Why is Broli such a huge fan favorite?
A friend of mine and I were having this discussion the other day:
Why does Broli get so much love? Where does the appeal come from?
Why is this character so insanely popular?
He is big, bulky, looks slow, (even though he's not) and just looks like a big fat ass with muscles. Not to mention he never says much except "Kakarrot!!!!"
I think the "idea" of his character is a good one and I even enjoyed the first Broli movie, but with only 3 appearances total, how did he climb so high on the popularity ladder?
Even in fan fiction and comics, (DBZ multiverse or Toyable's) Broli is often times the main focus.
Why? Do I just not understand how cool he is?
What is it about this character that appeals to so many?
It is spelled Broli, right? Not Broly??

Well, yeah: He's powerful but then, who isn't in DBZ??
Being powerful doesn't really set him apart from anyone else.

Because his power level is maximum.
....Someone had to do it.
Edit: Personally, one theory I have that separates Broly from the other movies villains is that Broly is a Super Saiyan and maybe thats part of the appeal.

Reasons I've heard include:
- He's the first villain to truly pwn all the main characters at once.
- They like the legendary SSJ idea.
I don't really understand either to be honest. Broly was basically designed with SSJ Grade 3 Trunks in mind as that was tossed into the scrap pile rather quickly, so it can't be the way he looks. He barely has any dialogue either, so it can't really be his character... I don't really get it myself. Maybe that he was so menacing and cruel in Movie 8?
His other movies depicted him as too much of a brute idiot. He couldn't even tell the difference between Gohan and Goku, not to mention getting somewhat outsmarted by a couple of kids. All with one line in the entire movie. "KAKAROT! BLAAARGH!"

Not ragging on you, just pointing out that it's a silly point.

Re: Why is Broli such a huge fan favorite?
Actually it might have been both of them now that I think of it. I don't know why they insisted on making him look so dumb in movie 10. I mean, sure, he looked like a hardcore stoner in his base form in movie 8, but he actually seemed to have some intelligence in that movie, not to mention dialogue. >_>Kid Buu wrote:Wasn't it Goten and Goku he thought was the same person?
I agree with this anyway. I haven't really heard any reasons that would ever change my opinion on him.Kaboom wrote:Tullece says hello.Cableguy15 wrote:- He's the first villain to truly pwn all the main characters at once.

I like his character design when he isn't in Legendary mode. The blue hair Super Saiyan thing looks kinda cool.

I use Broli. Broly is in the English dub, latter his Japanese name Burori.Questrider wrote:It is spelled Broli, right? Not Broly??

Re: Why is Broli such a huge fan favorite?
Both "Broli" and "Broly" are fine transliterations, but I think Broli better conveys the character's name pun on broccoli.Questrider wrote:It is spelled Broli, right? Not Broly??
First: No one speaks like that in English! When you use the word "latter", you're referring to something that was mentioned before the word "latter", not something after it. And either way, in your sentence, you don't even need the word latter. It's pointless.SilverPlaqueVII wrote:...latter his Japanese name Burori.
Second: In Japanese, his name is ブロリー (Burorii).

And Super Android #13.Kaboom wrote:Tullece says hello.Cableguy15 wrote:- He's the first villain to truly pwn all the main characters at once.
But then again, Tullece and Android #13 are not the legendary Super Saiyan. So maybe thats why they don't get much appeal.

It's 'cuz he's so strong.
There are quite a few of that stereotypical dub fans that are in love with him.

Re: Why is Broli such a huge fan favorite?
I don't understand the popularity, either. The concept is annoying at best, to have a villain who is "the true Legendary Super Saiyan". How so? I mean, the entire point of that legend is that it was vague enough for it to be dismissed later on when other characters reached that status. The Broly thing just reeks of trying too hard to clear up something that is better off vague.
And then there's Broly himself. He's a retarded screaming bulldozer who says maybe five lines of dialogue in his entire run. He attacks the same way every time he appears. Nobody tries to do the least bit of creative thinking with him (no, Bio-Broly doesn't count as creative thinking). And fine, that makes him only as bad as every other movie villain, except that he appears three times and the movies with him get progressively worse.
He's a shit character and a huge blotch on the franchise, as far as I'm concerned.
Also, a waste of perfectly good voice talent. I mean, his Japanese VA was Paptimus Scirocco in Zeta Gundam! Even Vic Mignogna was wasted on him, and that's probably the kindest word you'll ever read from me about him.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

I totally see and love what you did there. As for Broli? I never got the popularity either; however, when I was a youngun, that was the one thing my friend cared about DBZ-wise. He was briefly obsessed with Broly, had the movie and action figures and all such.Kaboom wrote: "Tullece was here, Broly is a loser!"
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I used to be a big fan of Broli back when I was a kid, and from what I remember, I think it was because I always thought he was badass because of how was huge and threw around people a lot, I guess that's why fans like him if that helps answer your question.
