Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
I just had a thought:
Will Toei give Funi the 2nd and the 3rd opening animations and the second ending since they didn't with Dragon Ball and if they do get the 2nd ending who would sing it? I reckon Stephanie Nadolny could since she sings in a rock band or the person who sang the Dragon Ball ending.
And another thing:
Does the big secret have anything to do with the next DVD or is it to do with the dub itself?

I think they will get the 2nd OP and the song is still the same and still sing by Sean Schemmel.DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:I just had a thought:

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
I think the problem with the alternate theme animations for Dragon Ball was the fact that FUNi didn't have textless versions available. Toei might not have even had them to give, since they weren't in the extras on the Japanese Dragon Box either. Since Kai is such a new show, Toei should easily still have textless versions of the theme animations to give out.DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:I just had a thought:

Oh man, the line where Goku is complaining about how his body feels like it's filled with lead on King Kai's planet is awesome. The way Schemmel says "DAMN!" is hilarious.

Because Kaio's Funi voice is grating, annoying and at times out of character. Frieza's voice is not out of character, its a different take from the Japanese version but both are cold and at times ruthless.VegettoEX wrote:You're saying that they can recast one of their characters (Kaio) with someone else from their current pool of actors (Doc Morgan)... so... remind me why again they couldn't re-cast one of their characters (Freeza) with someone else from their current pool of actors...?

Freeza's voice in that clip is deep enough and the acting is quite good, well, better than what you'd expect from Funimation.
Nope. If Freeza is recast, the voice probably wont be deeper than what you hear in the clip above, and the acting probably wont be as good.It seems like you're just holding on to Linda Young for no apparent reason.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Man if anybody is gonna attempt to defend Linda Young's Freeza then at least use clips from the redub....
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Season Three Frieza is your idea of "better than what you'd expect from FUNimation"? Somehow, I find that rather insulting of a statement.RazorX wrote:Freeza's voice in that clip is deep enough and the acting is quite good, well, better than what you'd expect from Funimation.
Seriously. Season Three's Frieza was the bottom of the barrel in terms of the dub, in terms of both directing and acting. It just seems that saying that it was "better" than what most of the dub had to offer seems like an ignorant, or behind the times statement to make, because they have undoubtedly improved drastically since Season Three's dub.Chrono Trigger wrote:Man if anybody is gonna attempt to defend Linda Young's Freeza then at least use clips from the redub....

FUNimation employs actual actors now, many with quite a bit of stage and on-camera work. Trust me, they can easily find a better Freeza.RazorX wrote:Nope. If Freeza is recast, the voice probably wont be deeper than what you hear in the clip above, and the acting probably wont be as good.

Yes, the FUNimation of today is not the same FUNimation of 1999. They may not be able to find a dead-ringer for Nakao, but they certainly can find a voice actor who can fit the character more closely in terms of acting and voice.JulieYBM wrote:FUNimation employs actual actors now, many with quite a bit of stage and on-camera work. Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
If you're referring to the Namek episodes that Funi redubbed after Ocean, that would negate the point about Frieza's deepened voice, since I'm trying to show that once the voice filter is applied, Frieza's voice is deep enough.Chrono Trigger wrote:Man if anybody is gonna attempt to defend Linda Young's Freeza then at least use clips from the redub....
IIRC, the voice in that clip is redubbed, its from the season sets with Japanese music.Metalwario64 wrote:Season Three Fri eza is your idea of "better than what you'd expect from FUNimation"? Somehow, I find that rather insulting of a statement.
However, in season 3, Frieza's voice was better than most of the other newcomers acting wise.
Not if Travis Willingham is their idea of a good replacement for Cell.JulieYBM wrote:FUNimation employs actual actors now, many with quite a bit of stage and on-camera work. Trust me, they can easily find a better Freeza.

He's copying somebody else's voice. A new Freeza would likely not copy a voice.RazorX wrote:Not if Travis Willingham is their idea of a good replacement for Cell.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
What if they get the new direction wrong? Its too late to be experimenting with a voice for a character which holds as much importance as Freeza.JulieYBM wrote: He's copying somebody else's voice. A new Freeza would likely not copy a voice.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Assuming they're going through with it, they would do it with care. They did so with their other recasts (barring Cell, which I'm still hoping they seperate from Clarke's portrayal before it records).RazorX wrote:What if they get the new direction wrong? Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
The reason Travis' performance is an imitation of Clarke's is because Clarke was unavailable, and they wanted the same general voice. If Frieza was recast, it wouldn't be due to Young's availability, but because they wanted to go in a different direction with it. I highly doubt they would cast an imitator when the real thing is readily available.
No, not in that scene. Only a couple of form 2 and 3 Frieza lines were re-dubbed, most, if not all of the first form, and the first episode with his final form.RazorX wrote:IIRC, the voice in that clip is redubbed, its from the season sets with Japanese music.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Actually I'm pretty sure Freeza is redubbed up until about 2 episodes into final form Freeza.Metalwario64 wrote:No, not in that scene. Only a couple of form 2 and 3 Frieza lines were re-dubbed, most, if not all of the first form, and the first episode with his final form.
But still I'm all for a replacement and will never defend Young's Freeza.

Kind of off-track, but what happened to Dameon Clarke? Why would he get replaced? I liked his voice.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
He moved to LA. I also hear he quit VAing, but I can't confirm that.TheGreatness25 wrote:Kind of off-track, but what happened to Dameon Clarke? Why would he get replaced? I liked his voice.

For a long time, Scott/Kaiser and I mulled how over anyone ever cast to dub over a character played by Ryuusei Nakao (i.e., not just Freeza) just flat-out either COULDN'T replicate the type of voice he has, or they'd opt out and try the shrill, sorta creepy, expected sort of scratchy voice (Mayuri Kurotsuchi, for instance) instead of trying to go for exactly what he sounds like...I was wrong, however.Metalwario64 wrote:Yes, the FUNimation of today is not the same FUNimation of 1999.
