Tell Me About Funimation's Dragon Ball GT Dub

Well, I hated that hilariously illfitting soundtrack, but I never had to deal with it because by the time I actually watched GT, it was on the Green Bricks. The original music is much better. Certainly more appropriate.

Stephany Nadolny is not at the top of her game either. Either she forgot how to voice Goku, or his new personality in GT just doesn't match up with her performance. Something about it is sickeningly off. Vale is good as Trunks. But the voice actor for Pan? Ew.

What irked me more than anything was how they just went and made up (wrong) names for all of the dragons. Yes, yes... you're very clever by having the first letter of each name, in star-order, spell out the name "Shenron". Great. Want a cookie? Too bad -- they're not even "shenron" to begin with. They're all ridiculous names, get the type of dragon they are wildly wrong, and pass by an opportunity to just name the darn things what they're already named and so ridiculously easy to adapt into English ("One-Star Dragon", etc.).

Yes, yes, and yes! The naming of the dragons is the one thing about FUNi's GT that annoys me the most. I can get past the music, but the name changes, which are poor ones at that, are inexcusable in my book. Although, if I actually liked GT enough, I'd probably complain about it more.

Anyway, I've also never liked "Tuffle" because it loses its pun. But I can see how difficult it'd be to try and get people to say Tsufuru properly. I mean, it's harder to say Tsufuru than it is to say Saiyan, and we all know how that ended up. :wink:

The Blue Water dub managed to pronounce it fine. Well, as "Tsuful", but still. Tuffles makes me think of Waffles.

This was fixed with the green Season Sets, however, which included the original, brilliant Japanese BGM and even axed the "Step Into The Grand Tour" theme song in favor of English-dubbed versions of the various original themes.

So the Green Bricks don't have the old music on them at all?

The old BGM is there in a secondary audio track; the old opening is not.

Though, the "Step into the Grand Tour" song itself is present in Season 2's "US Broadcast Track" for the TV special.

Well, "tsu" can be romanised as "tu", although it's non-standard and doesn't give a proper indication of what the pronunciation is. So basically, they went from "Tufuru" to "Tuffle".

I assume you're talking about the Kunrei-shiki system. See, that's for romanizations, not transliterations. Even so, nobody really uses that romanization system anymore. Going by the Kunrei-shiki system, ツフル人 (Tsufurujin) would be romanized "Tuhurujin". Weird, right?

Ah... Three and a half years of Japanese, and I haven't bothered learning a thing about what romanisation system is what. (Not that it really matters, I understand my words and stuff and it's all cool. )

Yeah, although I figured that it could easily explain why we have "Tuffles" instead of "Tsuffles". Remember, the term first turned up in early DBZ filler when they really didn't have much idea what they were doing and were supposedly supplied with really dodgy translations, so despite the fact that by GT, no-one would even remember the Tuffles anyway, Funi seemed to take it and run. The early days of the DBZ dub are what gave us the dub pronunciation of "Saiyan" as well as "Kayo-ken", it's no surprise that other frustrating little things arose there.

I would be very impressed if they left in a word starting with "ts". Not so much nowadays (Tsunare and all that), but at the time of GT? Meepers.

The only real problem with "Tuffles" is that it ignores the "tsu" part in "Tsufurujin". It's not a correct transliteration, but they could have done worse.

"Tuffle" isn't so much wrong as much as it is merely a mangled pronunciation, like how they say "Saiyan" as "Say-in" rather than like the pronunciation in the Japanese "Saiya-jin".

How hard is it to imagine up "Tsufrian" though...
