt "pay homeage to the Japanese original" He took many liberties with the melody and his vocal quality is nothing like the original.
2. I initially sang a version of the song very close to the original japanese vocal, and then they had me sing it the way it currently is. They wanted it sung that way.
I'm sorry to say that I dont have a full length version.... I only recorded what they needed for the series open.
Thanks for your support

I personally think Vic is dissing Sean here but thats how I read it.

I like Sean's version better. It has more power to it.Dbzbabe wrote:Here is Vic's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMVyNss_q4IRazorX wrote:I thought Vic screwed up Funi's opening of Dan Dan, so I was glad to hear it wasnt Vic who sang Funi's Dragon Soul opening. I think Sean did alright but it could've been better.
If Vic did song the TV version of Dragon Soul, then comparisons with Sean's version are inevitable.
I think Vic's version stinks ^^ Hes usually a very good singer but for some reason he just sounds terrible for this, I heard Vic is the one who originally sang this song originally and Sean rerecorded it for the DVD release, thank god because Sean's voice works so much better for it.

I like how he says that Sean didn't pay homage to the original Japanese, meanwhile Vic's version doesn't sound anything like the original neither. And yeah, the words are the same so... what the shizzle?
Re: "Dragon Soul" Dub Lyrics -- Posted by Sean Schemmel
Keep in mind I'm just speculating here, but given all the negative feedback I've read about Sean Schemmel's version, is it possible they made this one to replace it, but were too late to put it on the first DVD/Blu-Ray? I guess the only way to find out for sure is to wait for the second part of the home release and see what version it has. And if that has Sean Schemmel's version, well, then I'm out of ideas and just as stumped as you are.Gaffer Tape wrote:Hmm, I wonder why they would totally re-record the TV version with a different singer? It's not like he's criticizing him for it. He just said that he didn't.TheGreatness25 wrote:I like how he says that Sean didn't pay homage to the original Japanese, meanwhile Vic's version doesn't sound anything like the original neither. And yeah, the words are the same so... what the shizzle?

The man said this:
"Sean doesn't "pay homage to the Japanese original" He took many liberties with the melody and his vocal quality is nothing like the original." (yes I fixed some typos)
Sounds like a negative criticism to me. And yet, his is no better in remedying these issues. Say what you want about which version you like more, but these particular issues that he seems to criticize over are not fixed in his performance. His seems way too overdone, like he's trying to channel Christina Aguillera, and Schemmel's seemed a bit less enthusiastic than desired. But if I had to choose one of the two, I'd go with Schemmel's. Especially since his performance resembles the original more in terms of the voice, etc.

Keep in mind we don't know the exact context that he was replying to. The original message may have been phrased in a way to imply that Sean Schemmel's performance was superior because he stayed closer to the original (which it didn't, really.)

Did you completely miss the part where Mignogna said he did two takes, and they went with the second--the one he did that wasn't close to the original?TheGreatness25 wrote:I like how he says that Sean didn't pay homage to the original Japanese, meanwhile Vic's version doesn't sound anything like the original neither. Re: "Dragon Soul" Dub Lyrics -- Posted by Sean Schemmel
Yeah but that doesn't mean much. For all we know, Sean Schemmel got up that morning, looked at himself in the mirror, and read 35 pages of Goku's original Japanese lines, complete with the "Sciya-jin" pronunciations, but you see the end product. You can't say, "Yeah well I know that what you see is not any better than Schemmel's attempt, but hey! I did it perfectly before and they decided not to show it!"
Re: "Dragon Soul" Dub Lyrics -- Posted by Sean Schemmel
I'm not quite sure what argument you're trying to make. Mignogna's opinion (statement of fact?) was that Schemmel took liberties with his version of Dragon Soul. By simple comparison, we can tell the same was done with the Mignogna version we heard. Nobody is dissing anybody else here, they're stating facts about the situation.TheGreatness25 wrote:Yeah but that doesn't mean much. Actually, look up his convention appearances on YouTube. He comes off as a really awesome and nice guy. You really can't judge someone based on a sorta-ambiguous quote.mystic trunks wrote:Wow. This Vic seems like a real dic.

He is. Listening to him on the One Piece Season Two Seventh Voyage audio commentary (episode #140) he sounds like one of the nicest guys in the whole world. While his performances might not be universally praised, he undoubtably follows the acting ideologies of a true actor. I have no doubt there was no ill intent in his words.Greenman wrote:Actually, look up his convention appearances on YouTube. He comes off as a really awesome and nice guy. Not to mention he played John Proctor on stage. That's ten thousand awesome points right there.

Did he and Schemmel have some kind of feud or something? Why is he trashing the guy like that?
